    Once again here we are with another Phoibos. This time it's the Phoibos Eagle Ray GMT. A watch that I've been waiting to see for a few months. While it's a quartz GMT powered by a Ronda 515. It's also one of the best looking Compressor style watch I've seen. Not to mention the best lume of a compressor-style watch I've seen.
    All in all, it's a great option for those looking for a budget GMT. This one is reference PX023D.

    I had an Aragon GMT that had this same movement in it. The free adjusting GMT hand really annoyed me every time I tried to change the timezone. I almost always felt like it was slightly out of alignment with the main hour hand. Other than that, it's a great looking watch!

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know what you mean. I feel like I have to set the time to the nearest hour before setting the gmt. Just to make sure it's all lined up, then go back and reset the time.

    Great review. I am looking hard for a budget travel watch and this ticks many of the boxes. You mention at 9:50 as did one other reviewer that because of the independent GMT hand you can track three timezones. Without having a 24 hrs chapter ring or additional 24hr indices on the dial, how would you accomplish that?

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you.
      I did a short video on the basics of how to use a GMT here.
      th-cam.com/video/7jDZq1I7HoA/w-d-xo.html
      But I think your asking something more specific. On how do you read that other time zone if the indicators are adjusted... short answer a little bit of mental gymnastics.
      Most GMTs don't have a secondary 24 hour indicators, it's usually in the bezel. Think of the Rolex GMT Master II, which many people base their designs on. I think my Glycine airman (which I use in the video) might be the exception to that.
      So for an example lets say it's Christmas morning (Merry Christmas by the way), and I live in Dallas, and my brother is in the East Coast (+1 hrs). Yet I also have some friends on the West Coast (-2 hrs).
      So I leave the main time to my time, just so I can use it as normal. Then I adjust the GMT hand ahead one hour for my brother. Which is then followed by moving the bezel back 3 for my friends. It's back 3 because it's in relation to the GMT hand, not mine. So it should be sitting at the 21 mark.
      So for time 1 (me) just read the hour hand as your normally would, 9:45am. For time 3 (my friends) I would read the GMT hand in relation to the now rotated bezel, 7:45am.
      Time 2 (my brother) is a little tricky because of that rotated bezel. So you instead read in in relation to the regular indicators and multiple by 2. But you have to take the halfway point into account between those indicators. So here it's past the 5, but not quite halfway point between it and the 6. So 5 x 2 = 10, 10:45. Yet once it gets to that halfway point it would then be 5.5 x 2 = 11, 11:00 am.
      It's a little trickier but you can do it with some practice. Yet it's almost as easy to say "Hey Siri, whats the time in...."

    Love the gilt details on black dial, but those baton markers, they seem to be misaligned?

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Might be the camera angle, or maybe the crystal distortion. Honestly I'm not sure. Every once in a while I looked at it and something looks a little off. So I did try taking a closer look. Rotating it at different angles, and breaking out a ruler to check. Everything seems to line up, so I just assumed the crystal was playing tricks.

    But this thinner case got my attention.

  • @NonyaDamnbusiness
    @NonyaDamnbusiness 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I've got a Nighthawk I've been dragging around the planet for years.
    I usually just set the GMT time to local home time or HQs Rear-D time and then when I'm on the plane I just pop out the crown to the second position to move the hour hand around to local time wherever I am.
    Bouncing back and forth between Germany and the Middle East for a few years, that function came in handy.
    Frequent timezone hoppers should always look for an independently-set hour hand in an "analog" GMT watch, it's just going to make your life easier.
    That being said, can't find myself travelling too much with the Phoibos just because once you have the GMT and time set, once you take off in the plane and want to set the watch to your new local you wind up first having to set the hour & minute hands to the new timezone while remembering *exactly* where in-between the hour markers on the dial the GMT hand was and then you have to either reset the GMT hand back to where it was originally or moving the inner bezel so it's back to where it was. Too fiddly.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the only quartz GMT I've seen where you adjust the hour hand (not the GMT) is a Seiko Kinetic. Although I don't remember if the date was linked to the hour hand or the GMT.

    A good review. Thank you. Your choice of bands gives a boost to the watch. Like much of the "Phoibos" but a quartz? Usually live life on the edge of battery replacement. For the value the watch appears quite a buy. Would appreciate an auto. The Seiko NH35a should not add that much to price. My Invicta costed less than $100.00 with that movement.

  • @Rick-ve5lx
    @Rick-ve5lx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I got mine but the hands are not quite aligned, the minute hand says six mins past when hour hand lines up dead centre with hour. A bit disappointed so I’m wondering whether to send it back or am I being too critical?

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it was within a min, I'd probably ignore it. Yet 6 min it's pretty bad. I'd probably look into returning it at that point. Although If you are looking to exchange it for another you might not be able to. I think they are all sold out at this point.
      Supposedly they won't be getting anymore for a while. Someone on the Phoibos Facebook group said it won't be re-stocked this year. Which seems like a long time, but who knows.
      Is it consistently like that as it goes around the dial?

