    • @lordnul1708
      @lordnul1708 5 ปีที่แล้ว +85

Actually the (according to the devs) canon anime implies his apparent poverty is actually a facade. Seriously if he can afford to get a strawberry sundae every episode, all the stuff Patty cleans up and always having to repair or replace his coat, the guy ain't broke. It's mostly property damage as a consequence of his battles that burn holes in his wallet and with how quickly it gets fixed he's likely to secretly be pretty loaded.
That said, a lack of wisdom would just as likely play directly into causing said property damage, his overall cocky attitude and his choice of "armor".

    • @netherremains

LordNul1 And Dante had to sell off most of the Devil Arms he got through the series because he needed more money. I doubt he's loaded, but he has enough money to get by . . . usually.
Also he keeps losing power to the place, so he's either forgetting to pay bills or he has no money to pay them. But yes, property damage is probably eating away his funds as well

This build is fine, but I feel like it could be better. Sure, it fits the Devil Trigger requirements, but I can't help but feel like all the magical elements feel very un-Dante and I'm not a huge fan of having the guy whose known for being impaled constantly being so squishy in combat. So here's how I'd make a Dante:
Race: Fallen Aasimar, it just fits Dante too well and acts as a nice Devil Trigger
1st Level: Take Barbarian, this will act to emulate Dante's hardiness, like tanking multiple scythes at the start of DMC 3. On top of that, the Rage mechanic can be re-flavored as activating your 'Style gauge' with hits taken considered part of your Royal Guard stance. This also has the nice additional effect of incentivising people to use a basic crossbow along with a longsword or greatsword to hit those far-away targets and keep that precious "Style Ranking" from running out, just like in the games. You also gain advantage on Strength saves while "Styling" and Unarmored Defense, so you can keep fighting while showing off those sweet abs.
2nd Level: By taking Level 2 in Barbarian, you'll gain Reckless Attack and Danger Sense. Reckless Attack is just great for any Barbarian, especially if you want to actually hit things with your 'guns', while Danger Sense gives you a bit more nimbleness to further help you style all over your enemies.
3rd Level: Take Path of the Storm Herald! This will let you pick either fire or ice based on what you want to focus more on. The Desert option will allow you to resist fire damage and, ultimately, counter when you take a hit, like the Royal Guard counter. Meanwhile, the Tundra option can help Dante regenerate while also eventually giving you the option to reduce a target's speed to 0... which can be re-flavored into your Swordmaster juggle combo.
4th Level: Speaking of Swordmaster, time to start unlocking some stylish combos! Take a level in Fighter and go for whichever Fighting Style suits you, like Archer to make the guns more useful, dueler or Great Weapon Fighting for Rebellion, Dual Wielding to copy Agni and Rudra, etc. You also gain Second Wind, because where would a half-demon be without a bit of regeneration, right?
5th Level: It took a bit, but we finally have Action Surge, which will basically let you cancel your combos into other moves. Combined with Reckless Attack, this could lead to some pretty fun setups between your guns and melee setups.
6th Level: Take Battlemaster as your Fighter Archetype, which will finally let you get this party started! Goading attack acts as a nice taunt that also helps your Barbarian utility, Parry acts as a nice justification to say you've got Trickster mastered (slipping away from most of the damage you would have taken, maybe even ALL with 'Style' going), and Riposte is just really solid utility to your 'Style' setup, allowing you to counter after your opponent misses. After all, DMC's an action series and you need to take every chance you can get to exploit those recovery frames, right?
7th and 8th Levels: Time to cash in on those untapped Ability Score boosts from Fighter and Barbarian. Nothing to say here, free stats are always good.
9th Level: Another level in Barbarian gives you that nice Trickster speed bonus along with Extra Attack. Always a good addition to your combo-monster.
10th Level: Take Level 6 in Barbarian for another Path of the Storm Herald skill. Enough said, really.
11th Level: Feral Instincts means you'll never be surprised, because Dante's always ready to crack some demon-skulls at a moment's notice.
12th Level: Another ability score, fair enough
13th Level: For your 9th Barbarian Level, you gain Brutal Critical. It's not too much of a Dante move, but it's fair enough to have for those cutscene kills.
14th Level: Another Path Feature, we're closing in on your more adept Dante Storm Herald skills, though!
15th Level: Dante gets stabbed A LOT. But no matter how many times he gets stabbed, he always keeps fighting! By getting Relentless Rage (Barbarian Level 11), you'll feel just as unkillable as the real Dante!
16th Level: Another ability score boost, never hurts to get these.
17th Level: Brutal Critical II, enough said
18th Level: You can FINALLY do either juggle combos or Royal Guard counters, your pick. Whichever feels more like your personal Dante playstyle, really.
19th Level: At this point, you've earned more than enough Style points to keep a combo going. Use Persistent Rage to make sure you've always got your 'style on'.
20th Level: Finally, one last ability score boost. Always helps to make your Dante physically stronger or more durable, otherwise he just won't feel like Dante.

