- Albert and Rob talk about meeting each other in high school, becoming fast friends, making their new documentary Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, getting lost in the hills of Malibu as teenagers, Rob’s father Carl Reiner saying Albert “was the funniest person he knew” and Albert plays an unprompted guessing game with Jimmy to prove that there is psychic energy in the air.

Two of the greatest friendships: Reiner and Brooks (Carl and Mel), and Reiner and Brooks (Rob and Albert). Hope we all have a chance to find our Reiner or Brooks!
No matter who these two guys are, a 50+ years, lifelong friendship is priceless! Very lucky!👍❤️
I’m proud to say I’m still friends with my college roommate (1975), an old boyfriend (1976), and a friend I used to work for (1976). When you’re lucky enough to find good people you click with, never stop working to keep the friendship alive!
I have that same bond with my best friend. We met and became friends in Jr. High when we were 13, and have been best friends since 1989. I moved away & have lived in multiple states whereas he never left, but we always kept in touch and we're still best friends today. In fact, he's visiting and staying with me for a week later this year. We don't get to see each other very often due to distance, but when one of us travels, it's like school was yesterday.
I love Al's honesty when he remarked about wanting to be remembered for more than Finding Nemo! Brilliant comedian!
Helps that his name is Albert Einstein too. 😂😂😂
When Albert mentioned he lost his father when he was 11 it reminded me of that part of Defending Your Life (1991) when after he dies he finds himself in the afterlife and attending a night club comedy show. The lousy stand up comedian that's trying to entertain the sparse crowd asks Brooks' character how he died and he upstages the comedian answering "On stage, like you" to instant laughs. Minutes later the character Meryl Streep plays asks Brooks to leave the room together and he jokes telling her "I can't, he's my father". The fact is that Harry Einstein did die on stage in a theater during a tribute to Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in 1958. He suffered a massive heart attack at age 54 while performing a comic skit and initially everybody thought that when he collapsed it was part of his act. Milton Berle instantly recognized it was not and while assisting him he asked if there was a doctor in the house but the public thought it was another joke. The stagehands dropped the curtain and a physician tried to revive Einstein massaging his heart to no avail.
Thanks so much for that information. It's quite a poignant story.😊
What a story, can’t make it up!
Whoa! Didn’t know that. Thanks for sharing. ❤
albert brooks defending my life now playing
Are you sure it was a "massive" heart attack
Rob has directed so many of my favourite movies.
Albert Brooks, a true legend.
@vizzini589 You keep saying that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
@@robertdavezac Huh?
@@vizzini589 Your name.
@@robertdavezac AHH, of course. Well done.
Watch the documentary and restore your faith in humanity. Simply awesome.
It was great. Two incredibly interesting people.
Defending Your Life (1991) is a movie I never tire of re-watch, such a brilliant story, one of the funniest films ever, and Meryl Streep is so lovely 😍 !!!
One of my favorites, and I still cry at the end
A masterpiece! Funny and very creative.
One of my favorites as well.
I’ve never seen it. I keep forgetting to look for it on cable. What’s it about?
@@cherylmcnutt9905 Cheryl, it is a comedy about a guy who dies in an accident the day he turns 40, then goes to a temporary afterlife in which his life will be judged (hence the title) and while that is happening he also meets the love of his life. The question is, will they have a future... together ??? 🤔
Omg. This reminded me of the Johnny Carson interviews. When Johnny interviews comedy legends.
They just have fun telling stories and doing bits. Just unhinged.
Thanks for the chuckles. Great interview and insight into a special friendship.
THAT may be what I will best remember Albert Brooks for, actually. 😂
Simply the best! They both come from talented families, Albert's brother was Bob Einstein, of Curb Your Enthusiasm, Super Dave, and Smothers Brothers fame.
I never knew Bob was Albert’s brother!!!
RIP "Super Dave Osborne" a true avenger of pain! 🤣
It was a one-off comment under his breath, but Jimmy spontaneously coming up with a comedy duo name for Melvin Kaminsky and Albert Einstein as "the Babbling Brooks" was inspired.
Good catch. Jimmy always does that. He comes up with the funniest stuff under his breath and it gets buried in the applause from the previous joke. LOL
I thought he said “battling.”
LEGENDS!! Love them!! 💜💜
Wow, another Reiner-Brooks duo. Carl Reiner (RIP) and Mel Brooks were besties, and it looks like these guys are, too.
We love albert brooks and rob reiner
Rob Reiner is surely one of the most underrated directors ever.
