ARIA was the 4950th at WPAFB . Dad was station in Patrick AFB in Cocoa Beach , Fla and then transferred to Ohio in 78/79 and retired in 88 and still live here. The restoratioon hanger is on the far side of this area . We lived in Page Manor and watched the building of whe United States Air & Space Museum into what it is now The Air Force Museum. All the rockets that used to be out in front are scattered thru out the US now.
The C-17 on display was the one and only Pre-Production aircraft called T-1. It never joined the fleet as a regular transport aircraft, it was used for testing only. It spent its whole life at Edwards. The KC-10 arrived at the Museum in 2024
Thanks for this! Visiting this museum is definitely on my list! Incredible aircraft that have and continue to keep the Free world safe! Particularly love the KC-10A!
Tell me when ya go. I live 35 miles from WPAFB/NMUSAF. Yes, I am lucky and basically from opening day until today, I have been up there about 8 times a month. I love that place.
@ Brought my family there in March …….wonderful museum (was a bit chilly outside, skipped these wonderful planes and spent day inside). Glad you created this…..will be something we see on our next visit.
I retired from USAF in 1978 as an inflight refueling specialist (Boom Operator). I remember walking through this series of aircraft at Boing as they were being built. A long time ago now. This aircraft and many others tankers took me safely around the world many times. I feel honored now to be able to flown in it. So many countries. When I tell stories of my career I am not so sure what story is 100% accurate or which stores have been embellished some what. Just good memories.
@@jimford795 Thank you for your service!! Im sure you have many more stories to tell. I was just thinking when filming this “how nerve wracking it must have been for the boom operator to focus while staring down that boom while at 35,000 ft and maintain contact”! Hopefully these old planes last awhile and continue to tell the public what you guys did.
Thank you for the walk around, and agreed thoroughly, that all Service men and women need to be thanked for their Service, and the sacrifices they make in that service...so Thank You to all serving your countries...no matter where you may be!!! Cheers from Sydney Aus!!!! 🍻🍻🍻🍻
@@tippo5341 well said! The Untied States doesn’t feel very united these days, but I think we can all agree (worldwide) that the military should be commended and revered! Thanks for the kind comments 🇺🇸🇦🇺
If I may, that flyover was the National Airborne Operations Center aircraft that is "stationed" at WP for emergency operations and backup to AF One, if it is needed. I see the Aircrews and their van transports daily on Kittyhawk as they go about their personal shopping, AS A GROUP, and can respond very quickly to the staging area.
Thanks for the info. Im just a civilian AvGeek that loves seeing out of the ordinary aircraft, and that definitely caught my attention. Really appreciate your insight about what that flight was!
Back in the day they used to have a lot more planes outside before they built the other two buildings. They used to have a lot of stuff at what they used to call the annex which you would get in a bus and go up on top of the hill where they actually restored the aircraft. And a lot of them that are out there are just too big to be put into a hanger, but at least they have them out so if you wish to look at them you're more than welcome to walk to them and learn some history. That's like the XB-70 that's inside, it used to sit outside for years actually where the IMAX is now. So hopefully someday these beautiful planes will have a home inside it just takes money and time. And as for the Doomsday plane that flew over several times this year actually flying over my house to the base. Probably just getting upgraded with some new electronics from Wright-Patterson.
I remember going to the annex to see the JFK Air Force one and the experimental aircraft. It’s nice that they can finally put everything on one lot under one roof. It’s my understanding that the latest building was constructed in anticipation for receiving one of the current Air Force ones when they are retired. I imagine that will take up what’s left of the space, and the poor war birds out on the runway in the parking lot will just have to remain. Its still better than the scrapyard in the desert. 🇺🇸
Addendum: The C-17 AC used in Transformers was requested by my son, who was Wing Info Officer at Edwards all those years ago, to be used in Transformers movies. He was a mega fan and got a small 15 second scene in the Tower during a "scramble scene". He had a ball coordinating all the aircraft required for the movies for a number of years. Star Wars, Transformers, and Star Trek were some of his favorites. I visited him at Edwards during the time and got a small tour. As a side light, the 4950th Test Wing was at WPAFB Ohio during my assignment in the eighties, then moved to Edwards when the C-5 wing (445th Group) came there. Then the C-5s left and the present 445th C-17 wing came in, still there. Love seeing them fly above my home almost everyday. You should visit the AF Museum and see the "Hanoi Taxi" also on display, the POW signatures are still on the foreward bulkhead adjacent to the flight deck. The National Museum of the United States Air Force is MASSIVE display (4 large hangers) and will take more than a day to walk it and experience the history. 😍❤🤍💙💯🙏

The Hawaii ANG KC135 reminded me of the KC135 from the Pennsylvania ANG that landed at LAX 5 years ago on what the crew called a training mission. It was great to see a 707 type still airworthy after 60 years.
Yeah, I don’t know if there are any commercial 707’s still flying? Last I heard, an Iranian airline still had one but that was years ago

@@FortWayneFellow I don't believe there are any 707's still airworthy. The KC135 that landed at LAX 5 years ago was built in 1958 and the crew was saying that the airplane was due to be retired in the not too distant future so I would bet if it hasn't been scrapped, it is parked in one of the military aircraft boneyards, maybe at Davis Monthan in Tucson. I now live in Kingman, AZ and we have many aircraft in storage or waiting to be scrapped, but they are mostly later model airliners. I have seen a couple of 707's out at the airport along with a DC4 and a C123 sitting beside a hangar.
Just found your posts. USAF & Indiana Air National Guard Vet. Fort Wayne home now for last 45 years. OHIO born. WP (USAF Museum) many visits. Thanks for your posts.👍👍👍
I started my flying at age 3 in my dad’s lap in a super cub that was 54 years ago. Ended up in the Navy in the 80’s and 90’s. I hate to say those Air Force paint jobs are still in better condition than the carrier based aircraft. All those aircraft could be sent to Oklahoma to be rebuilt and fly again. It’s not easy but very very possible. But… the chances are slim. Although a major war has a way of making the impossible possible.

I really enjoyed the “Back Lot” video tour-it was a great watch! However, I think it would have been even more enjoyable if the background music were turned down or removed, as it was loud and distracting.
That would be nice. I have a feeling that when the current 747 Air Force One’s get retired, one of them will move into the latest hangar and more aircraft will be displaced out to the “yard” with these aircraft. Still better than being in the boneyard I guess?

NOT forgotten! Just no room in the hangers/building the museum has right now. They have plans for building more. Forgotten... NOT!
Just a title for the video.

I just checked these out today! Really happy they finally brought the KC-10 over here, an absolute beast of an aircraft.
We got one delivered to our airfield museum last year and it's looking horrible. It need a paint refresh badly.
Yeah, the elements do a number on aircraft outside! Static displays still need alot of love just parked. lol
These are the aircraft I photographed way back in the 90s at RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk UK 🇬🇧
Mildenhall? You must've seen a lot of cool stuff! SR-71s,, RC-135s, U2s...Lucky!
80’s and 90’s were the golden era for some of the most incredible technological advances in aviation! I bet you saw some very impressive planes?
418th test wing logo features a flying triangle. that's a really good poke at conspiracists.
I don’t know for certain, but I think they might go through a cleaning process, defueling adding of preservative oils.
I think you are right, because just about all planes leak, and I didn’t see any puddles under the wings. Im sure it’s quite the process
I’d love to see a couple of billionaires donate funds to build another major hangar (museum) for these important aircraft
