5:20 Joel was going to sleep, but he realized Ellie was scared after he mentioned the danger people pose, so he stayed up all night guarding her. That's also why he's sucking down so much coffee the next morning.
When you realize Joel was just trying to save Ellie's innocence and that's why he didn't want her having a gun. There's absolutely zero tactical advantage to having someone with you that can't defend herself. Joel knew this. But he didn't want her to be forced to take a life, thus him not wanting her to have a gun.
The point of this episode was to show Joel and Ellie's bond growing closer, to set up how things are in this city, and to set up the story of Henry and Sam. I loved Ellie's puns in the game, and I love it even more in the show. FYI - In the many interviews with Pedro and Bella you learn that the way they were after the diarrhea joke is how they were most of the time on the set. One of them, usually Bella, would get the other laughing and the director would have to pause the shoot for a bit until they could get their giggles under control. They do it a lot in the interviews too.
I think Ellie's obsessed with guns because in this post-apocalypse world, guns mean power, protection, and survival. Ellie grew up in a QZ, and the people with guns were the military, the rebels, and the criminals - basically all the people who actually had some level of control over their lives. So for Ellie, having a gun means taking charge of her own life and her own story, and she's excited by the idea of not just being a helpless sidekick depending of someone else for safety.
Ellie is familiar with guns but... What i think is happening is she's rediscovering the point of them..if that makes sense? Thats how it seems.. like shes numb reverting back..i dunno... She probably hates guns now..in the tv show anyway.. honestly dunno cause av played the game and watched the show and she knew guns like wow... Not so much on screen.. i like it.. it's more grounded... She knows what they can do though.. i think.. 🤔

I'm sure Ellie always imagined her first shot would be at an Infected, or maybe a psycho raider with zero humanity. Instead, she shoots a teenager only a few years older than herself, and she has to watch him cry and beg for mercy.
The actor playing Perry (Kathleen’s right hand) is Jeffrey Pierce, the original actor who played Tommy in the games. The actors who played Joel (Troy Baker) and Ellie (Ashley Johnson) also have cameos throughout the series. And, of course, Merle Dandritch (Marlene) plays the same character in the games and show!

Haylo and Kiss: This was a slow episode. Episode 5: Hold my coffee. Episode 4&5 is like part one and two. This is the only time in the season in which their are two episodes that are like that. I really enjoyed the bonding between Ellie and Joel and I think it’s a big reason why they slowed things down here, as well as setting up all the craziness that is episode 5. Really enjoying your reactions. Y’all are very funny. I’m looking forward to your reaction to episode 5.
Been loving the reactions to this show!! But I’d love to hear more discussion from you 2 after the episodes, like even just 5ish mins of just discussing the episode together and like moments you liked and maybe theories of what happens next etc. Which I feel like if my biggest criticism is that I just want to see and hear from you both you are certainly doing something right!

The road trip reminded me of road trips with my dad! I love this episode because we get a lot of sweet relationship development between Joel and Ellie. I think Joel is even more resistant to care for Ellie because she’s a mirror of himself: she’s more like him than Sarah was in some ways, and that scares him even more. But again-here, we can see that Joel was not only a dad before, but he was a girl dad…you can just tell and it’s so sweet! Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey’s chemistry is electric!
Ellie has chipped away at Joel's armor. Joel can also benefit from relaxing a bit. You deserved a bit of humor and vulnerability after watching what Bill and Frank went through. Catch you next week for more! Take care, H&K!!

I'm a little late this time. It may be a slower (but still great!) episode, but it's laying down important groundwork. Joel has two competing ideologies. His wanting to keep his emotions buried to avoid the hurt, and his powerful, natural, instincts as a father that refuse to stay buried. The latter gained more ground here, he stayed up all night in the woods standing watch because she was nervous about being found. He felt responsible for her having to cause harm like that, because its his job to protect her, and finally at the top of the building when he lets himself truly laugh with her. That laugh was probably the first time he really laughed like that in 20 years. Letting go of a lot of that tension he carries at all times let him have a deeper sleep, which meant he didn't notice he turned, covering his good ear, which let them sneak up on him. The emotional dam is cracking, and he will have to deal with a flood before he truly finds who he was.

As much as I hate Kathleen, she has half a point when shes says "It has to stop NOW, you mean. Now that you're in the cell." He didn't have that attitude when it was other people being tortured. On the flip side, tradition is the most common excuse for continuing to perpetuate harm when you know you're doing so.
Kathleen made this ep... She literally made an entire game section feel more real... I didn't expect that tbh... But made that section of the game feel real.. kinda lowkey wish I didn't kill every cnt on my playyhrough 😂😂😂😂😂 i love this show for actually making it real..its brilliant
I think Ellie’s obsession with guns comes from a place of wanting power. She’s had very little control over her life, and having a gun gives her a little bit of control (as well as safety). It’s interesting that this episode she first fantasizes about using a gun in a childlike way, but after she HAS to use the gun she freezes up and feels the real consequences of hurting people with guns.
I honestly didn't like blonde when I started. However she grows on you slowly. Now I feel bad for other sister because I liked her more in first episode.
