Agree Peter. Revell has many dogs in it's line up but yet can produce some great kits. For example the new mold 2023 1/32 Hurricane is a great kit. I've also enjoyed their newer 1/32 P-51D, 1/32 spitfires, BF109's and FW190 kits. I also hear the 1/32 Me 262 is a great kit. They aren't packed with extras, but are easy builds with great detail for the price. Plus they usually have Cartograph decals unlike others...ahem Eduard.
Revell Germany started out as a subsidiary of the American company as far back as 1956. They started designing and producing their own kits around 1970 and some of the more unusual kits such as the Bucket Wheel Excavator, the Shell North Cormorant Oil Rig and the Shuttle Launch Pad all originated in Germany.
🎯 Peter, you nailed it from start to finish. Revell is their own worst enemy. Well past time for them to "clean up their act" or face extinction. Perhaps you may need a "stiffer" beverage 🥃 after this model manufacturer review⁉️ Cheers🍷😊

Last time i built a Revell kit was back in 2013, and that was the 1/32 Tornado ECR "Tiger Meet". Was actually a nice kit to build, a few fit issues and lack of some detail, mainly the interiors of the intakes. Had to make FOD covers. Apart from that it was outstanding.
I have walked away from Revell for decades now. Worked in multiple General Motors plants throughout Michigan as a skilled trades contractor. That being said, the majority of my stash contains Tamiya and other 🇯🇵 manufacturers. Moreover, every vehicle in my driveway is of Japanese design and engineering. Worry, free and Less stressful life for me ! 👍
Good talk Peter, one thing to note (I know this is an extended re-upload) Monogram was actually the purchaser in the late 1990s. Up until the German acquisition, all the Revell kits were made at the Monogram plant in Illinois. Monogram used the Revell trademark solely because of its worldwide market reach. Revell had many sub brands already (Revell Germany, Revell Great Britain, Revell Japan etc..) but it was actually Monogram that owned Revell.

I absolutely agree sir. Revell needs to at least label “classic” or something! They have very recently reboxed ICMs amazing model T ford which is the best T in scale to date and people think it’s their release. It’s just wrong. They should make kits of their own or get out of the business. So many companies are designing and producing fantastic new kits and Revell is just skating on other companies hard work

The ironic thing is that, about 20 years ago, that is EXACTLY what they did. They put "Classic" badges on some of their old tool boxings, such as the box scale kits of the Ajax and Jupiter missiles and even their mouldings of the Matchbox Twin Otter and Handley Page Heyford. They should go back to that.
Airfix have, in the past, also issued old kits in "modern" boxes - and got heavilly criticised (quite rightly) for this practice. Badging their current "oldies" as "Classics" is a good marketing ploy and they get a bit of extra kudos for being honest too.
I understand it’s a business practice that a lot of companies do it’s just a bit annoying because they don’t seem to be introducing any new tool products of their own these days. I’m sure they pay for the right to rebox. They’ve been around so long and I grew up building their kits I guess I’m just a bit disappointed.

Totally agree Peter, I bought the Battle of Britain 80th anniversary box set, (albeit at an attractive price) the spitfire, hurricane and stuka are all 1960s moulds! The flash on the Ju 87 was worse than anything I remember from being a schoolboy in the 70s and I didn't rate Revell even then. The Ju88 was the only thing worth buying, very disappointed. I should have known better. However I appreciate the matchbox reboxing kits, saves using originals from the stash! James.
Nail, head, hit. buyer beware with Revell, I generally avoid unless I have done a lot of research. 6/10, generous!

