    After working with Scott Henderson’s Video Jazz Fusion Improvisation from 1988 I found this out:
    Look at the melodic minor scale as a Dorian scale with a natural 7.
    In a 251 progression e.g in C with the correspondig minor 251 in Am this means: Raise the C to a C#.
    You get: D melodic minor over Dm7, G lydian b7 over G7, Db altered over Db7 for the tritone sub. In the Am 251 you get B locrian natural 9 over Bm7/b5.
    So you get the 4 main applications for melodic minor just by raising the root of the parental ionian scale.
    Isn’t that amazing?
    According to Scott you can even use D mel minor over the E7 chord (not so common but possible).
    That’s why I call the raised 1 the Magic Note😎.
    Thank you for your great videos!

    Very nice reference video Sandra, thank you. You sound like Joe Pass at the end where you said “Jazz is hard, why complicate it?” Joe said “If it’s too hard I don’t do it. I play something easier.” Of course his version of “too hard” and my version are worlds apart but the concept is there and you seem to grasp it also. You’re great , Sandra.

    hello Sandra and thanks for the tips, my question is what is the term that define scale that are similar...is it parent scales?
    Sorry to ask , i am new to jazz and french speaking, it will surely help me ...jazz or harmony can be overwhelming
    thx 🥰, love all your lessons
    And lastly why dont you do a video of how your learned music, why you got into it and all that jazz, we are very curious and interested...xx

    • @GuitarversumSandraSherman
      @GuitarversumSandraSherman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmmm, I don't know about the scale term. Parent scale is the scale that is patent to its modes. Like C major is the parent scale for D dorian, E phrygian etc.

      Hehe. That happens. Come back to it in a few months. It will be clearer then. It's really easy, but sometimes it takes another time or concept to understand what we learned /heard months ago. Suddenly the light bulb moment is here.

  • @brianp8384

    Hi Sandra, I have a possibly dumb question. I get that Dorian scale is just using C Major notes but starting and ending on D. But it seems like the heart of this lesson is laying the Dm7 arpeggio over the II, IV, V and VII. So why is the D Dorian scale emphasized or important to focus on? Can't we just explain it as using the Dm7 arpeggio (which happens to be the Dorian arpeggio) over those other chords or is there something I am missing?

    • @GuitarversumSandraSherman
      @GuitarversumSandraSherman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In this lesson it's just the arpeggio, true. It's dorian, bc Dm7 is the second scale degree. It's easiest to learn the dorian sclae and then use It's arpeggio (Dm7), all dorian Bebop Lines and everything you know about dorian over the 5th (only if unaltered), the 7th degree (m7b5 chord) and the 4th degree. This way you don't have to learn new Bebop lines, licks etc over each mode, since some are already compatible.

    • @brianp8384
      @brianp8384 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@GuitarversumSandraSherman Thanks, Sandra. So it looks like it is good to be familiar and comfortable both with the Dorian scale and with the arpeggio. Then when playing, you can think of it however you want.

  • @calcal5135
    @calcal5135 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    For years I have been hearing people say that one should avoid the 11th on a dominant chord. Not true. There are great lines that emphasize the 11th.

    • @GuitarversumSandraSherman
      @GuitarversumSandraSherman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can be used as a 9sus4 or 13sus4 chord. Usually we substitute a dominant chord for another one, not a sus chord. The 3rd clashes against the 4. I User it a lot in between other dominant chord, though, but don't focus on it.

  • @arlo2203
    @arlo2203 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can anyone answer these NAGGING questions:
    Does the chord progression determine the mode?
    How much so?
    Can you play a major mode over minor progression??
    PLEASE.
    HELP. ME.

    • @GuitarversumSandraSherman
      @GuitarversumSandraSherman  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are three ways a mode is being used.
      1. The unsettling chord. When your in the second scale degree (like Dm7 in the key of C major) you're playing in dorian in that very moment your chord progression is on the Dm7 chord.
      2. An entire chord progression can be in a mode. If your resolving (and usually your starting point) is on that chord. Ie Dm7 | G7 Vamp wir be D dorian. Although the moment you're laying /soloing over the G7 you're actually in G mixo.
      3. You okay chords, usually triads over a bass oedal note.
      Ie: F/D G/D Am/D C/D is a D dorian chord progression, since all triads and the bass note are from the C major scale, but the bass makes your ear believe these chords are all some sort of Dm chords in the key if C, therefore D Dorian.
      Hope that helps!
      Sandra
