    Montaer MC01 Has Arrived
    The first airshow in too long, Sun ‘n Fun 2021 is where Montaer made its formal debut to American pilots. Displayed in Paradise City - Sun ‘n Fun’s main light aircraft area - MC01 jumped out to get your attention in a bright red, white, and black paint job.
    Montaer Aeronaves, the Brazilian company name, formed in late 2013 “with the aim of bringing innovation to national aviation.” An engineer who formerly worked with Paradise Aircraft, Bruno de Oliveira leads the company. If you think Montaer looks remarkably like Paradise and the P1NG, you’d be right though Bruno reported he has made “numerous changes and refinements.”
    Montaer’s MC01 starts with 4130 molybdenum steel tube “to provide greater safety to the crew.” MC01 is skinned with an aluminum fuselage and wings. These materials are popular with American pilots who are aware they can achieve repairs almost anywhere.
    MC01 is powered with the 100 horsepower Rotax 912 that now also offers service not only all over the U.S., but around the world.
    Aimed at GA Pilots -Montaer followed the lead of Paradise in using a control configuration that will seem completely familiar to the legions of pilots that have been trained in Cessnas and Pipers.
    MC01 has dual control yokes with a steerable nose wheel and dual toe brakes. Although many Sport Pilots say they prefer - or at least have adjusted to - joystick control, many pilots find control yokes preferable. No joystick option is presently available.
    However, Montaer has also followed Paradise’s lead by offering hand controls to accommodates pilots who want to fly but have lost the use of their legs. In fact, the very first American purchase of Montaer MC01 is going to such a pilot up near Oshkosh. I’m sure I join many others in congratulating Bruno and Montaer in making arrangements for such people to achieve their dreams of flight.
    Features of MC01 - MC01 is well equipped with a 10-inch Garmin G3X Touch screen, a G5 back-up system, GMC 507 autopilot, and a GTX 35R transponder with ADSB out.
    Elevator trim controls are provided on both yokes. At the base of the instrument panel pilots will find all circuit breakers and other switches. Throughout this design, you see a layout that most pilots will find familiar and comfortable. All these common controls may help pilots quickly adapt to flying Light-Sport.
    Montaer has installed all leather seats, headliner and side panels. The interior fit and finish will please most pilots. Both seats are fully adjustable forward and back allowing, for comfort for tall and short people. These adjustments can be made while sitting in the seat. Yet MC01’s seats do more.
    Again similar to Paradise models - which are no longer available in the USA - MC01 has fully-reclining seats. While the company said, “This is important for tall people to adjust the seats for more head space,” it brings additional benefits. For example, if you want to camp in your MC01, the reclining seats can provide a sleeping surface. The aft cabin has sufficient of room to permit this.
    Three-Door Configuration
    Although Jabiru offers three doors on their J-250 and J-230 series, no other LSA producer offers a full human-entry-sized door aft of the main two doors most Light-Sport Aircraft offer. Paradise has such an arrangement and so does Montaer. However, the two airplanes diverge as Montaer puts the third door on the right side of the aircraft where Paradise was on the left.
    That third door pairs nicely with the hand controls. “A large third door allows pilots with the need to carry their wheel chairs,” Montaer noted. While all pilots will applaud the easier access to the spacious baggage area, such access can be the deal maker for a pilot wishing to take his wheel chair along. That is something to celebrate, I believe.

    ...still waiting for someone to take up the Ercoupe design once again. It was, and is, the safest design going for single engine, fixed wing a/c. Fred Wick knew what he was doing all those years ago. Should an inspired manufacturer take up this design, I'd buy two!

    One correction, here in Brazil it’s only 2 places and not 4 as said on the video, because here is a LSA and in this class is limited 2 places only, the third door is only to get easier to put the things behind the seats

      Was the 1680 lb gross weight correct? Because that would be the most compelling fact IF the new 2022 regs raise LSA weight. Two people and full tanks with baggage would make this a great plane for Sport Pilots who want to go cross country.

      @@azcoyote007 Here in Brazil we still use the 1320lb limit for LSA's, but this plane was tested and certified for 1680lb already, so it's just a matter of changing the regulations and the heavier operation will be possible with no further modifications.

    I’d recommend sticking to a standard formula for reviewing airplanes so you get consistent information each time. A simple outline would work well. Start out with the basics like useful load, engine type, prop type, wing span, avionics, etc. Then cover performance numbers, fit and finish, useful options, cabin space. It’s hard to compare one versus another.

      I too would prefer to hear all the specs up front, in fact
      a base price wouldn't hurt, they don't need to go into every
      option right off, but all the basic numbers as you say.
      (also this interviewee was great but seriously, giving
      us mph numbers without stating as much, makes you
      wonder.. lol, to the point that Dan had to ask/correct him,
      I think we all want to here the MPH figures, but not before
      we hear the knots..)

    The closest competitors appear to be the Vashon Ranger and Texas Colt, and maybe a couple of other high-wing LSAs. It would be useful if someone could post a comparison spreadsheet...

    Very nice design. Wing almost looks composite it is so well finished. Vne 117 kts seemed a bit low. Also, I wonder if it will use the 912is and if there is a brs option.

    Nice plane. Price is listed at $145,000. Seems a little high for a two-seat light sport when a used Cessna 150 can be had for less than $25,000, and they will soon be in the light sport category. That said, this is a real contender when you consider the fact that a new Cessna 172 is in the $400,000 range now. I think this is the main reason so many people are moving to ultralights or building their own airplane.

      @@mauriceevans6546 BushCat is a Trilam fabric airplane (not metal). I have seen a BushCat and it's a tube and fabric construction and the finish on it had a lot to be desired. I personally went with A22LS for myself.

    A little confused about the Brazilian regs... So the AC is designed to carry 1680lbs, but was brought down to 1320 for the US market? If the baggage compartment can only carry 77lbs of luggage, where is the CG and how did they originally distribute 1680lbs?

      The numbers were brought down on paper only, doesn't affect the original weight distribution. May not matter once new light sport rules are out.

      The baggage or rear seats are located on the C of G. The 77 lbs. is a number used to fit into the LSA category.

    Q. Why bother with "Electric trim" on a 1320 pound airplane??????????
    Decades ago, I flew rented Cessna 150's, a 1600 pound airplane. With the manual trim set at neutral all day long! I was trying to learn exactly what the live feed back pressure on the controls was like, in every possible attitude. Monkeying around with the trim wheel just made that sort of learning impossible. And I found out, the 150 flew just fine, all day long, with trim in neutral!
    So, again: WHY bother with electric trim in any LSA ?
    Real pilots simply don't need it.
