I heard this amazing song by Oh Wonder back in August, got hit by major inspiration that I had to make some sort of thing like this. I've always wanted to learn some After Effects, so it felt like it was time to try out a project! :)
I started right as I got off work that sweet August friday, worked all through the weekend and had a sort of storyboard after a week. Since then I've worked on and off evenings and weekends when I could to produce all the art for it. It was a great learning experience and I'm very proud of completing it! Hope you enjoy it!

I was already crying when matt asked for final words, then afterwards when nott said this it was like my chest caved in. Hits different seeing this in animation though.

This comment made me cry so fucking hard, I might have heard Nott say it. But just the added sadness of this animation finally got to me. I had never felt so attached to him until it was too late, and I realized I wanted him back. I knew it was coming up, I even knew which episode, but it still hit me like a bullet. And it's a frickin roleplaying game, yet the absurd acting makes it feel more like a tv show. Time to watch the rest of the show, and maybe.. eventually finish it. But I highly doubt it.
And one day, many many years from now (for the Mighty Nein at least), as they’re traveling the many planes beyond their own, maybe, just maybe they’ll hear those words again...

@@Titoichi1986 He's more referring to where Molly's Soul ended up. In most DnD Worlds (Matt's included, as they have been to Pandemonium, one of the outer planes in the Grog one-shot), your soul either ends up in the home of your deity, one of the outer planes, or both (in some complicated scenarios). This is a real possibility, depending on what Molly's true faith was.
Based on the fact he wore the pendants of many gods on his necklace, one of two scenarios are likely: either one of his gods claimed him, if he faith was true, or he got sent to the Fugue Plane, to the City of Judgement. If he got sent there, well, he ain't coming back most likely, short of a True Resurrection or Wish.
Either way, the possibility of us ever seeing him again is very slim, by my estimates. But who knows! That's one of the beauties of this game, anything can happen.

Let's be completley honest.
Mollymauk's death was the most important event in the career of the Mighty Nine. It/He taught Nott about stealing, taught Caleb about the past, taught Jester about the future, taught Yasha about friendship, taught Beau about comedy and trust, taught Fjord about leadership, and taught Cadeucus about the rest of the Mighty Nine.
And most importantly, he taught the Iron Shepards a lesson.

I went into Critical role knowing about Molly's death. From day one I told myself that he'd only last a measly 27 episodes and to not get attached. But I think part of Molly is his ability to worm his way into your heart. The same time he was charming his way into the lives of the Nein, he was also finding his way into our own.
It truly was impossible to not love Mollymauk Tealeaf. And i can say with utmost certainty, while he may or may not leave every town better than he found it, he left me and the Might Nein better for having known him.

I was in the exact same situation. I knew about it, I prepared myself for it with walls so that I wouldn't get too attached... episode one, everything falls apart and I immediately fall in love with him.

That's taliesin for you. He makes without a doubt in my mind the best characters out of all of the cast members. I don't want to take anything away from them, but he is so incredibly talented at creating incredible characters, and then weaving them into everyone's hearts during roleplay.

Not to sound cringy or weird but this is one of the quotes i live by. I wish that when i leave people behind or when i someday die, that the people i met and helped remember me. They dont have to remember my name nor my face or my voice all i want is that they remember this young man that was just kind jut this person that just helped because he wanted to, nothing more nothing less. Taliesin really did set the gold standard for a Character, in less that 30 episodes he made a character that shaped the party as well as the entire campaign.
Who also tuned out to be the bbeg.
I will never understand the love with Molly. But ig fandom culture obsesses over any flamboyant character so I shouldn't be surprised.

Because of him Beau started wanting to help others. You're cappin if you don't see how he was the emotional center of the group. He helped the Nein learn that they wanted to help people.

