    Love how light hearted he is in this video as compared to the serious subject matter of the book. However, I have to say that there are many, many well-written funny moments in the book. The Pulitzer was well deserved.

      I have many Vietnamese friends and they are some of the best people I know. I hope you find a good home in the US. Most Americans try to forget the war, the horrible loss of life for many is a painful memory. We must live for the future and try to live in peace and harmony. Those that came before us would want that after the terrible things they witnessed. God bless and best wishes to you.

    • @ThinhTran-wy6vc
      @ThinhTran-wy6vc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      They like Trump because of bitterness towards the past. Trump to them is anti-communism and these Vietnamese overseas, especially those older ones that were once part of South Vietnam's government (VNCH), they hate communism more than anything else.

    • @pluu6110
      @pluu6110 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it's mostly older Vietnamese that like Trump and the GOP. (Kinda like Cuban American in FL) They hate the Communist so bad that they are blinded by everything that Trump or the GOP stand for. The irony is that they escaped Communism and authoritarian and yet worship the very thing that they claim to loathe! But the younger generation of VN are more Democratic leaning so I’m hopeful.

    "Traumatic Refugee Experience" oh god give it a break! he and his family got out in 75 which is a lot better than most and he was young enough to not remember anything bad. Most vn refugees had to face pirates, weather, floating around the sea for days without food/water, actually living in refugee camps (in thailand, phillipines, indonesia, hk, malaysia) and fighting for food and water. he had it made and his family got a head start before other vn refugees. And than there were minors without parents in the camps that had to fight for themselves. I was there in songkhla, sieu kieu, phanat nikhom refugee camps as a minor so i can say these things.

    • @LindaTran88
      @LindaTran88 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      It's not a competition. Being a refugee does have its own set of traumatic experiences, whether you leave by boat or plane, or at a young age or older.... Just leaving your own home country to seek refuge and resettle into another country is already traumatic.

    • @damiann4734
      @damiann4734 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you listened to a more detailed interview with Viet Thanh, he never exaggerated his experience as a refugee. I think the title of this episode is misleading. Though, traumatic experience is different from each individual, for a 4 year old child would be removed from your parents and placed into a stranger's home. You have to consider that he did not speak any English at that time.