When you mentioned the fact that Dante gets impaled and gets back again like nothing happened alongside his squishiness, it came to my mind another build idea:
      Monk 12/Fighter 8
Fighter is perfect for Dante due to his mastery of every single weapon in existance. Battle Master is fantastic because of the ability to read his enemies (and taunt them) and reflect his wide variety of skills like lunging attack (for impaling with Rebellion) or parry.
Monk is a must go for Dante, the acrobatic buffoon. What is there to say for the core abilities of monks? Unarmed Strikes (leaving you free to choose a different Fighting Style than the one for d6/d8 unarmed strikes), Evasion, extra speed, stunning strike to jug your enemies around while murdering them in a stylish way, Frighten and Charm cancelation, the ability to run on water and walls, immunity to poison.
Now, what subclass to choose with monks? Well, obviously Way of the Long Death, why? Because of 2 reasons, sustain thanks to the ability to gain THP by killing creatures and becoming virtually immortal at 11th level thanks to the ability to spend 1 ki point when being reduced to 0 HP to drop at 1 HP instead. Get impaled as many times as you want, you won't be falling down anytime soon.
The tricky part are the stats, with fallen aasimar we can't do much...
      I would say:
Fallen Aasimar (+1 Str, +2 Cha)
      15 Str
      14 Dex
      10 Con
      8 Int
      14 Wis
      10 Cha
Remember Kids, you can't use armor if you want to do cool monk stuff.

      @aquamarinerose5405 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Honestly, compared to Tulok's build... Granted, maybe what I would've done wouldn't really be Dante anymore.
I would've put the Dexterity investment into Constitution instead to help keep you alive for longer, take some heavier armor to keep the AC better when kinda dumping but not really dumping dex, and replace Crossbow Expert with either Tough or Magic Initiate.
Tough for the "I get stabbed but don't give a fuck" aspect.
Magic Initiate because you can do what tulok did in his Bayonetta build and use your Eldritch Blast as your guns.

Dante wouldn't never be a barbarian, instead of Just taking classes for specific Powers and habilities, let's remimd that a class is also one identity of a character and Dante would never be a barbarian, i think remaining loyal tô what the characters is would be the best

    • @dracocrusher
      @dracocrusher ปีที่แล้ว +3

@@williamverissimo9818 I hard disagree. If we're just using whatever class defines Dante the best on its own then you'd just go pure Fighter and lose out on a bunch of opportunities to reflavor things to fit the character better.
Remember, just because someone's a Wizard it doesn't mean they have to literally have a long beard and wear a robe, it just means you've got a thing that you inscribe Spells onto to use magic. Once you realize that, there's loads of possibilities that open up for character ideas.
A Barbarian doesn't have to be someone barely clothed wearing bones who screams at people. You could have your Rage be a taunt or a moment of focus, maybe a character has some battle-hungry alternate personality that takes over or they could take some drug that puts them into a crazed battle-frenzy, you know?
In one campaign I played a boxing Barbarian/Fighter/Monk elephant that would glare at a target with a glint of focus in his eye before raising his hands as a sign that he's activating his Rage, and it was pretty fun. In the most recent campaign, I had a Ranger Dhampir Swarmkeeper whose swarm was a bunch of bats he summoned as the vampire powers he manifested after being turned.
There's no need to limit yourself. Do what you want, but at the end of the day it's your character. As long as it's not changing the mechanics, most DMs won't mind and some might even encourage out of the box thinking like this.

