  • Hi,
    This is a fun DIY video in which we show you how to make a fish pond,water cascade and a small garden in the flower bed balcony.
    If you are looking for an activity which kids will enjoy or an economical balcony decorating idea , then you are at the right place.
    P.s. Guppy fish are a must as they eat mosquitoes and their larvae thus avoiding the multiplication.
    NOTE VERY IMPORTANT:
    Make this pond only if you have an experience of keeping an aquarium.
    Please try this in reality with the local Aquarium vendor's ( an expert ) suggestions and modifications suggested by him/ her like.
    1. Which fish species to be kept together (Fighter male or beta is not suggested to be kept with other fishes)
    2. which ones will be good for an outdoor pond in your climate.
    3. How to clean, filter and maintain the pond.
    You will get the fountain pump here:
    goo.gl/2wqhxg
    Bubble air compressor here
    goo.gl/jChEtR
    For algae removal for pond maintenance :

      I have my own. I can suggest from my experience that you can keep angel fish in such type of pond in your balcony. I bought 2 angel fishes from the shop in 2013 and they are still alive.

    • @Designcalling
      @Designcalling  7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Hey thank you so much !
      You need not change the water, all the dirt in water gets accumulated on collander ( net utensil ) which is a food for scavenger fishes like sucker, eel and catfish. So you only add water ( chlorine free ) to maintain level as there will always be water loss due to evaporation.

      No bird large enough would care to mess with them. I don't know about India but in the USA we have hawks Eagles and here a lot of ospreys which could be a problem, but with this being surrounded by the rails and enclosed it would be no problem. But hiding spaces are always needed and will solve that problem

      Cascading water helps in maintaining the internal temperature. We have this pond since an year, recreated it for shooting. It has survived one summer heat. Delicate fishes like angel and discus fish which need temperature control may not survive extreme temperature changes.

      She's seriously got no idea. At least do your research before keeping live animals. There's a thing called nitrogen cycle and filtration!!!! A filter is a must with partial water changes regularly. Or it's just a doom pond for your fishes! Lady you keep copy pasting the same reply on everyone's comment... Try to acknowledge the fact that what so many people are asking could really be a matter of concern!!!!!! Fix your filtration system!!

    First of all heat and cold would not allow your fishes to survive. Second, is the water need to be clean and top up regularly due to evaporation. Third, mosquitoes and birds will attract. I think balcony pond idea is a disaster.

      some tips from exp.
      1: add a filter. it will help a lot in keeping water clean (visually and chemically) which is good for fishes in long run. (you can buy one or make a diy filter which is easy)
      2: if have problems from birds of prey, make some cave among the rocks reusing old broken clay pots. it also looks aesthetically pleasing. or you can opt for a mesh net.
      3. since it is in open there is high possibility of algae, so some algae- eating fish will be a cool addition.
      4. if ur fishes die then google about aquarium cycles or visit fishlore.com , if u know it all then its good.

    • @Designcalling
      @Designcalling  7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Hey thanks for watching !
      You need not change the water, all the dirt in water gets accumulated on colander ( net utensil ) which is a food for scavenger fishes like sucker, eel and catfish. So you only add water ( chlorine free ) to maintain level as there will always be water loss due to evaporation. And if at all you find leaves and dirt floating around you can use a simple fish net to remove it.
      Delicate aquarium fishes which need temperature, salt and regular cleaning are not advisable here. Always consult the aquarium shop staff while buying fishes.

      Please research on fish keeping to see how waste and other bio material breaks down and causes toxic chemicals to build up in the water and also on how to filter these out.. Else it would be inhumane for the fish.. Also please partially change the water weekly.

      Aditya R for partial changing just divert flow out side pump for a while into a container or use separate suction siphon to remove water. In later you can target dirts and pull dirt also. After removing 20 to 50% of water slowly add fresh water without disturbing stones or arrangements. The best time to change water is early morning. The fresh water can be kept overnight in a container next to pond to get same temperature.

I don't see how any life can thrive in such a muddy dirty stagnant water.. I wouldn't want to sit and admire fishes suffering to breathe under dirty water and plastic.. I'd rather just have a garden sans the water tragedy.. loved the idea.. could have been executed cleaner..

    Hi, lovely idea. I want to make a smaller lotus pond set up in my house.
    However I have seen that the water becomes green and murky after sometime due to algae growth even after putting fish in the pond. Algae also start growing on the rocks kept at the bottom of the pool.

      But again I have a question for water leakage issues, I did kind of same by dumping soil mix with Coco pit and added flowers. But would it affect the concrete structure in terms of leakage, as might with time this plastic sheet will get rupture and slowly it start collecting water in the same place, but we wouldn't know if it's water stored in PVc sheet or the concrete pit.

      Hey the dirt in water gets accumulated on collander ( net utensil ) which is a food for scavenger fishes like sucker, eel and catfish. As no dirt enters the fountain pump, filter isn't required. Temperature is favorable for fishes here in Mumbai. Heater might be required in a different location where there is major fluctuation in temperature. Please consult the local Aquarium vendor for the requirement of heater.

      Do we need filter if direct enter in the water fall? What about the ammonia, nitrite & nitrate?

    • @Designcalling
      @Designcalling  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes you will require a filter in front of the pump entry if the colander isn't used, this will also avoid fishes from entering the pump. We have placed aquatic plants near the colander as they maintain the nitrate levels in the water. Due to evaporation in the waterfall there is approx. 20 % of water loss every week, addition of fresh chlorine free water every week also helps in maintaining the balance.
      Hope this helps !
