The actor playing the joker was Heath Ledger. He won an Oscar for his performance. Unfortunately, he passed away prior to the release of the film, and did not see the acclaim this role would earn him.
He won an Oscar BECAUSE he passed , imo Jared Leto did a much better psycho ✌️
@@charlesbarnes6912 Jared Leto wasnt nominated against him. He won because in that year he was by far the best supporting performance.
@@charlesbarnes6912um… … wrong year dude. Get your facts straight before posting. You wouldn’t wanna look like a dummy.
Don't sugar coat it. He killed himself. I will assume unintentionally, but he was struggling with addiction. It is sad either way, but it wasn't just a passing away, it was an overdose. Sorry, but I take addiction a touch personally as it has been my JOKER for far too many years.
@@charlesbarnes6912 omg what planet are you on. Lotto's joker was crap

The actor who played the Joker was Heath Ledger. This was one of his final roles before his untimely death
very unfortunate, he was amazing in this.
@AwesomeUSMovies yeah, he was. He was posthumously awarded the Oscar for his performance in this movie
You know the actor who's playing the Joker. He played Benjamin Martin's oldest son Gabriel in "The Patriot". He was killed by that evil English officer. There's an entire Gulf of difference between the two roles.
The "Patriot" is historically BS..
@ That has nothing to do with my comment.
@katrinacash6393 Actually it does, you mentioned the "Patriot" & "Evil English officer" the one who burned the church with the people locked inside. Yeah that didn't happen. It did happen in WW2 but it was the Nazi's doing the burning, Hense the comment about the film & character you mentioned being historicaly speaking BS.. 👍
@@Markus117dWho cares? It’s a great film & Heath is great in it.
You might also know Heath from "A Knight's Tale" or "10 Things I Hate About You", both great films if you haven't seen them before
I took a writing class once, and when we talked about the art of writing a villain, we talked about this version of the Joker a lot. He’s exceptionally terrifying, and one of the ingenious reasons why is that he forever remains a mystery. Anytime he shares his backstory, he keeps changing it, so in the end we have no idea who he really is or where he really came from. He is beyond explanation, a force of chaos, a man who lives to, as Alfred put it, just watch the world burn.
Oh my lord! He called Gotham Metropolis! 🤨 Now we must fight! 😂😂
Yeah, the Joker changes the story of how he got the scars. In the comic book the Joker has said when it comes to his personal history he prefers multiple choice.
The Semi Truck Flip was a real practical effect and was done in one take! And they got it within like 6 inches of their target. Probably my favorite film scene ever! Great reaction bud!
Small detail. When joker hands Harvey the revolver he keeps his finger on the hammer. That way if Harvey pulled the trigger he could stop it.
That's interesting
7:01
"Is This Supposed To Be The Same Girl From The First Movie?"
Yes, sir, James. From what I remembered hearing, Katie Holmes, the actress who played Rachel in the previous movie, wasn't available to reprise the role of Rachel Dawes, so they'd recast the character with Maggie Gylenhall in the role
WAY different looking women. It was a bit jarring
Heath Ledger's Joker is the embodiment of intrusive thoughts. The intrusive thoughts win with him. Every time.
I don't care what anyone says about cartoon Batman shows and movies, this right here is the best Joker performance ever. I'm glad Ledger won an Oscar. Great reaction! Keep up the Awesome work!
I keep saying when somebody mentions this movie, its the Joker looking like Heath ledger in make up!
@johnbernhardtsen3008 Cool story. When I saw this in the theater, I couldn't even recognize him from The Patriot, A Knight's Tale and others. I only realized it was the same person a little later in the day. To me, this right here IS the Joker.
Absolutely
He kills Harvey because it's more politically convenient and you think this is the best Batman?
Thanks for the support
Technically Joker doesn't plan, he just has a thought and does it. And he isn't actually insane, he's hyper aware.
If you didn't catch it, Batman said he was going after Rachel, but he ended up where Harvey was. Joker knew that is what Batman would do (go after Rachel), so he switched the addresses, giving Batman the address for Harvey instead of Rachel.
I'm so happy you are watching the batman movies. These are the best superhero movies

The C.I.A. really did the skyhook back in the day and did get the folks back in the plane. Crazy!!