Princess Bride!
This is SPINAL TAP!
Underrated??!! On what grounds?
@@oldtimer7635 It's TH-cam. Either someone is underrated or a "national treasure." lol
@@crashburn3292 True. ; )
That All of AB's bits were done without rehearsal tryouts on stage before an audience is more then amazing, a true genius!
The cow knows the area!
love this due since i was a kid.... love the "muse" Albert brooks in universal back loot and Hollywood
OMG I feel old now - these two were who we watched when I was a teen.
FYI Albert Brooks is the voice behind one of the greatest one time Simpsons characters: HANK SCORPIO!
78 here. I grew up cracking up with Sid Caesar on TV written by and acted with Carl Reiner.
nice job being able to use a computer, man!
Albert, I have lo Ed your work since the first day I saw your act. So gifted. All your movies are brilliant.
I once worked with someone who went to high school with them both. Another member of their class was Richard Dreyfuss (she called him Rick). She said all three of them were hilarious.
Albert is genius. I’ve never heard anyone start a joke with a security question. Favorite teacher.
Obscure reference. Nice!
when i saw "reiner and brooks" i immediately thought it was carl reiner and mel brooks
11:48 Babbling Brooks getting thrown out like it's not the most genius ad lib ever
Hilarious choice of the cigarette bit from Brooks. Considering Reiner's influence on censorship and cigarette use in film.
The Movie " Defending your Life" was the first time I ever saw that I wasn't the only person who believed, spiritually, what I believed
When Rob Reiner was producing Stand By Me, he gave me a hat with Nickel Production. ❤
I was managing the shop where the steam locomotive Baldwin #19.
'babbiling brooks' Kimmel inching closer to that GOAT status
You're a star, keep shining bright!
He is a plant. Open your mind
It Is a fabulous documentary and these guys are such fun to watch. As an Albert Brooks fan, there are some great bits to discover.
Albert Brooks looks as I remember but I almost didn't recognize Meathead, lol !!!
He is so much more than that character though.
The only thing that could have made this better was if Super Dave was there too.
I absolutely looove Super Dave Osborne. What a dare devil!
_MOTHER iS THE BEST DOCUMENTARY, NUTTY THAT iT CAME OUT THE SAME YEAR AS MY OTHER ONE DiD_ ‼️
2 legends of Hollywood 😳🫡🫡
Great comedic voices, but both are also great directors.
@12:43 Brooks: "If you're over thirty you can't find anything on MAX!" See? The essence of comedy is that it's about the absurdity of something that's TRUE! 😆
The cow must've thought he said Ventura barn.
Love your style, keep rocking it!
Why are we only hearing this now?
What a great story it must be.
I love them!! ❤😊🎉
True legends truly .
Love these guys and Carl Reiner. 😊
2 LEGENDS!!!! ❤
Comedy gold..... of a kind that is sadly near extinction! The documentary is mind-blowingly brilliant!
I love Rob Reiner. I wish he would visit more often 🥰
Used to love Albert Brooks. Defending Your Life and Mother are a couple of my favorite movies.
This was a great show. Love those two together. ❤
I love Albert Brooks..and I guess he's considered underrated as his name never comes up they list the greats.. His movies are genius..and being pride month, I always had a massive crush on him..😂
OK. A glass of warm milk before bed was... a bad idea tonight.
MORTON AND HAYES!!!!! WATCH IT!!! ITS PURE COMEDY GOLD!!!!!
I'm Prince Valiant!!! Who are you? - Streep
Dinner. - Brooks
I’d rather hang out with these old guys over young A list superstars any day. Just to eat brunch with them! For hours!!!!! ❤❤❤❤
Love these men. I loved the film - but have one slight criticism. I could watch these two discuss their lives, their thoughts on anything and everything, the history of their friendship for hours. I did not need to hear other comedians tell me how important Albert Brooks was to comedy. We know. We're seeing it. I wanted more of these two.
Truly impactful legends omg. I adore them both so much 😊
“The Ruth Bit” was a revelation.
I discovered Albert's genius when I came across Mother playing on HBO back in the 90's, it's been my favorite comedy ever since. RIP Debbie Reynolds.
I loved Albert Brooks in "Lost in America". And Rob Reiner in All in the Family and the movies he directed also.
I feel old and those two guys are a bit younger than me.
Al's early SNL shorts are such genius
Whenever I hear Albert's voice, I can't help but hear Nemo's dad. ❤
Lost in America was one of the greatest movies ever made.