I watched this since I have an interest in CR but find the number of hours it would take to watch it all overwhelming, and am currently crying over the purple guy :')
Something I noticed: the clerics now keep every revival spell that they can prep. Without fail, they make sure to have the materials and magic needed to keep this from happening ever again
Even "I'm not healing anyone" Jester. Hell... maybe especially Jester since she wasn't on hand to save him.
I also noticed most everyone save I think nott and Caleb made sure to learn at least healing hands or healing word. Nott and caleb made sure to carry potions
@@tycol322 Nott and Caleb both get their spells from the wizard spell list, which has neither Cure Wounds or Healing Word, so that's probably why they started carrying those. Smart.
They also didn't have any healing caster on hand to revive Molly. It was the one fight somebody died in that they didn't have the people there to bring him back.

@@dremodicus7392 It means that Molly (being a tiefling) would most likely have his soul claimed by the demon/devil that sired his bloodline, and wouldn't be openly traversing the outer planes. Ultimately though it's up to Matt and Taliesin, and what they decide to do with the character.

After what Cad did to the corpse, it might be rough. Decompose may be something he is immune too, but i doubt it. I'm trying to remember how Matt described it when Caduceus performed the cast
@@RAWatson1989 in the description of the cantrip, it specifically mentions that it's effects do not interfere with the criteria for resurrection spells, so if Mollymauk can be returned to life, he will be fully himself, at least physically.

As sad as it is to say, Molly was probably the best one to die in the group. And what I mean by that isn't that he was the worst character or that he deserved to die the most. God knows that's not the case. What I mean is, well... Losing anyone would have been devastating to all of them. But, I think Molly filled a gap that the nein needed without realizing it. We all know Beau is an asshole, that Nott is a bit of a kleptomaniac and often steals for selfish reasons, hell that fjord is about as empathetic as a rock sometimes. We know Caleb originally joined the group only to further his agenda, that he'd turn tail at a moments notice. But, Molly was none of these things. He was the nucleus of the group without any of them realizing. More than that he was their entire moral compass. And without him... what are they? That's what they had to ask themselves. When Molly died it was sink or swim. Figure out how to stay together without their heart, or fall apart as a group. The amount of character development we've seen as a result of Molly's death has been incredible. It may not have been necessary that he die, but I firmly believe that these characters would not be where they are today if they hadn't lost Molly. I'm excited to see how things will go from here, and how they will continue to evolve as a group without Molly, gone but never forgotten.

I agree. The morality of Molly was an interesting one. He cared about people. The little people. Not the wealthy or the tyranical, but the farmers, every day citizens and the poor. Those struggling to get through the day like he was. I really enjoyed the little things he did (often without the party noticing) to improve the lives of random people.
Even now the Nein is a bit of a mess where morality is concerned and while I'm not completely caught up (41) There's still friction between them, but I feel Molly's death was definitely the cement in unifying the group. Before that they still didn't know what they were and how long it would last. Caleb was still waiting for the day to turn tail and run, hell even during the fight where Molly died, Caleb was thinking about running. Mollys death in a way helps keep them together because if they fall apart, Molly died for nothing.
This is a really great point, and as I'm finally getting to the episodes in the aftermath, I think it really shows. Like, Molly carried a LOT of the empathetic, emotional load of the group. As you pointed out, he was really the only one uniquely suited for the task, and once he was gone, like...you could tell. Later, when everyone else is trying to cheer up Caduceus, I couldn't help feel the irony that Taliesin really needed his old character to help his new one, y'know? But you're right--they'll grow now, I hope. I still miss him though.

I think what makes this hit extra hard completely unintentionally was that the second word Kingsley ever spoke was "Love". Even though Molly wasn't completely back and pretty much all of his memories were gone, he didn't forget it, all of the love. All. Of. The. Love.
The Critical Role cast has seen this, right?! Taliesin has seen this, right? RIGHT!?!?!

