I enjoyed this brief run down of tips and tricks, so I would love a video that goes more in depth on this topic. I love taking WIP photos of my minis, but once they are painted, a scenic or dramatic photo is always a good idea. Another suggestion for a video from you would be how to record a video while painting miniatures - or even how a live broadcast works. I'd love to record my painting process and create videos about it and the hobby myself.
I’m a creative director for an advertising agency and I’m always intrigued by lighting setups for shoots. I have struggled for years to get good mini photos and I would love a cook’s tour of how you setup up for shooting your minis. By the way - great work!
Of course, it would be awesome to see the full process/ One thing is to hear the theory and another way is to see it in action! Looking forward to that!
These camera and photography videos are great! The tip about taking a photo from below the miniature was very helpful, I'm looking forward to trying that.
Great tips, Atom! Photography is my primary way of enjoying the hobby for the last few years and it's always cool to see how other people approach things.
Great tips 😁👍 What you also could add, is to place the phone on the side, and use the surface as the stand. But, most phones have the camera on one side. So, when you turn the phone, so the camera is on the underside, you can make low angle shots too! Great show again! Thanks Uncle A.
I think this is the next phase of my painted minis, staging story shots. It might even help me to let go of some of these models/armies if I have some great photos to keep.
Wonderfully helpful video! Always wanted to get into taking better pictures of my terrain and miniatures but never quite knew where to start. The suggestions for apps and lighting and even the screenshots of the Amazon items really make it easy to wrangle together what's needed to get there. Much appreciated! Great work.
For photo editing/digital painting-art I discovered Affinity Photo. I didn't want to spend the money on Adobe's sub so I took a chance. It's a great piece of software for an alternative. Plus Affinity has a full suite of alternatives: Designer (Illustrator) and Publisher (InDesign) and about twice a year, they put all 3 on sale for $75 total. Free updates.
This video was really really helpful on hints and tips for photographing your miniatures what ever size they may be. I’ll be rewatching this video to remember in the future.
A video about the photo shoot, especially talking through your thinking and your goals for the final photos as you adjust things, would be great! I'd watch that for sure.
I really like this video. Very good tip and tricks without spending a lot of money. Especially if your just getting started. A video of you going from start to finish setting thing up and maybe some basic editing on snapseed would be wonderful to see.
Another Lightroom user here. Pet hate in miniature photography here - people who use cluttered background, such as their paint bottle rack, especially when it's in better focus than the figures. Like the tip about using cam apps. Perhaps a future video could be a shoot using one explaining why the particular settings? Thanks
Another tip. Cropping is not a dirty word. Use it to make a focused subject look bigger and fill the frame. Also helpful if you use a long focal length to blur the background and you have to get more of the stage in the shot. Photos have so much mega pixels you will be fine taking some of it away on the edges.
Adam, I’ve been a fan of your channel for years and I really found this video super helpful. I learned so much from this that will really help with my Instagram photography. I’ve been trying to improve my mini photography of late and some of your tips will help me take things to the next level. Thank you so much for the great video content and all you contribute to our community.
Yes, I'd love to see you do a video of a full photo shoot. Or even a live chat so we could ask questions in the chat while you were doing the phot shoot.
A couple of things I’ve done: buy a box of yummy chocolates with coloured cellophane wrappers (Quality Street in the UK were my choice), this thin plastic is really easy to pull tight over an LED torch and secure with a rubber band; second thing is to bounce light or provide an instant background, I use one of those pop-up windscreen sun-shields that cost about £5 from your internet retailer of choice. Light enough to hold in place with one hand, big reflective area and folds down small enough to pack away with my camera.
This has been really helpful as i struggle with pictures. I for one would love to see a "start to finish" video of your process. Thank you for all your helpful tips and tricks!
Photo editing used to be a much bigger deal in the early 00's . I can remember people getting banned from CMON for doing anything more then basic light adjustment in the image. Great video, thanks.
This is a hobby I didn't know I needed. I've felt like I should be taking photos of my minis but it just seemed like it would be a boring chore. This kind of photography I could really get into!
Appreciate the insight on photos. I'm one who takes pictures on a white background and it's part because I like the simplicity but probably more so to do with not having any good terrain. Motivation to go paint some terrain up, check. Would definitely be interested in how you would run through a photo shoot of not only a single model but also setting up a larger group shot or battle. What sorts of tricks you use to pull the viewers focus onto what you're trying to show and how to hide/disguise stuff not intended on being in the scene etc.
I'm absolutely interested in more photography videos, deeper technical dives and overviews of shoots, ideas for practical use o these ads, bring it on, yep
If you have a Samsung phone with an spen like the Note 20, you can use your spen as a camera remote. You can also add "pro" controls to your Samsung camera app. Samsung doesn't do everything right, but they do a pretty good job on the photography front.
I think it would be really cool to see a video of a full setup and shoot. I've always been unsatisfied with the photos I take of my mini's, and this video gave some great tips for me to try out. Plus, as you said, this could be something that helps me get out of my painting funk. Haven't picked up a brush in several months now.
Didn't think of doing the lower camera angles, I'll that that asap. Thanks! (I'm still using CS2 for all my graphics work. Paid for in full and I've got my work flow set.)
This was very timely. I just purchased an RGB LED ring light to help with my videography and photography. I’m using a Sony camera as my main camera and a GoPro for my B Roll. I’m actually starting my own channel dedicated to budget war gaming and tabletop stuff.
Dude! You should try building some really cool dioramas! I’ve been getting suggested a lot of diorama building videos on TH-cam lately... for some reason. It seems REALLY fun. Been thinking about building little dioramas for my best squads to hang out in between playing. Seems like a fun place to start.
Really enjoyed this one. I’m not a display painter at all but often feel like my photos make my things look even worse 😂. Lots of good thoughts in here. This is another case me connecting with the angle you approach the hobby from.
Nice video as always. Kudos for the timer idea on tripods. So I use the standard camera app on my Android just out of laziness for most "WIP" pictures. I do have "Open Camera" installed just as a backup. On my PC and laptop (win and linux) I use GIMP for editing. (Also for making TH-cam thumbnails) Yes, it's a bit rough and hard to get into at first but once you have your worklflow cut out it's super easy. And it's free!
I'm trying to up my photog game, especially now that I'm creating content and trying to start a media empire, ok an instagram page and facebook along with the Twitch stream. Great video, good suggestions thanks Uncle A!
Thank you for this vid. i do sculptures and the big hassle is to take photos. I got a lightbox, but i am looking into getting some photo gear soon, so i can get a proper resolution. To answer your question. I got a 10 year old photoshop which serves me quite well when doing photo editing. I usually go RAW and then tweak it to make it look just a tiny bit better
This is the kind of photo advice that's been missing! Personally I do my mini shoots outdoors, using real terrain and natural light. There's also the question about lens focal length. Wide angle close up photo makes the object look bigger.
Great video! I've been refining my approach over the years but there are great tips in here. I'll definitely check out the android photo app. Honestly, photography is a very important and often overlooked aspect to the hobby and there isn't enough content out there about how to do it properly.
It genuinely never occurred to me to just download an alternate photography app for my phone. Seems obvious in hindsight. Thanks, Adam! (Also, great advice about using a timer to avoid the shaky cam effect.) I think my main issue with "setting up" to shoot photos is that often, I'm taking WIP shots of models. Which means I'm trying to take photos of stuff that are poster puddy'd to the little plastic cups I use as paint handles. I don't want to pop the whole batch of models off the handles just to show I've done a drybrush step. That's time I could be spending progressing the paint job further.
Great video, and yes, I'd like to see more on this topic. Your techniques remind me of the advice I've read from the late cartoonist, Will Eisner. I've made webcomics, memes, and TH-cam slide shows utilizing my figures in the past. I've had to stop for a bit due to health reasons for the past few years ( 2 years suffering from a degenerative lung disease, followed by a lung transplant nearly a year ago). As my strength and mobility continue to improve, I hope to get back in to miniature storytelling.
Excellent video. I’d love to see your photo shoot walkthrough some time. I like the value Affinity Photo offers for editing software (Mac). It’s good to know that I’m doing at least some stuff right when photographing my minis and terrain… ;)
I'm not sure why I've never thought to try a new picture taking app - the default one on my Pixel 6 hasn't impressed me much. Will be trying one of the recommended ones soon!
I'm actually a photographer that recently got interested in models and miniatures again Those are all really good tips. Something i've been playing with that i'm liking the look of is to use a 4-10 second exposure and just light paint the model. I'll move the light around the model and jut keep it longer where i want it brighter. I especially like to have lights above tne behind the model to create rim lights to separate the model from the backdrop. Editing wise, if i'm shooting on my phone, i'll shoot in RAW and let LR Mobile sync the photo to process on LR classic. While LR Mobile is really powerful, the larger screen and mouse make it easier.
Nor did I. It’s a pity they’re not listed in the description. Now I have to watch again and keep freezing the video every time a product or software is mentioned.
“Let me know in the comments if you’re interested in that kind of thing” : Here I am, in the comments, letting you know I’m interested.
I concur
Ditto!
Similarly.
I don't freaking know what we are talking about here (video just starts ATM) but I'm in too !
Yes, very interested
Yes, I'd love to see a photo scene setup / walkthrough
Just here to say, this is fantastic content on from A to Z. The wording, clarity, usefulness, positivity. Just great.
I enjoyed this brief run down of tips and tricks, so I would love a video that goes more in depth on this topic.

