Time Team S20-E11 An Englishman's Castle

- What happens when you try to create your own grand design but find a mystery at the heart of your home, and its origins are so unclear that it could either be medieval or Victorian? You call in Time Team to help you work out the answers.
When Steve and Pru Barlow fell in love with pretty Upton Castle in Pembrokeshire they had little idea what they were buying. Acres of overgrown gardens surrounded the building, which looked like a medieval castle at the front and a Victorian mansion at the back.
It was a romantic mystery. Is it part of the network of castles built by Anglo-Norman invaders to defend themselves against Welsh tribes? Or perhaps a Victorian folly?
Two effigies in the castle's chapel may provide a key clue, but are they originals or copies? And the chapel's age and origins are no clearer than the castle's.
Tony and the Team dig trenches as they look for a medieval courtyard, building specialists crawl through the roof, there's digging out front for the remains of a drawbridge, and there's a mound of documents to pore over... and some wet Welsh weather to contend with.
Can the Team determine if Steve and Pru's home really was one of the Anglo-Norman castles built to defend 'Little England beyond Wales' from the locals?
Just discovered from the comments section that Mick Aston passed away in 2013. Too late perhaps to pass on my comiserations to his family and friends, but I was shocked. It's so comforting to think that such people exist in the world doing such good. He will be missed.
What a marvellous example of such brilliance and ability to communicate to and with everyone. I miss him.

Exactly, and from the perspective of a Sociologist, he had a noticeably mild ease in management, yet they all highly respected and liked him. This reflects his balance with self, the harmony achieved when we have self worth, self confidence, and a consistent Character + Personality. (This means he was comfortable in his own skin, this he wasn't bothered by others having their own and variable different perspective. Key benefit and a reflection of a Higher Mind/Mature Mind.
None of us are always right and the flexibility found with Mature Minds allows for "new finds/facts" Being accepted and our perspectives having a forward evolving direction. Essential to Academics in Science, History, and Archaeology.
I respect and appreciate folks like Mick, for their very balanced in harmony energies, it is also a reflection of a healthy and Mature State of one's Emotional Development.
(As opposed to adults whom demonstrate an Adolescent Emotional Development. ... I needed provide an example of that, lol, Mainstream News Media and particular Political Individuals do that for everyone's observation.

A shame that the "Time Team" Producers missed the opportunity to air in the USA Market, they certainly left a great deal of money on the table, as there's no question "Time Team" would have enjoyed equal success in the USA, and this is obvious through the vast sharing on TH-cam, the number of USA hits, and comments are huge.
I enjoy these as if they were current.

It's never to late to show his family your admirations. I'm always proud when I hear stories from people, about my lost love ones, about how they impacted their lives for the better.

They always did such a great job with their filming and the overall story line. Sir Tony was an excellent choice for the Presenter.
TIME TEAM THERAPY:
I haven't seen any comments posted on perhaps one of the best purposes of time team: Viewer Relaxtion Therapy. The reasons it works for me, and why I recommend it to others, is that the show is interesting. It engages your mind and discoveries are made, but it doesn't really matter if they do or not. So, after a stressful day - or before one - it gets your focus off of your problems. That is very healing. And because you learn something, you feel that your time was not wasted, like it would be after a sit-com. (TT's therapeutic aspects were hinted at in the military therapy segment, but I'm referring to its benefit ordinary people.)
Over the past year I have sequentially watched all of the Time Team episodes, and enjoy them all. I am very thankful for them and what I have learned - so different than my university archaeology classes, which were more historically based than this show which is excavation based.
Having favorite team contributors is natural; but I am sorry to see so many harsh comments about some of the members. The participants have been themselves: they don't need to immitate someone else. They have all added information, perspective, and texture to the series. Each episode was worthwhile, although I too enjoy them more when significant discoveries are made.

My fave rave is to curl up on the couch in winter and watch The Time Team. Hope the time team goes on forever!....Love this show too as well as all the team. Im a fan of Paul Blinkhorn and his pottery findings, Tony, Racksha et al.
I really like this episode. I've watched it several times. So hard to imagine 800 years of time going by, but here it still stands. It would be nice if they could afford to repair the effigies in the chapel and at least make a plaque commemorating who is buried there.

A small point - yew trees are only to be found in churchyards because the berries are poisonous to cattle.

