I think the reason James Rolfe aka the AVGN was so angry at the game is because of all its cryptic puzzles. If this game was just a simple platformer like Super Mario Brothers or Adventure Island where you go through each stage and beating the boss and saving the damsel at the end, James would not have hated this game so much.
This game is so ahead of it's time,looking closely you can see a brutal influence on so many games year after year. That approach of gameplay is so intuitive,it's video game at it's finest,which means you need to feel the game while you're playing it. Those MASTERPIECES are for the few passionate enthusiasts out there,not for the regular players.

Manuals back in the day didn't tend to spoil the game, just give you the story, the controls, maybe a few screenshot snippets of the levels, and some artwork of enemies and main character. They also tended to show items found in the game, and some basic info of what they could do, but not tell you about moveable blocks.
This game is actually pretty good once you stick with it and realise that many games from this era were also cryptic - some even more-so than this, like Metroid. In my opinion this game is a hidden gem that doesn’t deserve the hate it gets (AND most of the people that hate this game haven’t played it, didn’t actually learn the game’s mechanics, or just watched the AVGN “review”.)
I'd never heard of this game until I heard another TH-camr mention it just today, but it has a certain nostalgic feel to it. It reminds me of a certain selection of different Japanese made (most were) NES games from the 80s--it just has a certain quirky feel, I can't really explain it. A quirky game you stumble upon in Blockbuster one day without really knowing what it is. Maybe if you were there, you understand what I mean.
Forgot to mention that this game was two years old when it was released in the U.S. Not to mention Hudson got rid of this sound engine that was used on a handful of their games from 1986 to 1987.

Wow, what a non climactic ending...maybe I need the manual, but I had no clue why you had to beat certain enemies, what was that repetition at the endgame killing the same guys but in different colored rooms lol And then it said episode 1?!?! There's an episode 2??? My mind...is blown...
Try as I might, I just can't get any enjoyment out of this game. It's simply too frustrating for all the wrong reasons. I think you're better off playing the *VASTLY* superior sequel for Super Famicom. But hey, if *_you_* like it, more power to you.

He's playing a character on the internet, don't let him have any say so over what you want to play, or try and play. The problem is, while some games he plays are really bad, this isn't one of them, nor is Castlevania II or Zelda II, and people tend to take his word as gospel (which they shouldn't). The game requires brains to play, and figure out it's obscurities, it's definitely not a mindless game.

I always liked this game. It reminds me a bit of Wonder Boy in Monster Land.
Yeah, it does have a similar open-ended sorta feel.
If only I knew what that damned single block could do sooner; because the manual forgot one important detail that would've helped me.

The _real_ second quest is shutting the game off and disposing it in any way that you choose.
Yeah, it's pretty brutal. The bosses take so much more off of your life and everything moves faster.
