I have no idea unfortunately. I haven't been invited to anything and all I could extract from the UK press team (at this event) was that the first UK cars arrive at some point during a 3 month period know as summer. I suspect seeing as the cars are rolling off WOB production line that an international press launch is imminent seeing as configurator is open for the 4 trim levels (assuming they will bother)

Yes and no - it's all about the Benefit in Kind tax, I covered this in the Taycan vs S4 TDI video, it was like £600 pa for the Taycan and £6k for the A4 TDI which was around 60% of the price of the Taycan (S4 no longer on sale). So company car drivers would be mad to buy this as in one year they'd save the extra cost to 'upgrade' to the hybrid (don't know the exact figures but it's a no brainer).

Good video Andrew - I have a 2019 190bhp AllTrack with 4motion and it’s been an excellent reliable car: comfortable, spacious with great carrying capacity and a good gutsy diesel engine ( same as the Golf GTD) so plenty of power and torque and the 4motion gives added security in winter/wet weather. Not sure about the styling of the new one but sometimes you have to see it in person. So glad you mentioned about why buy a SUV ( Tiguan etc) when the carrying capacity, spacious and driveability is far better in estates. Why is the range of engines in the Passat so limited compared to what is offered in Europe. The equivalent new Skoda in the UK will offer a greater range of options including diesels and 4motion - also more powerful petrol engines. I suspect the 1.5 is for the private motorist and the two plug-in hybrids are for company car drivers.