I'm glad Albert wasn't in 'When Harry Met Sally' as Meg Ryan was the better choice.
😂
Al! Rob! Bubbalas. Do a damn sitcom together. It's a moral imperative.
A frienship of 50 years? Inconceivable.
"The Great Kosher Delis of the U.S.A." I am BEGGING. Just those two noshing.
Brilliant interviews 💙💙💙🤣
One of my favorite comedies is 'The In-Laws'....Albert Brooks is hilarious...I actually believe the remake is funnier than the original with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin...and that is saying a lot.
Legendary
LMAO 😍😂🤣😂🤣 love these guys!,
Rob Reiner is so rich besides his acting career he went on to start Castle Rock which had so many big movie hits that in the end they dissolved the company and everyone left millionaires.
"Poor Danny!",,,, Say it!!
Been watching these guys my whole life AND I'M OLD 👍
Oh my god, Albert Brooks’ ventriloquist bit is better than Steve Martin!!!
Lol putting maple ridge on the map in a nice way
Wasn't that a different clip?
Very Very iconic
This is great... Thank you.
Turn the ventriloquist up to eleven.
Peace on earth.
Can’t still believe real professional still exists, thanks for pointing this out
❤❤❤
When i saw the thumbnail, "Reiner and Brooks", i thought they meant Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks, and i was soooo confused.
❤❤
❤😂❤
Hey kimmel and bits
Albert actually saved my job. Short story.
I have seen this interview before.
Albert Brooks & Rob Reiner on Meeting in High School, Making Each Other Laugh & New Documentary
It was to the barn...
The cow joke is a meme.
Man Albert kills as usual. Miss his twitter account.
All this time I thot Albert was the son of Mel Brooks!?! So much hilarity all around!!😅
Mel's son is the writer and sometime talking head Max Brooks.
Brooks is Vaudeville status.... amazing. Makes me miss being on stage.
Somebody needs to make a movie where teenage Albert walks up to teenage Rob & says he knows Carl Reiner but, unlike in real life, Rob never tells him that he's Carl Reiner's son. 90 minutes of mistaken identity & hilarity ensue.
Albert Einstein’s brother was Bob Einstein, a famed comedian and writer in his own right, most notably for a certain stuntman character. 😉
I hated that comedy series because it was essentially one joke. Then I realized that Bob was just funnier being himself.
@@JohnGeorgeHill Both of those series (he played him primarily on two) made Einstein more famous and popular than anything else he did. Some liked them, some didn’t.
@@Coolestmovies Yes, and they made 7 Police Academy movies, so popularity does not equal greatness. I laughed my head off at a joke Bob told on Comedians and Cars Getting Coffee. I can't think what might have been, but I do think he was happy about his second chance on Curb Your Enthusiasm.
@@JohnGeorgeHill He was great on Curb, but there was never really a “might have been” with him. That exact same deadpan humour was very much his thing, and it was evident in virtually all of the Super Dave bits that everyone hates (including when he played him on talk shows), as well as when he played ‘producer Bob’ on Bizarre, and his character on the otherwise weak Anger Management series, plus his handful of appearances on Arrested Development, and even the old variety sketch shows he did with Sonny & Cher, Pat Paulsen, and the Smothers Brothers (good clips of him on all three of those shows are hopefully still on YT). In fact, he was literally a one-trick pony but he did it well no matter what character he played. His go-to mannerisms and ticks virtually never changed. Even when he appeared in interviews as himself he still did the deadpan shtick sometimes, purely for laughs, and he got them. To me, his “greatness” was just doing the same routine for decades only with different costumes. And likewise I never said originally that Super Dave was “great”, only that it was his most popular and successful character (why DO folks always assume someone simply noting that a character or movie or song or book is popular and/or financially successful automatically equate that work with greatness? 🙄😉). Oh well, he’s gone anyway, but he had a good run doing the same routine over and over again. The man knew what people expected of him, that’s for sure, and he delivered. 🙂

On my phone I turned it up to 11,,,,,hee hee! 😎
Both wonderful story tellers, each in their own distinctive style. Love em. And it’s pride month. 👍🤪🏳️🌈
As a great man once said...may the shwartz be with you....
It's native American history month in Canada, with a pride weekend in Canada. As fas as i know...I'm 60% sure about that.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😁😁😁😁😁😁 how s your dear funny son 😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤ dear jim kim ❤❤❤ thanks all
I didn't know " Meat Head " was still alive.