Great tips, Atom! Photography is my primary way of enjoying the hobby for the last few years and it's always cool to see how other people approach things.
Would absolutely love a video of a complete photo shoot, this video was immensely helpful and I’m definitely going to try these tips out
Really appreciate this advice. I always have trouble making my minis look good in pictures and got a ton of ideas for this for the background.
Lovely info about the background's distance! Never thought of it! Thanks Uncle Atom!
Great tips 😁👍
What you also could add, is to place the phone on the side, and use the surface as the stand. But, most phones have the camera on one side. So, when you turn the phone, so the camera is on the underside, you can make low angle shots too!
Great show again!
Thanks Uncle A.
A start to finish photo shoot would be awesome!
Yes to a full set up video :) Would be very helpful!
I’d love to see your step by step process.
Having done some moonlighting in the film industry, I got a chuckle out of the "appleboxes" you used to raise the height of the minis. :)
I bought those a few years ago, actually. They’re surprisingly useful. Thanks for watching!
@@tabletopminions Heck yes, they're useful. That's why on any movie set you'll find about a million of them in varying sizes!
I think this is the next phase of my painted minis, staging story shots. It might even help me to let go of some of these models/armies if I have some great photos to keep.
Complete start to finish photo shoot:YES PLEASE!!!!
Wonderfully helpful video! Always wanted to get into taking better pictures of my terrain and miniatures but never quite knew where to start. The suggestions for apps and lighting and even the screenshots of the Amazon items really make it easy to wrangle together what's needed to get there. Much appreciated! Great work.
I dig a start to finish guide; from set-up to to camera settings to processing.
It will be very cool to see videos of the stories of your minis. I have noticed you have very nice conversions!