RIP. HEATH.💔
this is the greatest comic book movie of all time, no debate
Other Heath Ledger roles you should check out - A Knight's Tale, Brokeback Mountain, 10 Things I Hate About You, The Patriot, and maybe The Brother's Grimm.
He’s actually seen The Patriot on the Channel, but I doubt he would realize it’s the same person. He transformed so much between both roles
Yeah someone commented who he was in the Patriot. I never would have put those two together. Here is a link to my Patriot reaction: th-cam.com/video/nz9-vk_SDb0/w-d-xo.html
The reason Joker changes the story is case the Joker has a famous line where he says "If I'm going to have a past, I prefer it be multiple choice." Joker is supposed to have an unknown past.
Sure makes things interesting
@@AwesomeUSMovies Mhm.
While Michael Keaton, Tim Burton's Batman, is both the best Batman and Bruce Wayne, this is the quintessential Batman movie. It does get bogged down with very often too blatant discussions of morality where the Burton version from 1989 does a lot more show don't tell, it has the best Joker and proved that you could take a comic book action movie a bit more seriously and make it more adult. Burton's Batman is more adult compared to previous live action Batman incarnations, but it was still very much a comic book movie. Heath Ledger prior to this was known as a heartthrob for teenage girls and was in those kids of movies. Between this and Brokeback Mountain, he proved he could do more than be the 2000s Channing Tatum.
In no way is Keaton the best Batman or Bruce Wayne. There's barely any character development in those movies for the character to shine let alone the other aspects of the character. The suit was cool but too heavy and impractical and because of that Keaton was doing stiff movements like Robocop and you can tell that the fights scenes were edited to make Batman stronger and better than he actual was. Keaton was basically a Robocop with cape in the Batman film he starred in. Even Val Kilmer showed improvements in his portrayal of the character because he wore a suit the was practical and that's why Kilmer was more convincing in the fight scenes. Kilmer at least fought thugs who posed a bigger threat, not some fat old dudes totally out of shape. It's just a shame that Kilmer was bogged down by lame script, silliness, bright colors and weird overtones.
In my opinion Keaton was already outshined by Bale and Pattinson who only starred in one movie. Val Kilmer is pretty close. Just needed a better script in a better movie.
Don't get me started on Keaton's portrayal of Bruce Wayne. What was that? Em I supposed to take that goofball seriously? What is it with the laughably silly hair and the fact that Bruce was totally out of shape? I keep hearing how this portrayal of Bruce Wayne was amazing because Ketaon played a social outcast, a loner. Ok, I get it but I wasn't impressed because there was barely any story or character development for me to get invested in the character anyway.
I can see your admiration for Keaton as Batman even though I don't get it. Yes, he was the first and somewhat dark and serious Batman in a big summer release picture. The custom with the yellow sign was cool, as well as the voice of Batman, but please what is it with nostalgia gargoyles? Can people think for themselves? At least I'm not a sheep because I could see through to figure out what is wrong with Keaton's portrayal of Batman even though I'm not big comic book reader.
Fun fact: When the Joker was leaving the hospital, he had the actual detonator to the explosion. When he tried to use the detonator and it didn’t work, that was not in the script. It was supposed to work. So he just ad libbed and fiddled with it. The detonator went off, and his reaction to the explosion was real.
Ledger's performance is based on part on Tom Waits. There is an interview with Waits from the 70s were Waits is drunk and/or stoned out of his mind, and definitely see the influence on the performance.
9:33 disappearing pencil trick is one of my favorite scenes of all time.
You can only play that trick one time
- Released in 2008; directed by Christopher Nolan; screenplay by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan and David S. Goyer.
- The Dark Knight won two Oscars - Best Supporting Actor for Heath Ledger as The Joker, and Best Sound Editing. It was nominated in six other categories - Best Art Direction, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Mixing, Best Visual Effects, and Best Makeup. Many consider its snub for a Best Picture nomination (along with WALL-E) as the reason why the category expanded from five to ten nominees. 2008 was the final year to date with five nominees for Best Picture.
- Heath Ledger is the second and most recent actor to win a posthumous acting Oscar (he died of a drug overdose in January 2008, six months before the movie's release). Interestingly, both actors to do it - Ledger and Peter Finch in 1976 for "Network" in the Best Actor category - were Australian.