@@getthegoons Rage isn't much different mechanically speaking from Devil Trigger. As Devil Trigger in the DMC series gives you immunity to knock back , increased damage, attack speed. About the only thing Rage doesn't cover is the health regen of Devil Trigger and for that we can just multi class Barbarian into the classes that do come with it. So technically we can just combine a couple of classes ability to emulate Devil Trigger and get a proper Dante.
Since this Squishy Dante is just stupid. A pure paladin build is just wrong. Dante is a jack of all trades and a master of weapons. His strength is his variety of skills , abilities, weapons, and the ability to tell Death to go fuck its mother.

    My take.
Race: Tiefling. Dante has a demonic or devil heritage. Not an angelic one. And as far as Im aware Fallen Aasimars have to be evil which Dante is Neutral at worse. You could still say his father was a powerful devil while his mom was a human and tiefling twins were the result of that union.
Alignment: Chaotic Good. In the anime Dante shows he cares little about rules and has no qualms about breaking the law. However he clearly has a conscience and actually refuses to kill anything other than demons. He gives an impression he doesn't care but has shown time and time again he actually does and has even declined the rewards from jobs before despite the fact he is in debt.
Background: Haunted one. Dante is troubled by the murder of his mother. It's what drives him to do what he does. He hides it behind his devil may care attitude but on the inside it burns him alive and even has nightmares about that day.
Class: Dante is a hard one to pin down. He has many capabilities. So a multicast is in order.
Fighter (Eldritch Knight) This is where the bulk of your levels will go. Dante is a self taught fighter. He knows how to use every weapon. Has shown some magic prowess (just you typical evocation lightning bolts, firebolts, some force magic, so the limited selection of Eldritch Knight fits.) And he can summon his sword. (In the anime he could call Rebellion to his side, and in DMC5 he can summon Devil Sword Dante out of thin air.)
Monk: Besides his sword and guns, Dante's next preferred method is unarmed. Not to mention he has a mastery over monk weapons as well (Nunchucks, Bo staff, etc.) Unarmored defense also works here as he never wears armor.
Rogue: 1 level Just for some skill proficencies. Dante is a paranormal investigator and has shown to posses some detective skills in the anime and books.
Barbarian: 1 level for rage. Raging will act as his sort of Devil Trigger. Canonically he rarely uses Devil Trigger so 1 level should suffice and only use it when you are taxed or are truly angry.

