    Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
    AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

It’s such a challenge for me not to get discouraged listening to successful screen writers. I wish they talked more openly about the often circuitous path they take to get to that first sale.

Here's one video where a screenwriter tells us exactly how he sold his first screenplay - th-cam.com/video/jzuP4X0t2TA/w-d-xo.html and here is a follow up to that interview where he clarifies his story a little more - th-cam.com/video/YhSA_CRus5I/w-d-xo.html

If you can't pitch the story well enough to get someone interested in reading the screenplay it probably isn't ready to read outside a writer's circle yet. Cheers Film Courage!

A Producers perspective: If you have a script you want someone to read, do a little research first. Make sure the person you're asking to read your script makes similar content. David hits the nail on the head when he says "it's flattering to be asked for advise, it's not flattering to be asked to do something for someone". Ideas are a dime a dozen, we all have great ideas. How you conduct yourself and your passion for the writing craft is more important to me than the actual screenplay.

I have friends who are interested in reading but won't ask to read my work because they think they can't. I like pitching an idea to friends (like a log-line) to see if they think it's a good idea or something they would watch before writing because if they don't think it is something they wouldn't watch then I already know my idea is not on a good track. But I do get hesitant to ask people who have been in the industry to ask for favors, but I definitely look for advice from them. Thanks again Film Courage!

Screenwriters don't need ideas for screenplays. They have thousands of ideas of their own. Screenwriters need contacts and finance. Before this, first and foremost, the screenwriter needs talent, passion, and persistence. If a script hasn't been written on spec, and one is pitching the idea, the pitch has to be perfect. The pitch must entice, excite, and make someone *want* to spend precious time out of their day to read it.

I agree with him if someone asks me to read their work i feel like i ve been given an assignment. Then i feel guilty cause it feels selfish cause i want people to read my work.

What if you kidnap them and force them to read your screenplay under duress? It sounds like a high risk strategy I know.

OK I get that it's an imposition to be asked to give your time for free.
Thing is, if you have literally no contacts and you keep reading it's all about networking....if you're sitting listening to a professional screenwriter giving a speech right next to you and then you let him walk out the door....isn't this going against all the advice? It's like :"Go back to knowing no one at all".

This is my take on this subject. If an accountant would approach me with this question. I'm pretty sure this person don't have a great Screenplay. The person might have a great idea, or concept or premise that eventually would make a great Screenplay in the hands of a Screenwriter. But that's a lot of work asking for from a stranger. I'm also not sure sending a Great Screenplay around to stranger on forums is a great idea. It's really easy to steal ideas. Because you can't protect ideas. The industry can be really backstabbing. And credits and ownership is the only currency that's worth anything. Protect yourself and your work at all times. I think, as David said, keep it within the group of people you know, or friends connections until it's ready.

Okay here's the thing people, probably about 85% of people working in entertainment in Hollywood do not understand the politics of how Hollywood is run by the club, to mention the club to anyone is like saying Illuminati to their ignorance. I was (2 b continued )

IRON ASPECT: Luck is a big thing in this life andin getting scripts away. So many promises so many disappointments. Not easy even if you have good work. If you can make a hundred contacts where I lucked into 3 to 7 you will be able to do better for yourself than myself. Ken Loach or his staff recommended work on a BBC high up tried to push mt work describing himself as a fan as a director did onto Channel Four. Still here working with hope doing better work, I think. But that's it, get so many contacts get great feedback read great work, novels and scripts and everything and keep going.

Well, that’s not my interpretation. The guy tells us how he totally sympathises with the feeling that drives the persons that approach him, because he’s been there himself. And he suggest a better way to handle such circumstances, based on how the world (humans) work. I felt it made perfect sense.
I sense a feeling of hurt in your comment, am I right? Did this guy snub you on an occasion? Someone else?

@@Johan-vk5yd never met David Wappel, he seems like he's being an honest guy and everything but it's the same old routine of "you must act professionally" and "do things the RIGHT way" but then if you ever read about "successful people" , 9 times out of 10, the "successful people" "Broke all the rules" and "Did things their OWN way". So, this paradox always confuses me.