Excellent review Andrew - Passat in Vic has become the local police fleet car of choice along with highway patrol BMWs - wagon most popular here but being dropped as no demand for non SUVs unfortunately
Thanks Malcolm, interesting feedback on Police wheels in AUS. VW's are rare over here as proper traffic cop cars but they do exist, it's mainly Volvo now, BMWs have lost the contract I gather.
I've read that the MIB4 system is really just a reskinning of the MIB3 system. More of an MIB3.5. The mapping (by HERE) looks near identical and some of the HMI screens like Drive Modes, Driver Assist, Park Assist etc... are the same. If you've got the latest 1969 update for the LG MOI3/MIB3 then it looks equally fluid to this. Unfortunately the OTA updates are very slow to roll out. Also if the software version is older than 1941 then OTA updates fail to appear. So there are a lot of owners out there still suffering with software issues and needlessly.
I run a 2018 TSFI 220 bhp B8 R line estate which i opted out of the co cars scheme with. I really like it. Im a bit concerned that the German manufacturer's used to call the UK 'treasure Island' many years ago before the existence of the EU , and now post Brexit they're all fleecing us again because they can ?!?!
I’ve never (in last 10 years) found cars in Europe cheaper than here, new or used. Market forces will decide on the price of new cars. VW have some strong competition now and factories are back in full swing so expect 10-15% discounts to be common. However I paid £32k for my brand new Mk8 CS in march 2021 and expect inflation since then to mean I’ll never get even close to that sort of deal again - £38k today 😬
I wouldn't have a "Milk Float" given, other than to sell it at a loss. Petrol, petrol, petrol every single time. Mild hybrid is okay to fill in the power gaps, but EVs are a joke.
It will be interesting. The hybrid versions we will probably see a lot more of because the ID7 pure EV is similar money but interior is less good and you only get one source of propulsion (and a flawed one at that).
Red is good for photos but rarely suits big cars so a grey might do it. As usual the wheels don’t help, even if you can get 19s, they will still be stuck in the arches too far. Interior is very good though at least
@@volkswizard I just spent some time on the Volkswagen configurator and made one in grey with the 19s. As you can probably imagine the design of these leaves a lot to be desired and they do indeed still look lost. Be interesting to see some out and about but I’m a fan overall
You need the Tiguan to load kids and babies in without breaking your back Andrew - I've got a PHEV Tiguan mk 2.5 and it's an excellent family car. In my opinion, like rim brake road bikes which I know you will appreciate, modern road bikes all look the same and are all disc brake. Like road bikes the sweetspot from an aesthetic and design perspective for the Passat was back in 2017 in saloon form, even if the modern car is much better equipped from a tech and economy perspective. This Passat takes design cues from the iD4 which in my opinion looks hideous, good review though.
Thanks John. I guess emissions are screwing up design language now too. With regards to babies and SUVs I understand that but I bet that’s a tiny proportion of SUV buyers. Also it amazes me how many parents ferry their kids around in inefficient SUVs with no thought to the climate emergency that will impact their children significantly more than them. It’s even worse that many of these vehicles originate from China (including Volvo) who is trying very hard to subvert western society and support Russia. End of rant 😬
As you say andrew A 1.5 petrol engine, big BIK and over the £40k luxury ved is going to be a firm NO for any company car user who can choose what they drive.
I didn't think of VED and luxury car tax. Just checked and with a hybrid you dodge the BIK hike (5% if it does 70+ on electric range which hybrid does) but you still get the LCT which a pure EV dodges - still that's a small price to pay for no range anxiety. There will be a cheaper model sub £40k but it won't be a hybrid so impossible to dodge one or the other sadly
Sadly it’s no looker. AND. Over years SW / Estate Passats looked ace !!!! Sad we’ve gone full circle now in the era of tragic design. 19/20 cars bettter looking earlier generations. What. Crap. No diesel Passats. What a crack pot clown world we live in. We don’t need mega size iPads. We need traditional door handles full size spare wheels. Old school handbrakes and good design. Not insane size iPads and haptic feedback
@@volkswizard crazy that current smaller capacity petrol hybrids reached 65 mpg with cylinder deactivation. And yet we’re getting unproven EV tech down our next
I have had three passat's i won't be buying this one, Far to expensive. I think the bmw 320i touring is a far better looking car and better value for money.
Hybrid is the diesel for company car owners in UK. Probably is when they are clapped out after 4 years and 60k with no warranty, used car buyers may not find them so appealing
I’m not keen on that screen. I think it’s a poor solution just to stick an iPad style screen on the dash, and as mentioned by someone else - what about the safety?
VW aren't the first, Tesla have done it for years and no record of extra accidents as a result of driver inattentiveness (Autopilot is a different story!). The new Passat has so many safety systems which is probably no coincidence. What is a good is that the screen is in the perfect position. What is bad though is that the air vents are too low and I bet more likely to cause accidents due to drowsiness. My Golf 8 was bad like that
I beg to differ - I used to sell ex-lease B5 1.9 TDIs with 100k miles up them no problems. B6 2.0 TDI 140 starts coming through and it's not a good look when they have be towed through the auction with the engine largely in boot - I think the balancer shaft was...shafted. General build quality was OK to be fair but it wasn't a good car for a few years. Their only real plus was that they drove really nicely, just like Mk5 Golf which they were based on. Previous B5 model was effectively an Audi A4 for VW money (just like the original was very similar to an Audi) and the accountants couldn't allow that forever.
Cheap. Infotainment screen that sticks out. No plastic window surrounds in interior. You can see external red metal from the inside of the car. Ridiculous. External window trim on front doors is not straight. It bends near the rear view mirror. Who designed this? No powerful engines. Why not to put 2.5l 5 cylinder engine from rs3 there. Idiots. Cheap carpets. Small wheels for the size of the car. Wheel should be higher than middle line of the car. Only that way the car will look nice.
It looks a lot better inside when you don't have to see the outside and all the bells and whistles take the price to silly levels, nice presentation though.
Thanks - as long as you like the video that's all I care about :) had 90 mins to film a 23 min video which believe it or not isn't easy and took a lot of prep but was good fun and VW laid on the perfect filming environment having learned from previous events geared towards those who write, and don't film.
@@volkswizard no need to waste time beating around the bush. We all know VW has completely lost the plot. There is nothing going for this car. Old passat is a design marvel for this.
If you want an electric car then great but this isn't an electric car so it's not really a fair comparison. Looking at sales and Tesla's slashing of prices, it's not going to end well and depreciation of EVs is tragic. So outside of a PCP funded which will be heavily by the manufacturer (and one that you absolute must not terminate early even if you hate the car or circumstances change as the penalties are huge) no EV is better VFM than a good ICE car when you look at the total cost of ownership. And manufacturers won't be able to afford to lose so much on PCP EVs so it's only a matter of time before something gives. PS I like the way and EV drives, I don't like depreciation on any car
Would definitely be interesting to have another vid to compare this with the Superb 4 - I really like the pics I've seen of the Skoda interior, including its multifunction physical climate control dials.

