How can we connect from visual studio code to hana cloud?
if the database is in cloud do we need to open some firewall rules (whitelist) or there are simpler workaround?

Yes there is an Allowed Connection configuration in HANA Cloud Central. help.sap.com/docs/hana-cloud/sap-hana-cloud-administration-guide/sap-hana-database-connections?locale=en-US

Just use the HANA Database Explorer extension and use the SQL endpoint - port 443 will need to be allowed out from your side. Accepted connections need to be allowed in on the HANA Cloud side - see the URL mentioned in the other answer for that.