I played this build in a campaign last year, made the rest of the character original though - it was good fun but I decided to have a go at building Vergil today and damn I may have found my next backup character because it is such a fun build and surprisingly well optimised.
Bladesinger Wizard 17 / Echo Knight Fighter 3. Get the Bladesinger live by reaching level 2, then switch to the fighter class for three levels, grabbing the Dueling style and Echo Knight for the Doppelganger. Then pump the rest of your levels into gaining spells themed on the Vergil's Summoned Swords and teleporting/opening portals (also took a few spells to summon demons as a nod to V and the occasional wind based spell because Vergil is in fact the storm that is approaching.) As for race, it wasn't optimal with Protector Aasimar but it gives him the flying speed and the Sin Devil Trigger at level 3 - reasoning over picking Fallen like Dante here was in DMC V, Dante has his standard Devil Trigger and later gets SDT - you can't use Vergil's original DT as it's replaced by the Doppelganger (Echo) but he does have an SDT that lets him fly off the bat so this was the switch up.
Just homebrew a longsword or rapier to be a katana and you've got your Yamato (make sure it has Finess.) I probably would've gone more for a mash-up between Paladin and Sorc; Since there's a lot of meta magic and features that could probably make up the most important aspect of Dante; sheer style. Transformations are nice, but I consider that less important than his ability to always have. Though I could totally see if you wanted to emulate his DMC 5 state of basically transforming into destruction incarnate that this particular line of thinking makes more sense.
I've always imagined the pistols as much an extension of his natural ability as physical firearms; I mean they never run out of ammo, so being able to hit a double attack then quickening a sourcing ray/magic missile feels pretty thematic to how tricksy he is. Want a rocket launcher? Fireball. Flaming Numchucks? E.t.c. Basically, I kinda imagine Dante being a nuke of a character being able to burn through magic slots with alarming ease to tear through hordes of demons. Going with a dragon or celestial linage sells the effect that a lot of Dante's abilities are just natural to him and that he can flip between his abilities with as much ease as some people do in breathing.
Though I guess there wouldn't need to be a great dex at that point and I might as well switch it for con; considering that most of his cutscenes see him casually taking injuries that would seriously incapacitate anyone else.
A great video non the less however! I enjoyed this.

With PAM + SENTINEL and 18 Cav's ability to get an AOO reaction per enemy turn you would live up to the "Do not Pursue". The Barb is there mostly for reckless and rage does fit in well with Lu Bu as a concept.

The best Dante build that I can think of would have to be a Blood Hunter by Matthew Mercer with levels in Monk. It's just not AL legal.
Bloodhunter is the rest of your build with the Hunter's Bane helping in Devil hunting and Crimson Rite being your demonic power flowing into the weapon. Second level blood maledicts give you either spell sunder or fending rite for a fiends spell resistance. Third level go order of the lycan for a real devil trigger get regeneration down the line.
Monk provides unarmored defense which is more thematic for the armor less Dante, ki points are all of Dante's styles with trickster being step of the wind, royal guard being patient defense and flurry of blows being a devil arm like Balrog or Beowulf. Go Kensei for sword master style and gunslinger with longsword and hand crossbow as your Kensei weapons.
Stay as an aasimar for the the sin devil trigger, however protector aasimar is as appealing as fallen for flavor.

I went a more powergaming/munckin mix on my end:
I actually went Variant Human (Because I couldn't find a proper race for Dante)
Took the Variant Human Feat Option:
Alert - Really not going to let them Demons get the jump on me, plus higher chances of getting in their faces and unleashing the hurt before they can either zip away or start doing crazy stuff.
17th Level Fighter (Champion) - Because lots of Damage and Action Surge - Going for the SSS Combo Rating
3rd Level Barbarian (Totem) - Mostly for Resistance to Majority of Damage - Little bit of Extra Rage Damage helps out too
Focus on Dexterity and Constitution, while averaging out Strength and Charisma, and slightly mix dumping on Intelligence and Wisdom - none of them below 10 thankfully by the rolls.
    Took the following Feats:
Mobile 4th Level - Hit and Move, Hit and Move, gotta get them combos goings
Tough 6th Level - Tough to bring down, tough to stay down, watching out for those sword impalements
Athlete 8th Level - Running around takes some energy, especially when running up walls and down massive building towers of doom.
12th, 14th, and 16th Levels were for ability scores I needed to even out those pesky odd numbers I rolled out. Though if I had the flexibility, would've grabbed the following feats had I could:
12th - Lucky - Sometimes a little bit of Luck goes a long way... especially when you flip a double head sided coin.
14th - Defensive Duelist - ROYAL GUARD! (Maybe not in the usual sense of it, but I would use it to cheese it on some enemies just to taunt them.)
16th - Savage Attacker - Just going in there for Damage Per Second mode.
Again I rolled for the stats and used some of those levels for covering my ability score stats, but had I the chance... oh yeah.

