One thing you didn't discuss is that to select those topics, which are the area of your PhD supervisor. So that you can easily get attention of supervisor to complete your degree.

@Ali Baig. Thank you for your comment. Please note that a doctoral student is only accepted under supervision when the area of research is the same for both i.e. supervisor and student. Hence, topic alignment is already in place. However, there are instances, where supervisors accept students with other areas of interest but such practice is not welcomed most often in the west.
