      @John Elway A prop fouler works only when the propeller is spinning, the propeller spinning is what causes the fouler to get wrapped around the propeller, if they stop the propellers then the fouler does not work. the ship would stop if they disengaged the propeller, however they would in no way be disabled and once they are sure the line is not underneath the boat they can happily continue as normal.

      Propellers do not just stop when you have such a heavy machine moving through the water it's called momentum

    • @zaraambramotte5434
      @zaraambramotte5434 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@thecloneguyz The amount of momentum in a propeller is pretty small. almost every boat has a button to stop the propeller spinning in an instant, smaller boats have a different feature where the propeller folds in, however on larger ships where thats impractical the is a big button called the "Emergency stop" which stops the propeller immediately (It exists for a few reasons but one being that pirates learnt to use prop fouling)
      What you refer to with momentum in the water is the boat itself, which the boat definitely still has when the engine stops (This is why the emergency stop doesn't mean the pirates can instantly board a ship, its still going at speed) it can take over 20 minutes for a ship to stop after the propeller stops. however movement through the water is not how a prop fouler works, it works due to the propeller spinning (The propeller wraps the fouler around itself), so simply stopping it for abit, letting the fouler go past and restarting is something that many ships are designed to be able to do.
      The propeller technically does have some momentum in its spin, however it is fairly minimal and the propeller shaft can withstand the force of forcing the propeller to stop. Ask yourself how long does it take for the wheels on a car to stop spinning and for you to start skidding (Lets pretend that ABS doesn't exist), now imagine its a multi million dollar sports car whos brakes are worth more than most peoples life savings
      So TL:DR if a boat wants its propeller to stop spinning, it immediately stops spinning. there is no momentum strong enough to keep it spinning past the crew pressing the "emergency stop" button.

    Put steel cable in the water on floats when they sail over hopefully the prop catches it?

    • @strikeforcek9149
      @strikeforcek9149 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's the general idea. The propeller shaft spinning, and the prop catching the line, will spin the line around the prop shaft really fast until it's wrapped so tight that it acts as a constrictive brake that immediately stresses the drivetrain. It can also wear grooves into the prop shaft, ruin master seals and flax packing/stuffing boxes, and render a vessel dead in the water or only to travel as sub 10nmph speeds.
      The only caveat is that large vessels, and captains of large vessels, know to just kill the engines and coast or simply troll extremely slow and eliminate prop fouling line from taking hold and working.
      Many vessels... MOST vessels have a "line cutter" apparatus installed on their prop shafts to prevent this very thing from happening. It's like a giant washer with extremely sharp lifted edges on it that cut and shred anything that wraps the prop shaft. They're about 85% effective, so it's still wise to disengage prop shaft, apply shaft brakes to stop rotation, and just drift over the prop fouling threats.

    • @thesausage351
      @thesausage351 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@strikeforcek9149 I’m curious why they don’t use a different tactic. They should use their 2 fast boats, have a big net with steel cable on either side, and put big nuts, bearing shells, steel, a whole bunch of shit along the cable, and a float on the end, with a gps device. Drop the net in the water, and each craft move aside so they’re travelling a few meters to the side of the target, with the net submerged at prop level in the middle. Chase the vessel down and let the net wrap onto the prop and draw in the steel cable and all the assorted shit, and the 2 fast boats can then return. No timing the release, no being hit by water cannons, just approach from the rear, and then break off.

    • @strikeforcek9149
      @strikeforcek9149 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thesausage351 the reason they probably don't do something like that is cost, and legality.
      If it wraps and the prop spins one of the bearings or a chunk of steel out, it'll launch like a rocket and could kill someone rather easily. Then, they'd be answering to something much bigger and much more illegal than just petty vandalism.
      The best way to disable a large vessel like that is simply foul the propshaft with heavy braided line. Get it near the prop and it'll instantly wrap up and foul it from going anywhere until they can get teams of divers out there to cut it free (which isn't easy at all, and very time consuming).

    • @thesausage351
      @thesausage351 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@strikeforcek9149 fair enough. Forget the missiles, it just seems to make more sense to approach from the rear. Less time for captain to react as he couldn’t see the boats, more direct route to the prop/shaft also

    • @strikeforcek9149
      @strikeforcek9149 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thesausage351 It makes much sense to approach from the rear. I think the major problem is the logistics and risk of it. If that prop gets caught and either one of the boats don't let go in time, it's ripping the boat right under water (you'd have to wait for it to get caught until you release the line, otherwise the ship would just drive past away from it).
      The best thing to do is be far out of sight, and release two unassuming boats and box the ship in with tightlines just a few feet underwater and wait for the ship to go over them in its own accord unassuming of anything. Lol