Awesome video. Please make the video where you go through the whole process. Keep up the good work.
loved this, cheers! I can't wait to give some of these a go.
Seeing your full process would be excellent
This video was really really helpful on hints and tips for photographing your miniatures what ever size they may be. I’ll be rewatching this video to remember in the future.
I would definitely love another video walking through the whole process
A video about the photo shoot, especially talking through your thinking and your goals for the final photos as you adjust things, would be great! I'd watch that for sure.
I really like this video. Very good tip and tricks without spending a lot of money. Especially if your just getting started. A video of you going from start to finish setting thing up and maybe some basic editing on snapseed would be wonderful to see.
I loved this video!
So simple little things that will probably help me out alot! (shaky hands etc)

Yes do a full tutorial. I go back and watch your 1st taking pictures vid all the time. this will get added in as well

This has been really helpful as i struggle with pictures. I for one would love to see a "start to finish" video of your process. Thank you for all your helpful tips and tricks!
Yes to complete photoshoot + editing :)
This was very interesting! I'd love to see a full photo shoot like you suggested at the end.
This was a legit great, helpful video. Yes, totally do a full shoot on camera, that video would have some real value.
Photo editing used to be a much bigger deal in the early 00's . I can remember people getting banned from CMON for doing anything more then basic light adjustment in the image. Great video, thanks.
Start to finish would be super cool!!
Thanks for the tip about using a specific camera app. I never thought to look for that lol.
I'd be really keen to see your whole process

Very good recommendations. I really should look at using the timer as you suggest!
Very interesting. I love your tutorials. Yes I would love to see more photographing vids
I'd love to see a full start to finish set up and picture session.
I’d love to see a step by step photo shoot!
Great video. Taking snaps of my minis is something I always struggle with. This has given me some tips to go try out, thanks!

Thanks for this one. My miniature photography currently sucks. I'm going to try and step it up a bit.
Fantastic video! Subscribed!!!! I have a photography background, as well, but would love to see you work through a shoot start to finish!
I think it would be really cool to see a video of a full setup and shoot. I've always been unsatisfied with the photos I take of my mini's, and this video gave some great tips for me to try out. I'd totally be interested in seeing a step by step process. Make this video please.
Great Video, there is a lot of good ideas. Thanks so much for sharing 😍 I am totally interested in seeing you setup your personal photography setup 😉
I use topaz labs, it can be used as a plugin, or stand alone. very good video, thank you.
Didn't think of doing the lower camera angles, I'll that that asap. Thanks! (I'm still using CS2 for all my graphics work. Paid for in full and I've got my work flow set.)
Found this very enlightening. I will be making some changes to my little people photography. Once again thank you!

yes to a demo session
Totally up for a step by step video
I would love to see a more detailed tutorial/walkthrough of your "telling a story" process
Great tricks. Love your videos. Often learning something new 👏😁
Yes please to the photo shoot walkthrough video
start to finish, yes please!
Wauw that was really awesome! Just subscribed! ❤ And yes I'd like to see a more elaborate session from start to finish!

I don't shoot much small stuff, but I'll definitely try some of these out :)
Great video, yes on the 'how to' video to include software editing. Maybe the 2 separated into 2 videos.
I'm trying to up my photog game, especially now that I'm creating content and trying to start a media empire, ok an instagram page and facebook along with the Twitch stream. Great video, good suggestions thanks Uncle A!

Yes for the photo shoot
You rocked this one. Nice topic with great information.

Normaly I use MS Foto for Videos and fotos.
I'm not sure why I've never thought to try a new picture taking app - the default one on my Pixel 6 hasn't impressed me much. Will be trying one of the recommended ones soon!

@@tabletopminions I just started trying it out. It's a lot of fun and quite the challenge.
