I am a Canadian living at my house in Croatia as much as possible (which means countless travel possibilities!)...and concur with your tips, especially booking direct and asking the host for a deal for extended stays. Like you, in cities such as Rome we stay in Trastevere or Monti.
To those contemplating travel to Europe, DO IT! There is no education like travel.

Summer travel, need room with AC. Some Airbnbs and cheap motels hotels have no AC.

I agree with all your points (contrary to packing mistakes video), as someone who have travelled on budget and always spent extensive time picking a good stay.
Location, the neighborhood in general, the surroundings, the host and reviews, approximity to a metro station, and the time it might take to reach airport (or train station) which is important if say you have an 8am flight.
Problem with Airbnb there might be a lot of fake listings or too picky and late replies, which has wasted a lot of my time recently.

Just a few years ago, it was cheaper to book thru an app like Booking’s rather than go direct to the hotel. Often found myself sitting in the actual hotel lobby while paying online. Now it’s reversed. Online can be 20% more.

No more Airbnb’s for me!!!! I’ve had bad experiences with them!! I’d rather spend the extra money and stay in a hotel. I’m on vacation. Not gonna cook nor make my bed!!!!

To this day I don’t understand why anyone would pick an Airbnb over a hotel. They’re less convenient and usually cost the same as a hotel. In addition to that, you’re just ruining the real estate business in that place. Increasing prices for locals.
