@@robertbaan2944 I've just shown the movie to my 8-year-old daughter this weekend. The visuals were stunning and the story was exciting enough to be enjoyable for both of us. For your question: he fed the giant eagle with a dozen of pairs of oxen and barrels of wine. At the end of their journey to the surface, the bird became exhausted, so he cut off his own right leg and gave it to her.

My all time favorite Animated Movie, the best in my Opinion. I got myself a Copy around 3 years ago and I don't regret it. Marcell Jankovic's "Fehérlófia" will always be a magical Fairy Tale for all Generations to come. Love it! ❤️
I watched the Bluray last night. A few thoughts... 30 seconds in, I immediately thought, "Did this inspire Genndy Tartakovsky?" (yes I think). Everything that makes Genndy's best work wonderful is here, only magnified many times over. Abstract, symbolic, thought provoking... Claims that it's impossible to describe "Son of the White Mare" are accurate. Attaching the term, "Masterpiece" to it is no exaggeration. I could try to describe what makes this movie spectacular, but would only waste your time. The trailer gives a hint of what the movie is like. Get the Bluray.

I made the same connection between these two geniuses after watching Tatakovsky's Primal and remembering the Oscar-winning short called Sisyphus from Jankovics. If you haven't yet, check them out! I see the similarities in how every frame is a well-thought-out yet instinctive artistic choice serving the purpose of the moment in the film.
Not really. He turned into a right wing loon after the fall of Communism, and churned out questionable stuff. For example, his Tragedy of Man contains antisemitic imagery.
This is such a masterpiece, a jewel of animation. I recommend it for the aesthetic value, the mith and the masterful way it’s storytelling is exposed to the viewer. Also, great Soviet era style…

Some things are beautiful because of how weird and/or surreal they are. This movie is a prime example of that. Honestly, I'm kinda glad this movie only got subbed and never dubbed in English. Although English is my native language, I'll admit that many English-language dubs of originally non-English-language media are mediocre at best.
