    Is it sad that I miss big, bulky TVs like that? Childhood memories right there. I thought I'd won big as a kid when my parents got a new TV and joy of joys, the old Panasonic with the faux-wood trim found its way into my room along with an ancient VCR! Now if only I understood a bit about electronics I could do stuff like this...

  • @Furiends
    @Furiends 5 ปีที่แล้ว +49

    The jitter might be because of failed caps on the power supply. Also speakers back in the early 2000s were almost all paper drum so if they weren't already damaged taking a hose to them did. Further the tactile push buttons are super susceptible to corrosion. So that might be why you were having trouble with the front panel.

    Water is fine for cleaning circuits but this video procedures are not the best way.
    To clean a TV you must first extract the electronic boards, and the speakers. Then you can go with water and soap and clean the CRT and the plastic with calm, it's hermetic.
    Then you can go with the electronic but disconnecting every wire. This is because you will ruined the connection, water can keep days and days inside of connectors, that makes sulfate, and corrosion when electricity is on it.
    Before you must put the boards on an air flux, even dry with isopropyl alcohol.
    Nice video anyway!!!

      Rinoa Super-Genius the TV keep almost water outside, because ventilation grids are not enough for massive water to go inside when the rain drop over. The water do a kind of film over the grids that avoid the water to go inside. If water could be really inside, probably you was found it really ruined, and not just a little oxide.

    • @ItsJustEmK
      @ItsJustEmK 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      If a CRT was very recently on and the caps and/or anode have any charge stored up, water can definitely kill it. But of course, most TVs you'd find out on a curb have been left off for a long time, maybe even spending months in storage before getting thrown out, so even if water gets on the board, there's no power running through it to short and hurt components.
      So by all means, rescue a rained-on curbside CRT! You just have to let it it dry before plugging it in.

    I just found one of these that someone had thrown out and was messing with it yesterday. I couldn't believe there was no way to select inputs without the remote! I set my universal remote easily enough to it but then accidently pressed the reset button twice because it had been assigned to the down arrow button automatically. It forces a channel scan that needs to try a few times in a row before giving you control of the TV back even if you unplug it. Nice CRT though, especially once I get the picture set just right.

I’m not in a position to test the 100% so I don’t want to claim they do if they don’t but the House of the dead 2 was perfect on it, ran that thing for hours. It’s so heavy to move though I’ve thought of getting rid of it many times. It’s really the best with Wii stuff and 4:3 setups though widescreen looked beautiful on it. Sadly it’s got a bit of Dish TV burn in, damn them satellite and cable companies. They really did some damage and were just a PIA to deal with in general back in the day.

    Hi. I finally got my first 486 computer back, but it broke during shipping. I think the CRT is broken. I have a video about it in my channel. I know I can die btw but I try to repair it anyway. So the crt get's voltage, I can hear the sparkling, and when I turn of the monitor the screen has a flash of light. There is a fain glow on the back of the tube. My brother measured the video signal and that seams to be fine. The screen is completely dark though. There must be some mechanical problem, since it broke during shipping. It came in several pieces. What is most likely the cause? If you are able to help me I would be very grateful.

    That cleaned up nicely actually! It’s probably been already mentioned (I’m too lazy to read through the comments) but the jitter along the vertical image, along with image size distortion as is usually indicative of issues with the HT transformer. Usually breakdown of the capacitor and/or transformer isolation is the culprit. Sometimes it can also be related to the switching input to the transformer not maintaining a stable frequency. Or it might just go away because it was still a bit damp ;)
    Either way nice to see that it still worked! Love CRTs myself.

I began to collect them thinking I might make my own wall like in the 80's, maybe use them for security. I have about 8 or 9 in my attic now. Magnavox, RCA and other's. Of course now we can split screen. In 1999 I spent $900 on a Beast. A Hitachi Flat screen "32" with megabass sound system built in. To big to lift. I loved that thing but then we moved to the Flat panel and people started leaving those beasts at the curb in the 2010. Mine rests under the basement stairs awaiting my basement remodel.

      Depends on the device. I've compared component/RGB (HD Retrovision and an xRGB) to just raw RGB with several devices in the past. RGB definitely looked very crisp while certain colors were washed out on component (also 80 column text was still unreadable and dot crawl was still messy). I found NES/SNES/Genesis take most advantage of raw RGB, but things like PS2 and up didn't need RGB at all, that era of console is when you wanna start going for heavy scan lines, Wii looks magnificent with scan lines. But in the end, if I hadn't seen raw RGB and only lived with component converted RGB, I'd probably be ok with that, but something irks me about component RGB because white text is still way too bright and blurry. On raw RGB, it's like computer text, just crisp and easy on the eyes.

      What how? It uses a crt in the crt tv. Crt tvs are, as far as i understand, and according to everything ive read, analog devices. If you can add some new perspective or knowledge by all means im all ears. @@RinoaL

    • @RinoaL
      @RinoaL  22 วันที่ผ่านมา

      CRTs have been controlled by digital electronics internally ever since 1973 or so, they have dedicated digital computers for them that use sometimes 4-bit memory or 8-bit memory. later on they used more complicated digital circuits but all of the signal was controlled digitally since the 1970s. that's how TVs got smaller. The only analog aspect that remained was the signal itself, NTSC being analog. TVs are a genuinely amazing bit of technology where they became a strange mix of solid-state analog and digital technology. Chips in the 1980s that controlled TVs started packing circuits inside them that would simultaneously handle analog data along with digital circuits.
      Then again, in the end, analog and digital are about the same thing when you look closely. As the saying goes "The only difference between digital engineers and analog engineers is one knows they just created an RF source." lol.
