How-To: Full Length Hail Claim Inspection ("Scope") with Heather

- Hey Adjusters, some dead time is trimmed out, but this is mostly a full-length claim inspection for hail damage. Pay close attention; there's lots of great stuff to glean from this!
Numbers vary from carrier to carrier. For example, Allstate looks for up to 22 impacts (shingle material and age dependent of course) per 100 SF area. As for "old hail" damage, it is very easy to determine whether hail damage is recent or older than 1 year. In warmer climates, or areas where the average temperature is warm all year, this is readily apparent. As far as coverage is concerned, old or new damaged should not really matter as long as it is within the legally allowed time frame to file a property damage claim (in Indiana, you have up to 10 years after a qualifying date of loss to make a claim regardless of what your carriers says) or if you have a prior claim that allowed for repairs to the roof that were not made (homeowner kept the money or was dissatisfied with insurance results and decided not to pursue further action). Determining damage should never be left to a "test square" if at all possible, because there may be other systemic issues created by storms that do not manifest themselves in that given area or are found in the same quantities over the entire slope of the roof. Damage should be determined for the entire slope, as there is a much larger area of roof to be considered besides that in a single 100 SF area. Surprised they didn't run a Brittle Test, considering how the insurance loves to do individual shingle repairs nowadays.

Walking backwards on a roof is a bad habit, Many seasoned roofers have fell off roofs because of that .

This was a great walk through. I'm moving from a desk position to a hybrid field/desk position. I've never done field work so this has been helpful. I have one question though. Generally, when looking for hail on soft metals, you'll chalk across showing the indentation. Would that not work for the indentation in the shingles? Like why not drag the chalk down the shingle to identify that there is a depression and the damage is not from blistering? Again, thank you for the How-To!!

I’m no expert but it doesn’t look like enough damage to compromise the integrity of the shingles nor the roof. There are two layers of shingles because of overlap so unless the top layer of fiberglass mat and tar is compromised it’s not going to leak. Just seems like a waste to replace it. That’s why our homeowners insurance is so high - everyone wants insurance to pay to replace it.
Hail damages the mat down to the fiberglass and after a year or 2 that will dry rot and that’s why insurance pays for a roof because oh hail.

Heather, I am curious what type of shoes you are wearing and if you think certain shoes seem better (safer) than others? Also, would you wear those same shoes on different surfaces such as tile, slate, etc.?
Cougar paws are the shoe that most roofers go too I believe that’s what she’s wearing
Cougar paws are only really necessary on 10/12 & up....i use my new balances for most that are less than 10/12

Why do carriers vary on deep ness of dents damage to qualify it as damage? Why are some carrier’s asking for 7 And some want more than 7 in a test square?
Whether the damage is located on the edge or in the center of the shingle, isn’t still damage?

Seems to me carriers make their own standards and they can change them anytime they choose to do so.
Its just a Standard Procedure, if they dont have some procedure to move around they cant raise profits. Insurance is necessary but the less they pay out, the more the bonuses are. State Farm gives millions in no payout bonuses or at least used too

I'm new to adjusting. I don't understand why the garage roof wasn't marked and photographed like the house. Is it because the roof on the house was being replaced? If coverage A is replacing is coverage B also. I wasn't sure.
I am a field adjuster and I definitely do the garage also and yes it would be under coverage b, and of course we use eagle view for the measurements of all buildings on the property
I'm retired from a major carrier as their national trainer, and do IA work now. On other structures I usually will quickly mark slope direction and hail impacts, but don't usually count them. The slopes are generally too small. But, she is correct. If you have the same roof, installed at the same time, and the other structure is in proximity to the residence roof, you have already confirmed and documented the directional impacts on the residence roof. There is no value added in doing it again.
I would add, never walk backwards while inspecting a loss, whether on the ground or on a roof. Also, on metal materials, like downspouts, metal fences or siding, use contrasting chalk to help the dent show in the photos.

Hi there! When you speak with the insured, you can ask them if they have any outside animals, and if they do that you request that they be behind a locked fence. Hope this helps!
If the gutters still do the job, why replace them? I personally hate waste and this seems so wasteful.
If damage from hail is covered under the insurance, then the insurance company is obligated to replace them. The insured can deny the replacement though!

If you are working for Allsnake you wont find any damage . If you work for other carriers you will especially if you have a public adjuster baby sitting you.

Andrew, you obviously have no knowledge of how shingles are constructed if the aggregate is knocked off and the shingle is exposed it deteriorates rapidly. Rain doesn’t do this. Hail does.

I got a little queasy when she was getting near the edge.
The first thing to do is walk up, ring the bell, knock on the door and announce your presence. No one should just walk up taking pictures, you could get shot. That is basic courtesy. Where is the homeowner? Were they OK with you putting their home on the internet?

I would expect common courtesy and respect. The homeowner can request royalties for their property being used commercially and can sue for said royalties. A truck in the driveway does not an approval make... The individual, the company represented and the photographer can all be litigated against. I would take this video down immediatley to avoid litigation. This was a private location, not public, so liable is evident upon the poster.

I've already been compensated for this video. You are correct, I wasn't notified before but after finding out about it I contacted them. Would have been cheaper for them to just ask my permission. An expensive lesson learned for them.
A lot of waste and pollution to make shingles. Whoever invents a procedure to repair hail damage quickly without replacing roof will become rich.

This REALLY should not be up here! You're going to get some yeahoo policyholder or contractor who now thinks they "know" how to scope a loss and try to argue it with their adjuster. Furthermore, you're going to end up with some attorney who enters this into evidence and tries to call into question other adjusters actions.
yeah you sure wouldn't want the customer, they guy who pays all the bills, to know anything about what they can claim and what they can't. Lots better to let the insurer just steam roll over them, keep the money and whistle off down the road.

First off that isn't hail she is circling , heat blistering and shingle defects maybe . Ther is no pattern of hail on the roof or any good collateral to support a case , and I'm a contractor . I meet engineers , adjusters all day long you buy anything I can tell from your videos . You don't even sound educated about hail damage or roofs at all your just out spending insurance company's money hahahaa

It's a lot easier for an adjuster to pay a claim than it is to not pay the claim. IAs make more while staff like myself can pay it and move on. Not paying it involves a lot more. You claiming (pun Intended) "scammer" only tells me you have no idea what you are talking about.