I just realized why this video hit me so hard.
I'm not even at this episode yet; I saw it before I even really knew what Critical Role was.
But now I know that Mollymauk only had two years of life to him. Before that, nothing.
So, I was in the Army. You know people, but not for huge amounts of time. You meet people in Basic, you leave most of them behind. Then you meet more people, and you start over.
Everyone has their past. You hear about it. You get chummy. You eat the same food. You tell jokes. You fight with each other. You work together. Sleep together. Hell, you everything together.
Then they leave. Or you do, and just like that, they're part of your past.
Or they die. You're there, or near when it happens. Then suddenly, they're everybody's past. But they're also your present. You never stop thinking about them. You eat a sandwich, and you remember he liked this one place where he took you so he could prove it was good, even though you already believed it was. Or you remember the time both of you nearly bought it when the vehicle got flipped by a mine, but you were both coated in blue gatorade so that when you climbed out of the wreck, all the two of you could do was laugh at your stained-blue faces like tooled-up Smurfs.
This video lets you remember the good times of a character you never knew or cared about until they made you care. A total enigma, then a friend, then family, and now, a memory.

Could Taliesin have picked a better character archetype to follow up Mollymauk with? A character that literally deals with death in a mature, calm and understanding manner. A literal representative for life-after-death. Outstanding move.

Never thought I would see the day the death of a DND character would be mourned by an audience like traditional fiction.
Molly was a really good character. And his death forced the characters to undergo character development. His death helped to shape the M9.
This made me remember the fact that Pumat doesn’t know that Molly died. I’m not prepared for that moment.

What hurts most is the fact that Taliesin said that for Molly he injected a lot of himself into him, and I just adore Taliesin Jaffe as a person, so it was harder for me to see Molly go.
Regardless of how short-lived his time was he was such an impactful character and will always he my favorite of the mighty nein
I miss Molly .....
Critical role is such a strange form of storytelling that I didn’t really realize that till watching this. Caduceus is great. He has a cool collected vibe to him but I miss the unique energy Taliesin brought to the table as Molly.
SPOILER: I can only dream of the kind of things molly would have done during the teams pirate adventures.
(Note: don’t mistake this for any sort of displeasure over critical role. I’m still loving it)

honestly, molly's death really got me, but beau breaking down afterwards got me even more. she's so tough and the fact that molly's death affected her enough for her to show it really killed me.
I still remember her and Molly getting high and being able to see into the Astral Plane for like a hour. So happy I got to meet Taliesen last year.

He's weird, he does the oddest things with good intentions....I want them to run into those bandits again, and they notice Molly is gone. Molly gave them gold and whatnot, tried to get them in the right direction.

Yasha and Molly sleeping was touching. It's easy to forget sometimes that the two of them have the most history together. It was so hard to listen to Matt describe her finding out about Molly, I just wish Ashley Johnson was there to do it herself.
lowlyspy Ashley missing out on so many gut punching moments (Molly’s Grave and Scanlan leaving VM particularly) really sucks. I feel like she misses out on some of the most important parts of their games.

What makes Molly's death all the worse is that he knocked himself out, with his own blood maledict.
He was so angry at Lorenzo for taking his friends, that he never stopped to check if he'd survive, if the next cost was too great or not.
Regardless, wherever he is, I'm sure he's looking down upon the Nein with a smile.

I watch this sometimes to remind myself what true sadness is. Mollymauk was the best of them. Molly always left a place better than he found it, he taught when not to steal, he was the shining beacon to the Mighty Nein. The one with no dark past. No evil or murder in his memory. A truly good man was killed while those who weren't always good live on. To become better than they were because of his example.