Hi Peter. I totally agree with your comments. I am 58 years old and I have been making kits for at least 45 years. So as you can see I am an experienced model maker. I can remember some of their old kits ( Ta 152 ) to name but one and they were bad back in the day and they are still producing it to this day, and its still rubbish. I bought their 1/35th scale Mercedes G4 and it is a lovely kit, made by ICM. I had a similar issue with a kit I bought within the last ten years about quality. I had been waiting years for someone to produce a plastic kit of the Panzer Lowe in 1/72nd. Low and behold Armoury models stepped up. It was released in time for it to be paired with the World of Tanks game, so there was a tie in. I didn,t hesitate. I got it home and as most of us do started go offer some parts up to each other. The fit of some parts was awful. The upper and lower hull parts would not meet up at the front, the fenders were so thick that the tracks would not fit around the sprocket but by far the worst part was that there was no ring lock between the turret and the hull. So with the lovely turned metal barrel in place the turret fell off because of the weight. So I looked on TH-cam for their own in house build video and the guy who built it had the same problems as I was having. He called it a bad kit. That was their own guy ! He said that they had rushed the kit through just so they could tie it in with the release of the game. Revell have been doing the same for years. Re-box and re-sell, no production checks and poor quality fit and parts issues. I build small scale tanks nowadays and some of Revells are very good. But I still come across the Turkeys now and again. Their Tiger 1 E for example. Good kit overall but a problem with the upper hull plate. Its only when you cut it into 3 seperate pieces do you find out where the problem is. Its about a milimeter and a bit to short. So you end up with a gap thats very noticable. An experienced modeller like me knew how to fix it but a novice wouldn,t. So in summary I agree with you. Come on Revell pull your finger out, you have been getting away with it for years but now the competition are surpassing you and it shows. You are risking your business. One thing about the modelling community is the use of word of mouth. We all talk to each other so it doesn,t take long for a bad kit to get noticed and pointed out to the rest of us. They can make good kits, for me their Heinkel 177 was a pretty good kit. I enjoyed that when I built it. Sorry for the long posting but there you have it . A big player going down the toilet. Be warned Revell. A very enjoyable video Peter and very imformative, thanks. Regards.
The Ta152 was originally a FROG kit - as Revell managed to get their hands on some FROG moulds too.
I do agree, they should be honest n let us know about age of tooling, "Classic collection ect"
Don't get me wrong l have really enjoyed building the last X2 l built and came out well, but l did have to rebuild a miss shaped part!! But I enjoy challenge n can do that.
But not fair to beginners ect.
Revelle makes most it's sales from the box art n presentation, be careful your not buying a poo in puff pastry 😢
Peter, I dodged that 1/48 Blackbird bullet as well. 😅 I have several Revell kits, from a long long time ago, and I prize these because they are models of esoteric aircraft that other kit manufacturers haven’t touched. With Revell, I ALWAYS do due diligence before buying any of their kits - I’ve been burned by some of their real stinkers (yes, that 1/32 Corsair is one). 🥂
The Revell Das Boot U 96 lovely kit , slightly dubious plastic and confusing instructions but the killer is the bloody box,and that's why I still haven't built it until I can dedicate building it start to finish in one go. Where do you store it mid build etc.Oh btw the 40th anniversary edition includes a movie poster which is excellent

Revell looks like it's a company where the bean counters have all the decision making power. That's how Airfix appeared 20 years ago. Thankfully Airfix turned it around, hopefully Revell can do the same thing.

I picked up an Me-110 C2/C7 by Revell ( a Dragon reboxing ) only way to tell was a "made in Poland" note on end of box...very small but was there (Thanx to Nigel for the heads up) Very happy with it compared to the original G-2 nightfighter kit, no comparison there. Totally agree about the TV Dinner boxes, very unsatisfactory. Thanks for letting me also vent, Dane

It's unfathomable how they seem determined to shoot themselves down.
How disinterested must their management be in the hobby if they can't tell a good product from bad one?
And they have plenty of good ones. My recently done 32nd 109G and said 72nd F15E, the Phantom reboxing, their 32nd Mustang and even that Tornado (if only for value).
So how they fail so catastrophically, so often, in product and marketing, is beyond me.

