  • Apparently this brief clip is all that survives of Theodore's pilot for "Dr. Dismal's Day-Care Center"...

From cradle to crypt, from womb to tomb, we stagger hopelessly around in endless, muddled, dark clouds, always circling the airport but never landing, because there are no runways and there are no airports and yet we are forced to flap our arms like human airplanes and eat bags of stale nuts...

I used to think he was a sort of half-funny shock comic, but in revisiting Theodore with a new perspective, I find him brilliant when you listen to him as completely serious. And that is genius.

I saw BROTHER THEODORE in the mid 80s'. He was frightening, masterful, preposterous according to the Village Voice and I concur. Great..

Next time you're in a book store, take a peek at the classic 1845 German "children's" book Struwwelpeter (you can also find it online as a PDF). Theodore's grave warnings to children were very similar to the tales in that book of what befalls a child who does not behave. It wouldn't surprise me if he himself was read those tales as a child and thought they would make for a great offbeat "comedy" show. They are grisly as can be.

Looking for the madness behind the voice of Gollum that was Brother Theodore. This guy was a nut! Love it! Thanks for putting this up.

As someone who was brought up on Rankin Bass' Hobbit, Return of the King and the Last Unicorn, Brother Theodore was a kid show host as far as I'm concerned.

Had Theo been on Seinfeld in a recurring role as der soup Nazi, I would buy the Seinfeld dvd set. But sadly, we were deprived that wonderful possibility. Theo would have enjoyed it. I saw his live show at 13 Street Theater many times in the mid 1980's in the east Village. Those who never saw him in person don't know what they missed. Lucky for the audiences on the Letterman show, they loved Theo.Dark deeds are done in dark shadows, my friends. I feel doom & gloom is in the air.

He rose from the ashes of the 3rd Reich. He came from a very wealthy publishing family and after being whisked away to a concentration camp. He had a gun to his head where he was forced to sign over the family business to Uncle Adolph and pals. He was also a notorious chess hustler. Whilst a janitor and Stanford U. he challenged 30 of the faculty to simultaneous matches and won. He was no dummy.

Thanks to you and "spookylorre" (what a screen name!). I'll need to check out "That's Adequate". Pity that television producers didn't have enough outside the box thinking to realize what a jewel they had in Theodore. I think if someone could have come up with the right sort of premise for a sitcom, he'd have been great, and I even mean a series where the show would revolve around his weird old self. It's one of those things, which, had it been done right, could have been a cult classic!

Brother Theodore would have made a great TV host for a Saturday night Chiller Theater. The guy used on Seinfeld for the soup Nazi role was not really funny or comical. Theodore would have been so great in the role, that I am certain he would have been asked by the show's producer to be a regular character. Theo the Soup Nazi could have made home deliveries of soup & bread to Seinfeld's apartment, he could have also been selling soup door to door or outdoors from a hotdog cart. Elaine's lover?

Br. Theo would have ruled as late night horror host, though they'd have needed a disclaimer like: Viewer Advisory: Brother Theodore's Dungeon of Ghouls is not recommended viewing for children, seniors or those with nervous disorders. It may cause a lapse of sanity. This channel bears no responsibility for what may occur to those who fail to heed this warning. He'd have been a great Soup Nazi (Elaine's BF--LOL) or even a new character. Definitely undervalued.

I disagree: When I was a child I would have loved to see Brother Theodore as a late night horror movie host. I feel sure almost all boys would have liked him and a lot of girls too. But that was back when we kids were tougher and more independent than kids of today. We didn't live in a protective bubble, not allowed to get normal childhood scrapes and bruises and not allowed to go outside to play and learn how to be self sufficient. Worst of all, kids today are not allowed to fail. Everybody has to be a winner. That's not how life works. Anyway Brother Theodore was so far ahead of his time. I was a fan since way back in the 1960s.

Really, really great idea...so great, in fact, that I've elected to reply rather than click "like", which I'd have to do 100 times! Based on this clip, I'd like to have seen Bro. Theodore have his own kiddie show, sitcom or horror show host, ala the Cryptkeeper.
(And to "Once-bitten..." thanks for the awesome upload. What movie or show did this come from?)
