    I remember during the first COVID summer, many supermarkets had 24 can cases of this at a really good price - I guess excess stock sent direct from Spain as we Brits were all at home! I brought a load - always a taste of good times 🍺

    I always look at the small writing to see what country the beers are brewed in, at the moment going for Budvar myself the local water i think helps with the brewing.

    San Miguel in the Philippines has so many more varieties, from lite to dark lager to flavoured beers. You should travel the country and try all of them out.😊

    To be fair UK brewed San Miguel (still at 5%) is one of the better 'UK' lagers, I certainly wouldn't call it 'tinny' or 'watery' like you alluded to here. I'm not saying it's a top-class lager, but it's not in the same league as your 4.6% Stella, or a Newcastle Brown Ale.

      Cruzcampo is the beer we make jokes about here in Spain about what you drink when you don’t fancy a beer. At the moment there’s a big craft thing going on in Spain and there are way better macro beers than San Miguel.

    San Miguel started in the Phillipeans and got taken across to Spain many years ago, I’m sure they now run as separate companies, it’s certainly a different beer sold in Asia.
    That’s the story I was told/know and like yourself it’s only the last decade I realised it didn’t originate in Spain.

    San Miguel got me totally ratted when I went to Spain in 1990. I'd been driving all day down the east coast of Spain to my holiday destination. I was really thirsty and had three 75cl bottles with my dinner. The next day - huge headache! I learnt my lesson and found lighter Spanish beers with lower abv to drink! Current favourite is Estrella Galicia.

    All malt lager. Had a quick google and corn (maize), barley, wheat, rice, is classed as a malt. Any 1 know the answer? Also corn syrup, could that be classed as all malt lager

    • @vmont626
      @vmont626 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If syrup is in there, then it's should be on the label. Maybe there is like sweet type maize, that we like to eat cooked, and sometimes it really is sweet.

    Thanks for reviewing San Miguel. It´s not as sweet as the other Spanish Lagers in spite of the corn. Most of the Lagers here have that sweet, syrupy taste that you mention because they use either corn or rice. I think it´s because they make it to suit the Spanish palate. Hoppy, bitter beers aren´t massively popular here.

    I hate the fact that all these "beers" are brewed over here to markedly different flavours/standards. I remember when Corona was about £10 for 4 bottles (as export)in the 90s and was like liquid gold, compared to the shit that's now £10 for 18 in tesco. Same with san miguel. I've had the proper "this is what the Spanish drink" shit and it pisses all over the mass produced w**k we get palmed off with!!!

      And always weaker.

    • @zerooneonetwothree1872
      @zerooneonetwothree1872 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Companies know they will loose sales and get a bad rep if you expose consumers to great beer for them to compare it to your piss. Same is happening here in Serbia, foreigners think our beer is great, but its watered down carbonated piss with stinky feet aroma when you compare it to the San Miguel imported from Spain, or Asahi from Italy, or Daura Damm from Spain. Ofc, there are few small breweries/bars that have good beer and some that suck ass, but to buy in a bottle or a can and bring home, domestic beer is garbage, only reason why people buy it is because they are alcoholic and prefer 8 shit beers over 4 good ones or they lie to themselves that its great, its the best and remain in their bubble of cognitive dissonance...

  • @Mike7O7O
    @Mike7O7O 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    From memory, Spanish lagers do tend to be very malty. Is that not fairly prevalent across the Continent? I'm not sure. Genuinely asking.
    I think what the producers do. Is import a beer/lager from its home country or nearest sales territory to start with and to test the market.
    At some point. Maybe when its economic to contract out volume production to a UK brewer, the foreign brand switches. Same label, but now brewed in the UK. Possibly with different tax levels applying to different strengths. Compared to the brand's home market. I say that, because the beer / lager nearly always becomes weaker in abv as far as I can recall.
    Personally, I wouldn't drink anything under about 5.5% abv. Simply because it tastes too weak and I may as well be drinking water. I really prefer at least 6.0 or ideally around or over 7.0 abv.
    Thanks for the solid review. Sounds like this is worth trying. If its stocked locally to me, here in Northern Ireland / Beer Siberia :/
