    I’ve been breathing every three strokes in the pool and then when I start getting more tired I change to every two strokes but I breath on my left side on one length and my right side on the next length to keep using both sides. Quite new to swimming and got my first triathlon next Sunday 🤗

    Yep. My biggest struggle too. I was so frustrated on my swim last night. So glad I watched your video today!! I've been taking huge breaths and getting so out of breath, just like you said. I'm going back to the pool tonight to put all this into practice. Thanks!

    Thanks for sharing , this makes so much sense. For years I have just tried to swim lap after lap without giving any consideration to breathing Technique. And you are spot on with regarding open water swims I often find myself only breathing on one side when doing beach swims. Great video 👍

    Thank you for reaffirming my strategy! I’ve been thinking I’m inefficient by breathing “so often” but I’m psyched to hear your reasoning

    Great tips once again,feel pressured to breathe every fourth stroke but after switching the every second it makes the swim so much more enjoyable,thanks taren

    I have found on my learning-to-swim journey as an adult that the tip-givers, including the learning to swim online programs, insist on bilateral breathing, however it's interesting to note that Olympic distance swimmers are breathing every other stroke in events like the 1500 m. Good video on a different take on breathing in triathlon.

    Best reason given for having the ability to bilateral breathing that I have heard. Sold me🎉

    I'm so pleased I watched this video! I am certainly not new to triathlon but still struggle with the swim element. I naturally want to take a breath every 2 but my coaches have always tried to change me to bilaterally with 3! Now I see it is more just being able to breathe on either side! Can't wait to swim tonight now!

    Surprised you didn’t mention it but one of the best reasons for breathing both sides is to help prevent any imbalances. I agree 100% with TTs suggestion to breath every other stroke so one option to consider is to just breath the same side of the pool both ways. Eg breath right side only on way down and left side only on return.

    Why do I get so out of breath when swimming freestyle? I'm breathing out as soon as my head goes in the water, i'm aerobically fit and my technique is good. Is it because my muscles are used to movements?

      For me as well, just learning to swim (started lessons a month ago). As an ultra runner with a couple 100 mile finishes under my belt buckles, I figured it would be relatively easy and was quickly humbled. What is helping so far is not concentrating on taking deep breaths in, but making sure I blow all the air out of my lungs while my face is still in the water. You don't think about breathing much while running because you just do what is natural for your body, which for me anyway was long slow breaths. That won't work in water and it's been a struggle to adjust for me as well.

    • @TriathlonTaren
      @TriathlonTaren  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I enjoy very much your you tube clips, recommendations, I do have a question.If you recommend taking small breath, why should we breathe out forcefullelly through the mouth (exhalling you mean) I thought exhaling should be relative to the air we take in, so I thought the exhalling should be short as well, can you clarify. thank you

    How about longer breaths every 3 or 4 strokes vs short breaths every 2 strokes as you advocate?

    I breathe every 3 strokes Wich works pretty good but I tend to get out of breath as the distance progresses. I Will try this two trike method and see if it gives me more endurance.

    Taren your line of demarcation for a person who is comfortable in the water is 400 meters easily. I’ve followed your advice and program and have gone from barely doing 25 meters to 250 without stopping. I regularly swim around a mile total(with breaks) 3-5 times a week. My question is how often should I test my max distance without stopping. I tend to do it almost daily. Thanks for everything!

    • @TriathlonTaren
      @TriathlonTaren  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that's too often -- you're not going to see daily gains, that's something you'd want to do every few weeks I'd think.

    From my experience, with a heart condition, that I let my body decide when to breath... Most of the time that is every 2 strokes but every so often I breath every 4. Rarely every 3.

    I'm a little confused with this one. 1st you say to breath every other stroke, to prevent "over-oxynateing"(?). Then you say that oxygen is our main source of fuel, and to breath more often? Sounds a bit confusing. But I do like the way you present yourself, and these videos. Thanks for sharing.

  • @Lucky008aau
    @Lucky008aau 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    TT is right. I find it funny though, when I'm doing an easy set, I usually bi-lateral breathe (forcing myself to breathe on my less-efficient side), but when I'm pushing it, such as in sprints or a race, I breathe every two.
    I hope TT doesn't make us learn to mount/dismount on the right side of our bikes soon (like he did in his last race). I'm totally not prepared for running with the bike holding the saddle in my left hand.

  • @pezdacandyboi

    I take master's, can do bilateral, and I much rather breathe unilateral. The coach is on my butt to breathe bilaterally but I feel itsmuch more difficult to get enough air and I'm tired at the end of a length. Should I ignore the coaches recommendation?!

    • @TriathlonTaren
      @TriathlonTaren  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you breathe out of your mouth? That’s what feels “normal” to me but every other TH-cam video says to breathe out through your nose. Does it make any difference? Swim is biggest improvement opportunity for me.