Fallen aasimar is good, the transformation is awesome, and i do believe 1 or 4 levels in paladin are welcome. Multiclass for paladin 4/fighter 16 and i believe you're golden. Besides, that way you get more attacks, an extra fighting style (Long range) and more sturdyness from con (so you can actually survive being impaled, like he does on DmC 4, 3 and 1)

I had a pretty good idea for V. Shadow Sorcerer to at least 6th level, then some manner of Warlock to get Pact of the Chain, but none of the Patrons fit quite right. I know Griffon & Co. are technically Fiends, but the Fiendish Patron doesn't really reflect V's skills at all, and while Hexblades do have shadowy stuff going on, they're also way more about killing things with weapons rather than fighting with summons.
He's literally condensed humanity held together by magic, so Variant Human is probably quite fitting, though I honestly have no idea what feat I'd want beyond Warcaster, which would definitely help keep Nightmare swinging longer.
Also, Nero could be an Eldritch Knight or Monster Slayer to account for his Devil Bringer/Breaker abilities. Going Ranger, you'd take the Druidic Warrior fighting style to grab Thorn Whip and Primal Savagery, and going Fighter you could grab both Shocking Grasp and Lightning Lure from the Wizard spell list.

But, using your Fallen idea, I have made Devil Trigger an Action Surge + Necrotic Shroud. Then his build would consist of Warlock Hexblade (for Legendary Sword Dante and summoning it whenever) /Paladin Vengeance (for spells like Misty Step which equates to Trickster teleportation)/Gunslinger Fighter (LITERALLY CALLED GUNSLINGER).
INT is his dump stat because he doesn't show anything justifying otherwise, plus pretty it's obvious what a demon is (Vergil is the studious one who learned how the underworld worked). WIS can be about average because he could figure out Nero's parentage by looking at Yamato. Everything else should be as maxed out as possible.

Crossbow expert doesn't work like that. The attack you need to make to trigger the bonus action attack does not need to be melee, and you couldn't do what you suggest by attack with the longsword then firing the crossbow after the first round because ammunition weapons require a free hand to reload (same reason you can't use a shield with a crossbow). Technically you could attack with the longsword, drop it, reload your crossbow an fire it, then pick up the sword with your free action, but this is a bit janky. You can however attack 3 times with the same hand crossbow once you have extra attack, since it is a one handed weapon.

I would swap Intelligence with Constitution, guy gets stabbed with his own sword multiple times and he walks it off, you know he got good constitution.

I disagree with Paladin. I think Blood Hunter Lycan (if your DM allows you a demon transformation, doesn't change the gameplay), You get a transformation (devil trigger) after only 3 levels in the class.

If we're talking homebrew you can just homebrew your own class for this

hm, while I know strength is good for long sword, but it sounds like if you heavily flavour a rapier, you could do just dexterity as your highest stat. And these builds tend to be without magic items, so you could pick up the ogre gauntlets for that strength boost or a belt of giants strength.

I respect yr approach, but do you feel there's a build that incorporates Fighter or Monk? Maybe Barbarian where its Rage acts like the Devil Trigger? Also; will you ever work in vids that deal with the Gunslinger branch of Fighter?

Could we get a punisher build? I know it's kinda simple, I would just like to see a different take on it

Pretty surprising to see that pact of the blade didn't show up as a way of summoning different devil arms but you could see it as a dmc 1 or 2 Dante with the focus on rebellion and Ebony and Ivory and the later level devil trigger as the sparda transfermation from the first game or the sin devil trigger from the second

I’m curious did you consider taking Oath of Watchers? Since it’s an oath made to battle things from other planes of existence?

Technically speaking Dante and Vergil would be Cambions, Nero would be a Tiefling.

Can you make a video to play Nero as well? I know they will be fairly similar, but with Nero having the versatility of his different robot arms and not having to worry about getting the devil trigger until late game I'm hoping it will be just different enough to be fun in it's own right. Same can be said with V being a kind of Pokemon trainer in a way with his demonic summons.