and I'm of the view that the Tornado you single out actually IS good value, because you can pay £30 and make a 48th Tornado which looks like one. The problem is a lack of competition to it. Discussing value is best when there is an alternative to compare to eh?
CMK is Czech Model/Master Kit. I got suckered by the blue box Bristol Beaufighter purchased when the HE-111 and the Arado 196 were big on the scene.
I got caught out some years back with the 1/72 dornier 17. I thought it was a new model. It definitely wasn't.
I was mainly an (Airfix) plane modeller when I was a kid in the 70s but I did love these Matchbox armour kits. How on earth can something that cost me, I think, no more than 50p in1975 (less I think) cost £23 now! when 50p in 1975 money would be c. £3.75 now?
Completely agree. You can get a corker, but you need to research. Not something you need to do with Tamiya, or even Airfix, (although their QC is hardly outstanding). Revell are taking the Pis* though with models like the 1/32 corsair, which I built when it was just a couple of years old for pocket money prices, and selling it in a new box for just a couple of quid cheaper than their 2015 batch of kits that are pretty nice, such as the 1/32 FW-190s, with fairly decent engine detail, decent decals, bombs, tanks, and a STAND. Also their quite reasonable, and cheap 1/32 Spitfires, and Tempest V. All of which I bought for the same price as the old F-4U a couple of years ago.
The utterly useless boxes are the worst thing though. I bought their re-boxing of the ICM He-111. How the kit survived being transported in that garden shed of a box is beyond me. I haven't seen the ICM box, but I guarantee it is 1/3 the size. Don't even get me started on the size of the 1/32 Revell Me-110 box (I sold my house when I got that and am now living in it).
Great movie! I totally agree to your points (the box is awfull), they give us customers few reasons to like their kits, even if they started us into the hobby.
Revell just need to up their game , like Airfix have done.

I'm going to call you out on your notion of value though, at least as far as Revell are concerned...........in some instances, in other instances you're spot on.
The example of the Tornado you mentioned, I think your ideas are particularly bottom for mammary.
From memory, you said it was a £30 kit with your £120 aftermarket, meaning it's a £150 kit, so selling it at £30 isn't good value. All your aftermarket products I'd never use building that kit, so is £150 good value to me? Maybe I'm in the minority - but regarding Revell's target market, i don't think I am, I think they're spot on.
So if some would like to improve the kit offering at expense to themselves, like you - let them. Then nobody has lost. But don't ask me to spend more money for your extras and call it value.

At the moment I am building their rather nice little 72nd Ju-88 A4. But it does suffer from another problem of their kit designs. That is the numbering and positioning of the parts on the sprue trees. Like you, I keep thinking...there is no way this was designed by a German engineer?
They are all over the place, no logical numbering.
On a smaller kit it is not too bad...however on say a large 32nd kit with 10 or more sprue trees you have to dig through all the plastic in the box to find the seat, which is not on the sprue with the cockpit floor...Oh no, it will be hidden on the sprue with some of the engine parts. The engine parts will be all over the place on different sprues. Each sprue tree will be numbered 1,2, 115, 19, 320 in a ridiculous illogical non linear fashion🤔🤪

Totally agree Peter they’ve been found out renamed company name “Robelle”
Where they have excelled in recent years has been with some of their 1/24 vehicles...the Routemaster bus for instance. However some kits appear to have been tooled by two different teams...the Schlingmann fire engine has superb detail on the chassis and bodywork, however the sprues holding the detail parts that go inside the lockers are rather toy-like with soft detail.
If you want an accurate model , go for Tamiya , Miniart, etc. paying over £100 for a Revell kit is just nuts.

Well all I had was Revell and monogram. Didn’t see a Tamiya till my teens. Could not afford it anyways. I still buy Revell And Tamiya. I don’t like Airfix and definitely not Matchbox. But just me being in America I guess. 🎉👌🏻. But being I started modeling in 1975. Not much to choose from.
I did their 1/72 Hunter .. and I found that an excellent kit
At a much younger age I found that Revell aircraft models could actually fly.....straight out the window after my tenth attempt to get the landing gear to fit the holes it didn't match required me to express my views on that company's quality control in as robust a manner as possible. Lots of words rhyming with 'duck' as I recall now accompanied the kit in question being removed from my presence.

I'm an experienced modeler and generally stay away from Revell. However, two of the most enjoyable builds I have done in the last few years have been their 1/72 FAMO (kit no. 03141) and the 1/72 21 cm Morser 18 cannon (kit no. 03169). To my complete surprise, both kits were a joy to build and exhibited very fine detail, crisp moldings, scale thin parts, and excellent fit. When photographed, they could pass for 1/35th scale, and the diorama I built around them won at many shows. I also did a 1/144 U-Boat of theirs which was highly detailed and went together very well. I never expected that, and I'm puzzled how the same manufacturer can be so inconsistent. To your point, the only way to buy Revell is to check reviews and Scalemates before buying, and I remain skeptical about much of their products. Being owned by private equity is not a good omen either.