I don’t think I’ll ever stop missing Molly. He brought out the brightest and best colors from the Nein. He served as one of their first and strongest connections and he was genuinely an amazing member of the Nein, they loved him just as many of the fans did and we all wanted him back. I still recall many of his quotes that reside firm in my heart. Unfortunately, it’s heartbreaking Mollymauk Tealeaf may not be present anymore but his reign stays mighty. Kingsley Tealeaf says the last feelings he remembers is feeling like a grand majesty and royal, that brings me joy and peace knowing Molly passed with those feelings. I don’t see Kingsley and Molly as the same, and I’d say their reigns are separate, but Kingsley definitely fits as his brother and will only boost Molly’s fame with his ship. So this is a Thank you to the circus man, the icon who brought so much joy and chaos to his own world and ours. Long may he reign.
I think a beautiful thing about Kingsley is that he's the first version who actually took interest in his past (Molly), aside from having his feelings for the Nein while not completely understanding them.
He even show a lot of respect to Molly, visiting his connections with the Nein and learning, and finally named his ship after him. He'll sail to become his own King, but he carries the legacy of the previous king with him.
You know, one interesting thought would be that Molly is just waiting on the other side of the veil, constantly flipping his cards to try and tell the future of his companions (particularly Yasha), and is just sitting wherever they ended up, laughing at all the shenanigans they have gotten into.
I can see molly just cackling at jester and notts escape from the platinum dragon church, screaming "RUN, SAPPHIRE,RUN" Followed by more laughter
I hope they get more shrooms that let you see into the astral plain, and that they will see Molly walking with them.

Oh my God, this comment hits so much differently after this arc.
I know this isn't the case, but:
What if Molly remembered more than he let on. Maybe he knew all about Lucian; or maybe it was only in dreams, visions, or the images he was inspired to draw on his cards. Either way, knew the threat he posed, the threat that was coming. So he went searching for a team that could one day defeat him. He found the Nien, and saw their potential. He helped them grow, but as soon as they met Cree, he knew time was short. They needed something to rally around, something to bring them together. And maybe if he sacrificed himself, he could keep the danger away. At least for a while.

I told myself not to get attatched when I started listening to Critical Role... I knew Molly would die, so much art pointed to it and so many ”Rip” comments everywhere.
But I’m crying so badly when I see him in art now. I stopped listening in the middle of episode 26 when all evidence pointed that this was where he would die. I was silently screaming ”no god please no!” and ”not now please not yet!” at the screen the closer the final blow got, afraid and helpless as his last moments were happening.
I stopped listening to the show for a while after that. My heart was in pieces.
When I learned that Talesin had accepted that Molly was gone for good and that he wouldn’t return I just broke inside. When I hear Caduceus speak all I can hear is Molly’s voice. It hurts so bad and I had told myself not to get attatched!
I love reading stories where Molly survived or where he comes back from the dead once again, but my heart breaks all over again when I know he hasn’t and won’t in the show.
If you’re still reading this I want to say thank you. I know my grammar can be awful, but it means a lot that someone cared enough.

I got on the critter wagon at the beginning of campaign 3, and I've been bingeing VM and M9 to catch up. Yesterday I got to M9 episode 26, and I already knew Molly wasn't going to make it. Didn't cry when he fell. Didn't cry when Beau and Caleb buried him. But this? This tore my heart out and wrung it like a sponge. Even though I already know how the campaign ends, thanks to mountains of spoilers, I've been crying for fifteen minutes about this gorgeous eulogy. You crushed it. Long May He Reign.

I'm not properly in the CR fandom (yet) but I still come to this video whenever I need a good cry. The music and the art combine to make something absolutely destructive--terribly sad but heartwarmingly tender.
Hey! I'm a follower of yours, I've been for a while now and I'm so happy I found you here.
So, in short: after you posted your Church video, I went obsessed, watched it like one hundred times in a row, that became my favorite song, also I got very deep into the tiefling abyss (I don't know if it was your intention to make Ash a "tiefling" but he kinda looks like one). And while I was rummaging through the internet in search of any kind of media about tieflings, I discovered Critical Role, and I'm like 110 hours into it now. Molly will always be my favorite, all the party is like family to me but Molly, Molly is something more to me, something I can't describe with words. And it's helping me a lot, this show, a hella lot. And it's really all thanks to you. I also found the courage to like, summon my best friends at a sketchy diner one night and ask them to start a new D&D campaign. And ça va sans dire, I'm rping a flamboyant tiefling. And after not touching a pencil for almost three years because of depression, I've been drawing and illustrating every day since we started the campaign. So yeah, thank you. For everything.