    • @Rick-ve5lx
      @Rick-ve5lx 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s the same for each hour. At midnight you can see the hands don’t quite align. I’ve decided to keep it, it’s not noticeable except on the hour and the rest of the watch is good. Thanks for the “relativetime” discount.

  • @maidpretty

    Damn it, the watch bug bit me with "hey, you don't have a proper GMT and this one looks nice", so I ordered the blueish dial version (with your code). Tried Citizen Nighthawk - it feels a bit bulky and I don't like the dial - there's too much going on. Also, I think for a travel/tool watch being quartz is a good thing.

    Hear good things Phoibos watch . it's a quartz and keeps good time. RIght now may want to get a Great Wall good value and don't have to buy direct and go with Long Island Watch, which has support and is an AD. Have a simple Phibos 300 meter quuartz. Good watch but put it in with watches I palm tp sell, but may keep it because it's inexpensive and sells for $119.00 and well worth the price. Why would I care if you make a commission, even better if I save a few bucks, You work hard making your video and good you get a taste.
    I have a Nighthawk and Blue Angel, a bitch to set up, planning on selling the nighthawk since I just got a G-Shock GBW-2000, easier to set, and has a BT phone connection, it's one of their higher end pieces, cheapest of their better line, and like the dial and no LCD which I have trouble reading and comes on a fantastic band. Got it off and AD for a fair price, actually the same or cheaper than an EBAY cost, which any benefit would be hit on sales tax.
    I do buy my Glycines from Ebay from an AD, price is mostly as good. In the same state NJ which means quick shipping on the free slowest route. I have called them with a problem and they were more then happy to help.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you buy direct it might take longer too coming from Hong Kong. So that's another positive with Long Island. So far I've only bought one thing from there, but Mark seems like a stand up guy.
      Some people care about the affiliate stuff, and others don't. So it just seems like the best way to do it is just to say it exists. Just like if someone sends you a watch, instead of buying it.
      Although I have to say that from watching other channels it does get redundant when the host always goes into a 30 second tangent about that and how it won't effect their opinion.

    I agree the Roman numerals are not necessary.
    Personally, I would rather have a GMT that adjusts like this as opposed to a jump GMT. It it’s not aligned with a jump hand you can’t do anything about it. Wit this you can get it where you want it.

    This was my first Phoibos, and it fits an excellent slot for me. It's a cheap, reliable travel watch that I won't sweat over if it gets banged up or stolen. The Phoibos is well finished for the price point - you won't mistake it for a 5,000 watch, but it certainly never feels cheap. Though I agree with the mirror finish back, I would have preferred the Kraken. I love their logo, and the fact that it is thinner is a big selling point for me. I wear dress shirts and suits a lot, which is why I've tended to avoid divers - they're just too bulky for my liking most of the time.
    I used to have a more expansive mechanical collection with all sorts of complications, but I have since pared it down to my Rolex GMT Master II. If I ever get back into mechanicals again, I'm sticking with time only - several months for a service is just wild. A GMT Quartz is a fantastic idea, though I do wish the movement had a low battery/End of life indicator like my Casio Oceanus.

      @@RelativeTime Yeah, I'm not sure if I've ever seen a microbrand with Solar - not sure if you've ever had a chance to look at the Casio Oceanus line, but I am just absolutely blown away at its finish and all the tech it has. The second hand there autocorrects itself so its always hitting the marks.

      @@hoemuffin really! It's been on my list of watches to check out. Might have to bump it up.

      @@RelativeTime Yeah, I picked up the simple 3 hand version (OCW-T200S) in sky blue, it was such an unusual color. I actually like the way it handles Bluetooth connectivity - just syncs for time, and you can adjust features via your phone. No notifications and all that jazz, plus it is entirely optional. Finishing is excellent; it is a watch that (IMO) punches way above its price point.

    You should add a G-Shock square to your collection mate. Perhaps a GW-5610. Positive display, multiband 6, tough solar, great size, rock solid and cheap. Pretty sure you wouldn't be disappointed

      I think that would be the g-shock I would get. A lot of the others just seem too big.

      Another great capture of what I think is a super watch. I appreciate how you will sometimes seek out the less conventional color ways of a particular release (e.g. this DH, the Seiko rootbeer bottle cap). As soon as I saw that 40mm 1970's were available again, I jumped on a W&W edition. Such are the looks, fit and value of this line, that I would consider buying a second one in a different color.

    This is definitely a looker. I usually hate the logo of this company but with watch it looks amazing. You would think the black and white one would look better than this one but its lacks character.

      I felt the same way. I was tempted to ask for one of the color gradient dials. Like the green or red, but something about this gilt one just felt right.

      Is that because you potential reduced the water resistance when you swap the battery? Or is there another reason?

      @@RelativeTime yes, exactly. In my region it is almost impossible to find a watchmaster who has the necessary exuipment and skill to change the battery and keep the watch watertight after that

      Perfectly understandable. I would really like to see a solar or kinetic version of this as well. But I'm not sure if Seiko or Citizen sells thoughts movements to Microbrands.