You like the review and the car? Wow that’s a first I think😄Glad you did anyway. Not sure who will buy it, only on press fleet I assume because hybrids haven’t arrived yet so they are getting the word out with this one
Attractive and premium looking, had a mk7 estate and loved it, practical load luggers
I think it looks lovely, so aggressive, and steering wheel is much better
👍👍
Will there be a Passat r?
I doubt it and if there will be it will be so bloody expensive. I think VW learned with Arteon R it's a bridge too far
Very smart.
I love that they still make the Passat, not much different to the Tiguan though, just less mumsy.
Surprisingly similar to Tiguan on paper but inside Tiguan is less good, why? I have no idea.
Great review Andrew 👍
Thanks so much Jay 👍 Considering it was a 90 min filming slot I'm glad I am not being told it's a crap review :)
I'll stick with my R36 thanks.
I’d like to stick with your R36 💙
I wouldn't have a "Milk Float" given, other than to sell it at a loss.
Petrol, petrol, petrol every single time. Mild hybrid is okay to fill in the power gaps, but EVs are a joke.
Oh dear. I look forward to seeing one per year.
It will be interesting. The hybrid versions we will probably see a lot more of because the ID7 pure EV is similar money but interior is less good and you only get one source of propulsion (and a flawed one at that).
I've always liked passats but this is too weird I don't like it. Vw styling was on point a few years ago this looks more like a Peugeot
Very impressed with the interior. Exterior wise I’m not sure. Maybe with bigger wheels and a different colour it may appeal more to me I don’t know.
Has there ever been an estate only bodywork version of a car?
That’s a great question. Before I rack my brains I wonder if China has a saloon version?

As you say andrew
A 1.5 petrol engine, big BIK and over the £40k luxury ved is going to be a firm NO for any company car user who can choose what they drive.
I didn't think of VED and luxury car tax. Just checked and with a hybrid you dodge the BIK hike (5% if it does 70+ on electric range which hybrid does) but you still get the LCT which a pure EV dodges - still that's a small price to pay for no range anxiety. There will be a cheaper model sub £40k but it won't be a hybrid so impossible to dodge one or the other sadly
its crazy that there stopping diesels such a shame Glad ive bought a new diesel mercedes now even though my golf estate gttd was best car i ever had
You won’t like the door handles on ID7 then 😬Only really positive is efficiency, diesel mpg from petrol is impressive
@@volkswizard crazy that current smaller capacity petrol hybrids reached 65 mpg with cylinder deactivation. And yet we’re getting unproven EV tech down our next
You must be kidding right ? The last generations looked better ?? Wait, how old are you ? 😂
@@geronimooo260 47 currently, not getting younger
@@zzhughesd 45 here, I get you
I’ll not be replacing my Tiguan R (one of the best cars I’ve ever owned) with one of these. Any Passat I’ve ever had has been a total yawn to drive.
I have had three passat's i won't be buying this one, Far to expensive. I think the bmw 320i touring is a far better looking car and better value for money.
3 series is due a facelift so plenty of time for BMW to ruin that car's so far inoffensive looks (4 series/M3 excluded)
I prefer the 2006 passat
Sadly VW are stopping importing estate cars here in Australia 🇦🇺 it’s all SUVs 😢
Always liked Passat estates, but think this is a horribly over-designed machine. Like most VWs lately.
I can see them losing sales by not having a diesel
My Golf 8 was bad like that
Brother ueewwwww…..eughhhhhh.
Those Alloys 🤮
Too much “Korean” these new Volkswagen. I prefer the last generation design
Mk6 Passat was the best built Passat
The past was better, okay pal
Still loathe touch screens in cars. Highly dangerous.
Thanks - as long as you like the video that's all I care about :) had 90 mins to film a 23 min video which believe it or not isn't easy and took a lot of prep but was good fun and VW laid on the perfect filming environment having learned from previous events geared towards those who write, and don't film.
frankly, it's a nice car, but they got too expensive this generation. a decent spec is 40-45-50k euros. what?
I just don't get why would you need such a big screen in a car. This is a step too far for me.
Have you been in a Tesla? It’s all screen in there and they’ve sold a few so it’s apparently what people want
You can get a smaller screen than the one in the video. It also has a 12” screen standard
Frankly disgusting.
Very concise :)
@@volkswizard no need to waste time beating around the bush. We all know VW has completely lost the plot. There is nothing going for this car. Old passat is a design marvel for this.
Model Y is way way better value for money as a familly car
Plus, and let’s be honest here for a minute : the model Y is a dull generic SUV with no personality whatsoever, when the Passat is a sexy break
First
Nice one rasher :)
That looks awful…🫣 My 2016 Skoda Superb 3 estate is far better looking..! Says it all really…
Have to agree, think the older and newer Skoda Superb estate look much better.
Would definitely be interesting to have another vid to compare this with the Superb 4 - I really like the pics I've seen of the Skoda interior, including its multifunction physical climate control dials.
Really ? I don’t think so, the superb is fine but really dull, the Passat is far sexier
Your Skoda superb is a Passat with knickers
@@Rotciv1929 No shit Sherlock, but my 2016 Superb is better looking than that 2024 Passat.
