  • In March 2004, Dr. Albert McNeil and his Jubilee Singers stepped onstage to celebrate the 25th Anniversary season of the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles. The Jubilee Singers are dedicated to preserving African American classics, breathing new life into traditional spirituals with trained voices and polished staging. Here is the full 21-minute set conducted by the late Dr. McNeil, who died at age 102 in 2022. Filmed at the Alex Theatre, March 2004.

I was blessed to have (then) Mr. McNeill as my teacher at Audubon Junior High School in Los Angeles in the early 60's. He was amazing. In Girls Glee and later Choir (that you had to audition to get in the class!) middle school kids in a multicultural neighborhood learned about singing, performing and deportment. If he caught any of us chewing gum on campus he would call us out on it! Even today, and I only buy gum at the airport for takeoff and landing, I think "Uh oh - Mr. McNeill would not like this." We all adored him.