This is a sad reflection of where much of the world is going. Companies which once had a solid reputation for quality and fairness have been bought out by avaricious sharks who care only about profit. They are invariably run by bean counters who know little, if anything, about the product, the customers or the market. A similar thing happened to Mercedes Benz some years ago, which nearly finished the company. In Britain, there are dozens of former good companies which made good products which have been bought by (often foreign) owners and either ruined or closed. Cadbury’s is one example, so is Thames Water, British Steel (as was), ICI, Debenhams, Courtaulds, Rolls Royce, Harrods, Raleigh and many many more. The ones which have survived are nothing more than ‘brands’. It’s globalism and an increasingly small number of powerful corporations own an increasingly large number of former great businesses.

Agreed, agreed. I don't bye moden Revel unless there's no alternative, some of the best Revell molding are the small 1/72 figures especially the naval figures. in my stash i only have the 1/72 S Boat the Heinkel He177 which is reasonable except a couple of miss-shapen wheels but as it is the only 1/72 version on the market, and the recently released 1\72 88mm flak with all the accessories and quite expensive especially compared to Hasagawa, Zvezda and Ace, but it came with nom crew and was grossly over engineered and at about R.190 way more expensive than all the other models. take the Zvezda version that was only about R60 and cane with crew. I also have a couple of 1/72 figure sets which are very good, better than Airfix.but i still say the Zvezda1/72 figure set from the 'art of tactic series" are probably the best value figure sets on the market and they are paintable, as they are not molded in the horrible rubbery plastic. Revell used to make good lit back in the 60's with decant armour and the American Century series of jets and the pilot figures in those were some of the best on the market Just check out the F100 Super Saber, F101 Voodoo and the F.86 Scorpion for pilots, the cockpit and figures were moulded in one piece. I think the molds were made in the US and the molding for Europe was done in Germany. these old Revell kits are still valid today especially for younger modelers. As I feel they would easily stand up to most moden kits their main failing would be in the details like wheel-wells etc. They looked good finished well reasonably straight forward assembly and if the were reasonably priced I'd by them. the main problem being I believe they were box scale being larger than 1/72 and smaller than 1/48 that were usually referred to as box scale. like their ships. Revell have made some superb model in the past like the i/72 Lockheed Neptune and some of their show cars and funny cars and dragsters.i often wonder what happened to those molds like Don Garlits Wynn's-Jammer and tommy clancy's the wedge from the mid 60'sand the Show-Boat with four engines. These were moulds made in the UIS and then pressed in the US and in Germany And how about the re-release of your simple WW1 1/72 model all we ever see is the revamped sopwith camel and the dickied up Dr1 tryplanewso what happened to the rest come on Revell the field is wide open with only airfix doing the Be2 and the Eindecker and a handful of Eduard Albatrosses and the odd Focker the only other company doing WW1 aircraft is Roden but their range has become pretty static of late So if you do re-tooling them just take a look at how well they do there struts. I'm also waiting for the 1/72 Ki 45 to reappear how about some re-releases of your 1/72 WW1 aircraft? while you are working on your new B29 or Martin MB1 bomber the one dolittle used to sink the battleship target or something.
@@idiot-cd6pl Of course we have to remember that a lot of the decent older 1/72 & 1/76 Revell kits are actually Matchbox products reboxed...it seems the best products they sell are usually made by someone else & reboxed which is the problem they seem to have.
as for value... a $12.00 kit is a $12.00 kit... not suddenly a $53.00 kit while production prices may have increased, I'd be surprised if they have gone up 300% as these molds already exist. Dane

Keep the "new" Revell 1:32 F16 50th Anniversary in mind. Old wine in new skins for 50.-€. Nearly as old as the Harrier kit and already in the 80s nothing special.
Revell could do far worse than copy the ICM packaging.

A new modeller buys a couple of poor kits and will leave the hobby forever thinking its them that has no skill. A couple of good kits will flatter them and they will have a lifetime of modelling fun.