- The Dark Knight is the third-highest ranked film on IMDb, voted on by fans. It trails only The Shawshank Redemption and The Godfather. It was also the highest-grossing film of 2008, earning just over $1 billion in gross.
- This was the first movie that was filmed with high-resolution IMAX film cameras.
- Heath Ledger spent a month in seclusion in a hotel room to develop his character.
- Matt Damon was considered for the role of Harvey Dent, but has scheduling conflicts. Christopher Nolan wanted an actor with an "all-American charm," which led to Aaron Eckhart being cast.
- Most of the film was shot on location in Chicago. A multi-level street called Wacker Drive had to be closed down overnight. Navy Pier served as Gotham Harbor.

Interesting Fact for you, James:
Maggie Gylenhall's look of unease was totally genuine. Heath Ledger had gotten so into character as the Joker that his portrayal coupled with the makeup he'd wore while in character terrified her to the point that she couldn't look at him (you can actually hear Heath saying "Look At Me" to her during these scenes)
creepy
@AwesomeUSMovies More than that, Alfred was supposed to speak during the scene (or A scene), but Ledgers performance scared Michael Caine so much that he forgot to say it.
Heath Ledger prepped for weeks in a hotel room by researching, practicing voices, creating a physicality, and immersing himself in everything he could find on the background character of The Joker. Apparently he found it exhausting, draining, and psychologically taxing. The result of it, however, is the character that won many awards, including the Oscar, the BAFTA, and more. He died shortly after, unfortunately. Gone too soon. His Joker is by far my favorite of all time.
Great reaction James to one of the best batman movies ever. Glad u enjoyed it.
There's The Dark Knight Trilogy, a self-contained universe.
Then there's the self-contained universe of The Batman which came out a couple years ago, and its in-universe series The Penguin, The Batman 2 will becoming out in a couple years.
Then there's there's the DCEU, which was actually pretty good - despite what Marvel fans say:
Man of Steel
Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice (Extended Edition)
Suicide Squad
Wonder Woman
Justice League (The Snyder Cut)
Aquaman
Shazam
Wonder Woman 2
The Suicide Squad
Black Adam
The Flash
Aquaman 2
Shazam 2
Blue Beetle
OMG soooo much DC I had know idea
We can all thank Frank Miller, for showing us what Batman is supposed to be. ❤
23:13 The Shadow woulda put 45 rounds from each of his .45's into Joker by this point
I feel like this is a reupload...is this a reupload?
Commenting out of curiosity...and because comments support the channel. LOL
Also...James...please do not get fatigued by any of the franchises. I worry that you watching too many Marvel Cinematic Universe movies in such rapid succession will just give you MCU burnout...so I hope you will alter your watching of those films if you feel that kind of burn out coming on. Love channel, and would hate to see you not enjoy any movies because of fatigue from watching too many in a series....good luck on your Marvel journey! 😁
Nope this isn't a re-upload. Batman Begins came out last week. The Dark Knight Rises comes out next week.
@@AwesomeUSMovies Oh...I could have sworn you had posted this earlier...no matter, just makes it more fun to watch along with you. Also, if you want more info on that balloon plane catch thing for picking up a person, it is usually called Skyhook...but the official name is the Fulton surface to air recovery system.😁
That scene where Joker slices the mob guys mouth was done poorly. That wouldn't kill you. You would scream in pain and be bleeding a lot, but it wouldn't be a silent insta kill like that.
23:01 So the semi flipping took only one take, but with a lot of testing in pre-production. Christopher Nolan prides himself on shooting things “practically,” which in movie terms just means without special effects. So they really did flip over an 18 wheeler for that shot. Also, the shot of the Batmobile smashing that garbage truck into the ceiling was also real, but they used miniatures.
13 with the bridge is in Chicago
It's cute how out of all the things that are not real, the only time you cry the foul is the reverse engineering of the fingerprint.
Because it's egregiously dumb...
Come on, some of that stuff could be future tech stuff. The fingerprint thing NEVER ever!
Heath Ledger was so awesome in the movie that he got an Oscar, although the movie was basically what killed him 😢. I would suggest two movies that show him in his great skills: Brokeback Mountain and A Knight's Tale.
