Excellent video! And great narration! My son told me about this vid. I'm retired military and was bored, so I applied for track repair (trainee). It was supposed to lead to a conductor job but during the second week I got bronchial pneumonia. Didn't know it but could hardly breathe and zero energy. That day one of the trains was returning to the yard where the crew and me were. We hear a tremendous bang and ran down towards the sound and saw the train had picked a switch and tore up yards of rail. One of the boxcars loaded with soup cans (I think) was tipped almost over. We started into repairing the rails ASAP but I could hardly walk or pick up heavy objects. Went back to the motel and checked in to the local hospital. Told the foreman I'd be going back to my home. Took almost two weeks to recover. I also found out the "conductor" job would be in Solvay operating a remote switcher for the industrial customers there. I thanked the foreman but resigned. Later on I went to the MA&N and worked on track repair for one year before being laid off due to the recession in 2008. A lot of hard work but I got in great shape, learned a lot, rode in the cab a number of times and operated some equipment. Cheers, Bob (liked and subbed)
