This is one of the better recent Holyfield interviews, he's hilarious and spot on, IMO. Holyfield also going Rocky 4..."You know what you gotta do...NOW DO IT!" He also said that once he got to a certain point (mid 90's), he respected his trainers but at the end of the day, "I was the boss in there". I always think of that statement when the crop of deluded Tyson fans cry that if Tyson never left Rooney, he would've never lost a fight, or Robin Givens, yada yada. The greatest get tunnel vision no matter what's happening in their lives. Hardly anyone realizes that Holy's mama -whom he worshipped - died in a car wreck 7 months before he fought Tyson. His brother Willie was murdered by shotgun by his deranged brother in-law while he was training for the Holmes fight. Throw in all the stress that came with having all those kids and wives/girlfriends and child support - and he still came in to every fight in shape, focused, and with a never-say-die attitude.

I don't think saying holyfield and lewis fought a shot fighter who was a shadow of his former self is being delusional. It's hard not to notice how at some point in his career Tyson stopped moving his head, switching stances to create angles, and so on. I even find his post prison fights hard to watch.
There's a good video about it by Rainy Day Boxing called "was prime mike tyson unbeatable".

You cannot conflate the two different conversations into one. One conversation is about greatness, the other is about who'd win prime v prime. You can still have both conversations which are fun to have. But when you start conflating them, that's when you get confused.

@@huguesh294Tyson was in great shape for the Holyfield fights and nowhere near shot, coming fresh of 4 solid and focused training camps. The Lewis fight, different story. Mike was overweight, disinterested, and honestly I'm convinced was heavily medicated and had no biz being in the ring.

Exactly. Buster Douglas' mom died just three weeks before his fight with Tyson. Pacquiao grew up in poverty, slept on the streets, and had to start boxing professionally just so he could buy rice to feed himself and his mom.

I remember Bowe pissing Holyfield off with the "good big man vs. good little man" shit. Holyfield said once, "that's cool, but I ain't a good little man - I'm better!" Always bothers me that Holyfield fought that damn 3rd Bowe fight with hepatitis b/c he was boxing circles around Bowe until he got tired so quick - and still should've had that KO had he thrown 5 more damn punches. Even he said that was the one time he let himself down in the ring, b/c he worried about how he felt vs. what he had to do. But, I doubt he ever would've gotten that Tyson fight if King and Co. didn't think Holyfield was shot, so I guess it all worked out. Also the fan man - I truly believe he was on his way to getting Bowe out of there at that point. Holyfield was an absolute masterpiece that night. Bowe was a great fighter when he was young and in shape.

Man holyfield is hands down one of the greatest boxer of all times. Anybody have anything to say regarding holyfield is just plain miseducated. Holyfield is in younger DayZ in his prime was a straight warrior!let's not forget how he was the first and only boxer who put fear in even iron mike. Three times world heavyweight champion in muti weight classes, plus holyfield damn near dominated the whole 90s. Plus the ultimate battle and war against Tyson scoring victories in both fights the first one being a TKO. Holyfield holded the world champion belt!for almost 3 yrs if not 3 yrs remained the number one boxer in the world until lewis took it from him. Tyson was number one in his division in the late 80's to the early 90's only for the fact he ain't fight any hall of Fame boxers doing that era when he was champion, plus if u know history when ppl state so many times that holyfield wouldn't have beat tyson in Tyson prime, but let me say this,Tyson in his prime has ducked holyfield in Tyson prime,so Tyson must have known something then in helping to promote a fight against holyfield in the early 90's when Tyson was in his prime. Tyson has ducked two more major fights in his prime. The fight against Riddick Bowe & Micheal moorer. Two other hall of Fame heavy hitters of boxing doing the90's era. Riddick Bowe hands down was the number in his division for a while being world champion by whippin holyfield twice I may add!the only thing that still have me mad with Bowe In sabotaging his place as world champion by doing something u sportsman like by disposing of the world belt in trash. Missing a perfect opportunity of fighting the man who beat him in the Olympics,he missed the chance of capturing history that may have been the best fight ever. But all and all Lennox Lewis became the top number one boxer and champ by the end of the 90,s