Oh same here! Absolutely love it! Especially the visuals of how the property has evolved so that viewers get a clear picture of how it originally looked 😁 love, love, love this program. I wish it was on American t.v., on PBS at least, while I was growing up. (Yes, I watched A LOT of documentaries in elementary school and on.)

I suspect those are by people who prefer the earlier seasons of Time Team. The group changed over the last few seasons...Mick Aston actually left because of it.

I love your show I love all of England, the dear Queen and the Royal family. And god bless the King. I think Charles the third, looks very, very, Regal to me as a American Anglophile. The young lady had the most delicate looking hands I have ever seen. And then the voice of a Queen her self . To me a 65 year old Merchant Marine sailor I dare say angelic.

The owners want to know the history. If Medieval Mick, Historical Helen and Researcher Robin were still around, they would get the answer in no time. This Neil is a waste of oxygen.
Time Team cut their own throat when they cut Mick, Helen, Robin, Victor and Stuart - they meshed so well with Phil, Tony and the rest - THEY all made archaeology come to life.
Robin Bush died in 2010, several years before this program. He had been ill for several years prior to that. As for the rest? I most certainly agree. Mick quit after they dumped Helen, Stuart, et al.

Leopararouen There is no consensus about the use of gloves when handling historical documents. The British Library doesn’t make use of them as they consider clean, dry fingers to be much more sensitive to the care needs of the individual documents. Not only that but the cotton in the gloves have their own disadvantages when coming into contact with fragile documents; for example reduced manual dexterity, lifting/dislodging pigments, etc. Maybe worth knowing before calling a degree-laden historian a stupid slag!!

PS: I'm partial to the Welsh, a huge admirer of Frank Lloyd Wright, interested in Welsh History, and share the Basque forging of the early Welsh, as I'm an Irish American, lineage of Counties Kerry, and Cork.
So many episodes looking for a big hall and then, when they find one, they decide to focus on the little chapel. Great episode nonetheless.

The report you referenced (gatehouse-gazetteer) appears to be unconnected with TT, especially since it delivers quite a scathing commentary of the lack of thoroughness of TT. It is indeed a pretty lame episode, with a shortage of science and vague conclusions (the skeleton dates to "pre-castle" - why not give the actual results?).

I saw arches in the walls of French castles, and was told they were often built in as a means of strengthening a flat wall, not necessarily indicative of a prior structure.

They said it had been demolished during a re-build. The traces of its foundations were what John's geo-phys was still able to spot, underground.
After watching every single Time Team all 20 years at least once. Noticed every time this Neal guy is in charge they only do small pits and NEVER find what they are looking for. One time he couldn't find a Villa in a empty field! Complete buffoon.
I agree he's a total idiot. He's got to be the worst archeologist I've ever seen not to mention his annoying voice makes me cringe!!

Not exactly surprised a Archaeologist is highly educated and does sciency stuff. But he still can not lead a Time Team
To be fair, a lot of sites have digging restrictions, with only a limited square footage of excavation permitted...I don't believe this applied here, but it has to be said that over the years, huge trenches and widespread digging have given way in many cases to "keyhole surgery" techniques...this apparently applies even more west-pond.
This series was a return to form. Sadly it was the last.

I think they do, but the whole thing is a bit staged. The must prepare, and figure out if it's going to be worth making an episode on.
@@rogerwilco2 They don't though, it is all done in 3 days. The only work done before filming is setting up the cameras, the tents, and toilets for a film set. The people you see doing the work have full time jobs elsewhere.

Apse. It is a rounded end, a half circle in shape.
Did anyone else notice that there were at least two (2) things that didn't fit with the guy's conclusion that the storage room floor was at a different level in the past so that it made the fireplace-in-the-wall accessible? First, if the floor had previously been where he said it was, only half of the window at the end would be visible on that floor. Also, there is another fireplace or alcove in a wall that would be below the previous floor and thus, useless. Of course, the window could have been added later, but not the other feature in the wall. My point is that there might be another explanation for what the guy claimed was a fireplace higher on the wall, and he didn't climb up and get close enough to look for another explanation.
AND, Lipscomb's 'conclusion' she knew the exact identities of the effigies in the chapel based on such flimsy evidence as the style of their clothes is beyond shoddy! The style of their clothes supports --- but doesn't prove --- who they were. Moreover, nothing was said as to whether anyone had actually looked or 'excavated' in the church to see if the people are identified somewhere. Names might be covered up by newer plaster and/or paint, or previous owners might have moved the "dead people" and the record of who they are would not be near their current location. Anybody look????
One could level such an accusation at nearly every 'conclusion' that any archaeologist comes up with.