James! great movie, HUH? definitely a great reaction. really love your channels and as the young folk say "content". You're hilarious and have genuine charisma as a reactor. I really like the reactors who i feel like if i knew them in person we would be friends. and that's you. i promise i'm not a weirdo or stalker. keep up the great reactions and thanks
41:00 finally! The return of the MCU content is nigh! This is gonna be great 😁

RIP HL!
Wait a minute, wait a minute…when u said u were watching the MCU in the month of March like a week ago I thought u misspoke…but u showed a calendar that has almost every day watching another movie & holy overload on superheroes, m’friend!😃 I’m not complaining-love ur reactions, James & u’ll enjoy quite a few of them. Just be ready for a whole lotta…superpowered “enhanced” folks w/pretty wild storylines. I’m concerned u. Are. Not. Prepared.😉
I hope you get a chance to watch the ''66 Batman movie.
And series!
You would think a lot of people would have been like Batman killed Harvey? These years go by where he doesn't kill, then suddenly now he does? That seems a bit suspicious....
Yes they recast Rachel.
Alright James, once you've finished this epic ride with the trilogy...I highly suggest that at some point, you check out the 1966 Batman movie. That is the Batman that I grew up with.
😎👍
Was waiting for this one! Great reaction
It's a good one!
The Batman trilogy is a great series!
Hell yeah brother!!
You should check out the 1989 Batman movie with Michael Keaton as Batman
4:29
He is paralyzed.
I can't wait to see your MARVEL adventure! ❤
MCU madness is coming in March!
@AwesomeUSMovies Let's go! Just prepare to take a moment with everything after Endgame. Even we are still sorting out the clusterfuck of timelines, realities, canon events, etc.
Start with WandaVision after Spider-Man Far From Home and you'll be where we were at the time. Follow with Falcon and the Winter Soldier and then Loki season 01. We'll work from there when we get there 😉
While I enjoy Heath's Joker (RIP) everything else in The Dark Knight sits poorly with me. Batman straight-up eliminates Harvey because it's more convenient than making him face justice, which is against everything Batman stands for.
Greetings from Finland man!!! Great reaction and Heath Ledger who played the Joker scared the hell out of Michael Caine aka "Alfred" in the fundraising party by his performance that he forgot his lines for the scene and it was left that way. "i'll be back" 😎
Thanks, hello Finland. I want to go there someday
@AwesomeUSMovies Your more than a welcome here 🙂 Heath Ledger also locked himself in a hotel room for several weeks to en body the Joker and get on the "right mindset".. "i'll be back" 😎

I know right, a guy at work was wearing it so he sent me a link. It's on Amazon. Just make sure you order one size bigger.

You NEED to watch BATMAN 1989 and BATMAN RETURNS!!!
Gotham cuty is supposed to represent chicago but on the dc map its on the coast, but joker actually did more for gotham than batman did, joke brought peace through chaos... Shut up neitchie
The pro tip is to stop this movie when the joker has his head of out the car window and pretend that’s the end of the movie
But you've skipped the 1989 Batman with Michael Keaton?
Heath ledger plays joker, this rolle killed him, well sleeping pills killed him but the stress of playing joker lead to that
That's a false narrative.
@michaeljacyna1973 im the narrator it happend just how i said it, i coupd type up a thesis and go into great detail what happend but since i like heath ledger it happed how i said it happend im not morgran freeman
@Raven5150 No. Stress from playing the joker didn't play into it. He took sleeping pills because he had insomnia that predated his role. He died after filming was wrapped. The combination of the sleeping pills plus cold medicine (because he was sick) alng with other drugs he may have been addicted to killed him. This idea that it was the role is A FALSE NARRATIVE
@@Raven5150 IDC if you're morgan freeman or not. Don't spread false things on the internet because you think it's a better or more tragic story.
@michaeljacyna1973 ok deal no one ever spread false crap on the internet again, even though i spoke the truth. Just trust the media.
Comic book history lesson for james, dc stands for detective comics, marvel i wish i could tell you what they were called before marvep, but jack kirby is the great creator for marvel, but back to batman, the joker is the greatest villian ever created, and not populr opinian this isnt the best version of the character, no where in the top 4 best batman, kevin conroy is the best batman, and mark Hamil is the 2nd best joker, batman very much does use guns im tired of the slander.
Fact - This movie is highly inspired by the movie Heat.
super hero movies are pure dog shit