Evander had a lot of respect for Bowe. He fought him in his prime 3 times and also fought Tyson and Lennox twice. He had a unique vantage point to say the least. Sounds like he viewed prime Bowe as the best of the three he fought. I think prime Bowe would beat pre-Manny Stewart Lewis and also would wear Tyson down. Tyson struggled against tall, boxer punches that has good chins and weren’t afraid of him. Bowe had a really good chin and rivaled Holyfield in his refusal to quit in the ring. I think Bowe would probably TKO Mike in the later rounds if they fought around 1995. However after the the Golota fight Bowe was shot. However from 92-95, Bowe - along with Holyfield - was the best in the division. Holyfield was basically implying Bowe was the best he fought as a HW while Bowe was still in his prime.

On a side note Evander fought Bowe, Tyson and Lewis a combined total of seven times with a record against them of 3-3-1 ( really 3-4 given he really lose the 1st fight against Lewis ) still not bad against the 'cream of the crop' in the 1990's.

    • @lawrencescott1048

And at the time Bowe WAS the best that Holyfield fought when those fights happened, what doesn't get mentioned too often is that Holyfield was well pass his prime before he fought Lennox and Tyson was pretty much totally gone before Lewis got him.
Not trying to take anything away from Lennox but he did as EH said got better with time under Manny Stewart while everyone else around him aged, but it is what it is.

Holyfield didn't look as sharp against Bean. His head and heart weren't in the first Lewis fight, but he fought a good effort in Holyfielf-Lewis II - and I thought he beat Lewis in the second fight. Prime Holyfield v Prime Lewis I believe would be a competitive match, but Holyfield was so much quicker in his prime. He was around the same height and build of the two guys who knocked Lewis out - McCall and Rahman. I think Lewis would have come in, in top form against Prime Holyfield and fought a careful fight. I just think that Holyfield would have eventually clipped him with that constant pressure and fast hands, and gotten either a KO or TKO. @@lawrencescott1048

Interesting. If Lewis had been Bowe's opponent in 1992, rather than Holyfield, I like Bowe to win. Bowe was at his peak. He fought a great fight, giving a peak Holyfield all he could handle. Bowe was too well-rounded and too strong for Lewis at that time.
But, you take Lewis in 1995, he probably KO's Bowe at that time.

So correct about Manny Steward turning Lewis into a great fighter.. I really believe that pre-Manny Lewis gets startched by Tyson, Hokyfield, and Bowe. He'd have a punchers chance but he fought exactly like Holy described here. Manny taught him how to best use his size and reach to control distance, avoid big shots, and exhaust guys using his weight, which was much heavier post-Steward too.

@@greenfields1221 "Bowe also got totally outboxed twice by that big lump Golota, and relied on Golota getting himself DQ to save him from loss" If you actually watched the fight, which you very clearly didn't, you would've seen that Golota was giving Bowe his best shots and Bowe was not going down, add to that Bowe was scoring punches on Golota that were hurting and frustrating him. Golota didn't just DQ himself with nut shots, he got an edge because he was throwing nut shots at any moment's notice throughout the fight. And this is not even Bowe in his prime. Bowe knocked Golota down in the 4th round in the second fight. If it was a fair fight, I don't see Golota making it through all the rounds without being knocked out.

Lennox was from a different era from all but Bowe, because he was such a late bloomer. He was scared of young Bowe - and Bowe was afraid of Lewis, it's a shame but the truth. True champions don't think of the risk of fighting the other best fighter out there, they demand it and screw promoters or sanctioning bodies. The people know who their heavyweight champ is, and historical this is one of the top 10 fights that should've happened and the only one that didn't. It may have been a snore cause styles make fights, but it turned out to be the beginning of the end of the heavyweight division.
If you take them all when they were still undefeated Tyson, Bowe, Holifield and then Lewis. I judge matches with fighters from different era's in trilogies - who would win a 2 out of 3 series.
