- Surviving in the shadows during the decades before the Stonewall Rebellion, gay African American composer/lyricist BILLY STRAYHORN was one of America's most influential jazz musicians. He created the most famous songs introduced Duke Ellington's big band (including "Take the A Train), but Strayhorn rarely gained the recognition he deserved. Award-winning jazz pianist Alan Broadbent collaborated with the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles for this full-fledged tribute to Strayhorn, joined onstage by a big band, and most notably, the remarkable talents of Mr. BILLY PORTER, directed by Tony-winner Joanna Gleason. Here is Porter's first act solo, "Lush Life," composed by then-16-year-old Billy Strayhorn, the song that launched his career with Duke Ellington.
Recorded at the Alex Theatre, April 2007.
