  • Ku'u Home O Kahalu'u as done by Ke Kani Nahe
    Ke Kani Nahe is:
    Derek Higa - 12 string rhythm guitar/vocals
    Duke Domingo - Kihoalu/vocals
    Ikaika Machida - Lead guitar
    Samson Sang - Bass guitar/vocals
    www.kekaninahe.com
Composed by Robert Beaumont & Jerry Santos collectively known as Olomana.

    Ku'u Home O' Kahalu'u
I remember days when we were younger
We used to catch o'opu in the mountain stream
'Round the Ko'olau hills we'd ride on horseback
So long ago it seems it was a dream
Last night I dreamt I was returning and my heart called out to you
    But I fear you won't be like I left you....Me ke aloha Ku'u Home o 'Kahalu'u
I remember days when we were wiser
When our world was small enough for dreams
And you have lingered there my sister and I no longer can it seems
Last night I dreamt I was returning and my heart called out to you
    But I fear I am not as I left you.........Me ke aloha Ku'u Home O' Kahalu'u
Change is a strange it can not be denied
It can help you find yourself or make you lose your pride
Moved with it slowly as on the road you go
Please do not hold on to me, we all must go alone............
I remember days when we were smiling
When we laughed and sang the whole night long
And I will greet you as I find you
With the sharing of a brand new song
Last night I dreamt I was returning and my heart called out to you
To please accept me as you find me..........
    Me ke aloha Ku'u Home O' Kahalu'u
    Me ke aloha Ku'u Home O' Kahalu'u
    Me ke aloha Ku'u Home O' Kahalu'u

One of my favorite songs of all time, truly brings so many emotions and memories rushing back... and this rendition is quite possibly the (second) best version of this song I've ever encountered in my entire life. I know I'm a decade late here, but just WOW.

What a great and heart felt interpretation of this song. You have done a fine job of blending all those strings together without drowning out Duke's pa'ani. Likewise the vocals blend so well. Even the kids playing in the back are a great backdrop for a song about memories of home.

I had the true pleasure to live and love true ALOHA! This song touches my heart and I will live forever in the true Spirit. God bless the many musicians in the islands. Beautiful, my Braddahs.
One of the greatest local tunes of all time. I think almost every local Braddah and Teetah’ would immediately reminisce of their own lifetimes growing up in this great land of ours, when listening to this song.
You four did it justice. You played it your style. Not trying to be the Olomana original.
Yet…keeping the soul of the composition in tact.
Huge Mahalo for sharing. I realize it’s been at least 13 years since it was recorded. But, still nahenahe, brothers

Duke, as a former guitar player (nerve damage took that away from me) I truly appreciate your art of music. Anytime I feel depressed, sad, even angry, I seek your music out as a means to bring me back to a calm, happy, and even state. It clenches the heart and doesn't let go and carries me through tougher times - and I've had several in my 65 years, but your music makes life worth living. I salute and bow to your sir. May you continue to influence all people the way you do me. God really does provide us with a means to deal with life, and you're truly one of His tools.

Hahahaha I'm so glad you enjoyed it. It's all in the tuning I use that seperates the rendition from others who do it. Olomana played it in Open D tined up to Open E. So it's E-A-E-G#-A-E. You can't get the same harmonics is standard tuning. The chimes are part of the hook for the song. i had been playing the song for 2 decades. the other 3 guys just did it on the fly. No practice, no warm up & no pre-arranged arrangement. The other 3 guys are good....Me? I knew my parts for 30 years LOL. Thanks

One of the big things now days is reaction to songs on the internet.
If I can manage to convince one of the bigger channels to play this song then maybe expose the younger generation to this heart breaking soulful sound of kalapana,olomana,C&K....
The fist I would recommend the original but this is definitely the next I would recommend.
It’s funny seeing all the comments without the original poster because TH-cam keeps deleting our accounts but won’t tell us why.
Even my old post is gone.

Beautifully done....I think Jerry would approve. Thank you for keeping it close to the original. I performed this song in front of a bunch of inmates while in L.A. Calf. and it moved many to tears. Such powerful lyrics cuts through even the most harden hearts. Thank you so much for the video and for keeping Hawaii in your hearts.

    • @sirduke58
      @sirduke58  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

+John Kasinger Apologies for the tardy reply. Mahalo for the kind words on this video. Yes we always tried to keep the integrity of Olomana's classic song as close as possible to the original. I'm even in the same Open D tuning capoed up to the Emaj that the song is played in. I actually know how to play all the original fills & embellishment too but am unable to play them while singing at the same time. Yes the lyrics are very powerful whether you're from Kahalu'u or anywhere else on Earth. Everyone can relate to the song. So cool that you got to perform it for hardened inmates & witnessed how even they were touched

I'm so glad our rendition invoked those feelings for you. Like you, this song became near & dear to me the minute it was released. I learned all the C&K, Kalapana & Beamers stuff from the same 70's period too. I learned the tuning Jerry Santos & Robert Beaumont used for this song & pretty much play it note for note. I tried to sing the phrases as close as possible to what they did. Thank you for noticing my efforts to keep the integrity of this classic. Mahalo nui loa for your validation.

Thank you so much for revisiting & taking the time to leave such awesome comments. The guitar playing isn't really difficult. The tuning is the key. It's Open D (D-A-D-F#-A-D) capoed at the 2nd fret up to E. Watch the video & noodle with it & you're bound to get it.

+john mcdonald Mahalo nui loa for the awesome compliment, John. We tried to keep as much of the integrity of the song as we could. We all grew up on this song & it means a lot to all of us. This video was only the 2nd time we played it together. A few minutes prior to video taping it we tried it as a 4 piece band. We all played it before with other people but never as a foursome. It's a testament to how we all internalized this song separately. It became our signature song & our finale when we performed. Thank you for your very kind words.
      Warmest Aloha

So calming, so relaxing. Reminds me of our yearly visits to the islands (every 2 yrs we go, for vacation/religious family reunions)

    • @sirduke58
      @sirduke58  7 ปีที่แล้ว

Awesome! Next time you visit, give me some advance notice & maybe I can hustle up a kanikapila BBQ potluck. The local musicians are always looking for an excuse to get together for a jam session so I try to organize them on a regular basis. Often times I can persuade the pros to come out & join us.
BTW. Mahalo for your kind words on the music.

Duke Domingo alright, noted. potlucks are always exciting and delicious (that is, if our definitions are the same). which islands do y'all perform on?

    • @sirduke58
      @sirduke58  7 ปีที่แล้ว

We're on Oahu in the middle of Honolulu. Yup the food is pretty good at the potlucks. I usually cook 2 large pans of food & with the potluck dishes all the musicians bring we have more than we can eat. I think I cook better than I play guitar Hahahaha.

Duke Domingo well pawsome, cuz most of my family lives on Oahu. ya may have heard of our religion: Tensho-Kotai-Jingu-Kyo, it's a minority Japanese religion, large grayish building with an upside-down arch-looking roof?