Either. They're always treated with respect and reburied in an appropriate, usually consecrated, place.

They should start opening a lot of the old tombs in England...think of wealth of knowledge and historical interest if they opened the tombs...Elizabeth, Henry VIII, and others. The addition to our knowledge of those times would be huge. It would be fascinating. No different than excavating the grave of a Saxon, Richard III, or someone who was around in the Medieval era,.i.e all those skeletons excavated in the Crosslink construction. Even King John's tomb was opened.

Actually it is different. On ground still sanctified ecclesiastical law still prevails. The burials you mentioned were in de-sanctified ground or they were in ground that had never been sanctified. To dig in sanctified ground _at all_ requires permission from the relevant _Bishop_ and to dig up a corpse requires an exhumation order from the *Home Office.* The same type of law prevails in many countries.
And to dig up a royal apparently requires the permission of the current monarch.

Bunne Rabb I’ll spare you the description of how radio carbon dating works. The gist is that mortar doesn’t contain the organic matter (carbon-14) required.
F@@CAP198462 from what I understand, it's a matter of determining how much of the carbon 14 isotope isn't there anymore, but, I had no idea it was only pertinent to organic matter. Thanks.
Given that mortar is not a carbon based life form, it should come as no great surprise that it cannot be carbon dated.

I usually watch "renovaton Home" another program, where an historian goes to defferent records offices to gather the needed information...couldn't these people do the same instead of all the guessing???
In a perverted way, I was happy when Time Team concluded after this season. Why? Well, first the changes that were made with inappropriate replacements who never seemed to "fit in" or fill any void. Second, the introduction of totally inappropriate and annoying music caused me to keep lowering the sound and so I could never really know what was being said or learn what was happening.

Watching this feels like watching Time Team through someone's interpretation of Time Team after reading only a blurb about the show and having Tony Robinson narrate that. What the heck happened to geophys? This is not Time Team. Wish there was a meh button.
Main thing is three days...at that rate if they where involved in the discovery of the grave of Tutankhamen, that squirrelly Tony fellow would have been yelling about a stone wall, of "found archeology, no idea what it is, but it is archeology" without even finding out what it is.

This one-of-the-last episodes really feels cheap, doesn't it? The credits still list 4 geophysics staff, but almost no geophys was done - why? Why no dendrochronology? No discussions with local historians, almosst no aerial photography, and many of the discussions were awfully vague (the skeleton dated as "pre-castle" - why not cite the actual report?). It's not a terrible episode, but one can really see how much they were trying to save money here.

dendrochronology. on what?
a) you're not always to have lokal historians that can add something concerning the site, or want to appear on national TV.
b) I think lidar is more appropriate here than aerial photography, because of all the trees.
c)Geophys is very useful in most of the episodes, and can be used on a big variety of sites. It's important to establish were to dig, espacially if aerial photography isnt that helpful.
d) Dendrochronology can only be used if you know in beforehand that you will get good preserved wood. It needs very large pieces of wood, and even then the results have been inconclusive multiple times. Better for long-term digs.
e) You can't expect to find and date everything in three days. It's most important to destiguish the chronological order of the artefacts to get a good picture of the site during the time you got.
I think it's pretty good for exploratory archeology. The geophys was pretty useful with the lidar and the survey of the inside of the chapel. Although we didn't get the concrete results of the Carbon-dating, I think the site and its phases was dated quite well, especially considering the extent of the damage the Victorians did. don't see where you could have used dendrochronology here.

We have the same thing here in the US with different dialects. You can tell if someone is from New England, New York/New Jersey, the southern states, etc.

I wondered about the 3 days as well. These 3 day evaluations are a regular archaeological technique. They are meant mostly to determine the extent and age(s) of a site, how well preserved it is, and to gain a general idea what's there and what it might have looked like. Full-scale digs take months, even years. And, yes, these guys have full-time jobs and budget would be a concern.
It creates a framework for the show, i.e., beginning, middle, end. Also, it adds a bit of tension. Will they be able figure it out in time?? Dun, dun, dun, DUN!!!