I've seen people say that Molly lovers overthought him. Here's my opinion.
Molly didnt have a lot of memories pre M9. Mostly just the circus and Yasha. Better almost everything he did made people feel better, and in a fantasy world like Exandria that's almost as important as battling monsters. He didnt do it because he had some teaching or anything, he just did it. Initially I was sad from Molly's death because he was the character I was most interested in seeing progress. But things like this video Make you think; these are damn near all of his memories.
Sorry for the rant. Had to do something to stop the tears. Amazing video.

No offense to Ashley/Keg, but with only Beau, Caleb, and Nott, they were in desperate need of any class that could get them back up... because they were still really low level and going down A LOT. As soon as they introduced Keg and we found out she was a fighter, I had a sinking feeling this was going to happen. You're right man... never leave your wingman!

I began watching Critical Role partly because of Molly's death.
Rather than feeling spoiled, I took the approach of anticipation. It's going to happen, but I want to see how we get there.
Mollymauk just sort of ties the band together.

I love this! I had Mollys death spoiled 3 episodes short of the event, and though I have never allowed spoilers to sour my experiences in the past, this one stung a little because I felt a little robbed of the full emotional impact. It wasn't until seeing fan made videos like this, that I got to fully embrace the feeling of this characters loss.

I don't think I'll ever be over his death... He meant so much to me as a character, making me accept a part of myself, inspiring me. I still hold hope that Matt brings him back in some way, maybe even as an enemy (even though it would break my heart even further), just because he's such an interesting character.
Link While reading the comments, I realized something that I hadn't picked up on during the episode; Caduceus used Decay on Molly's body, so he won't be coming back in the same way he had before. Regardless of how he came back before, his long journey has finally reached its end. And, I think that as sad as that is, it's also a very nice thing for Talesin to do for Molly. Think about it; every time he comes back, he loses his memory. Talesin, through Caduceus, made it so that Molly's last living memories were of the Mighty Nein, and so he wouldn't come back as an enemy.

But yeah, until we actually know what the deal is with the eyes, and the resurrection and all that, I think I'll still keep on hoping.

The decompose cantrip probably means no crawling out of his grave the way he did before, but it explicitly says it does not affect resurrection... so... hope?
@@Miner49er201 Actually Matt already twittered about this. "Decompose" is just a flavor cantrip for Caduceus. It won't stop them from resurrecting Molly. But Taliesin is the one in the end if they do to make the choice really to accept if Molly would want to come back.

The whole group is there. Gathered around him. It's so nice to see us all together, he thinks, even if it's the last time. He's standing there, but they can't see him. He should be cold, he doesn't have his coat, but he can't feel it. He sees them all there, and smiles. Looks like he made the world better after all, and if not, he knows they will. He sees Jester putting the card down, and he tries to pick it up, but his fingers go right through. He sees everyone sad and he comes closer. He comes to Caleb and he tries to wipe his tears away, but even though he's so close to him, it feels like they are miles and miles apart. He tries to ruffle Notts hair and it's like pushing magnets together facing the wrong sides. He tries to pat Fjord on shoulder, but his hand goes straight through him, the image of Fjord swirling like ink in water. He sees Yasha walk away and stands in her way, and even though she walks straight through him, he tries to hug her as she does. Not to try and come back, not in disbelief. He is calm. He is smiling. He's not being desperate. He's saying goodbye. And as they are crying, he steps on his own grave, happy tears running down his lavender face, mixed with his own blood. And he smiles and stretches his arms out, for the one last song.

This is one of the greatest fan animations for Critical Role. I can say I didn't really understand Molly that much in the beginning but he slowly became one of my favorites. This was a walk down memory lane of all the things that made me fall in love with the character. With tears in my eyes I say "Long may he reign".
Same for me. At first I didn't think of Molly and by the time of his passing I really liked him, he opened up as a character and was gone. I like Clay, but Molly was just amazing.

This is gorgeous, (i cried like a babby, so thanks), but beyond Molly it was lovely to see the rest of the Nein interacting. Jester full of joy while standing behind Molly, the giddy insanity in Nott's face as they danced.
