    16/11/20 Update on tires, front tire had done 5500km (2500km as rear) and I went to my bike this morning and it was flat. Still had heaps of tread and would have been good for at least 8000km but I had ran out of sealant and it leaked out of a small cut. The tire had too much sealant on the bead to seat properly so instead of cleaning off caked on sealant, I replaced since it is circuital to have a good tire up front. Also I didn't mention, 2 wraps of rim tape and the setup is a lot easier, I no longer have to use nitrogen, I can just use air compressor. Be sure to replace sealant every 3 - 6 months or otherwise you will be caught out from a tiny puncture, I left mine for a year :) Thanks for support on the Video!

      Really you have to replace the sealant? I always thought it was set and forget. That’s a real pain in the arse mate. Thanks for the heads up.

      @@gabrieljohannson6777 Hey, there are a few brands that promote their sealant lasts the life of the tire, but they don't work that good. But yes, all other sealants magically dry up and they always say to replace in 3 months or so, but I usually leave a lot longer. But you risk being caught out.

      @@gabrieljohannson6777 really depends on local climate conditions too. I’m in a hot troppo area, a lot of the cyclists here have to change/top up their sealant around 4 months. Dries up so fast! Those from cooler places would do 6 or 10 months. But agree with Kurtis, 6 months is a good rule of thumb

    Bike mechanic here. One of your senior guys at the shop showed me a trick for tires that are tricky to seat. Granted you need an air compressor.
    Take the valve core out and instead of using a regular shop inflator, use a needle shaped one. Get the end of it completely over thr valve stem.
    This trick has seated the toughess tires, including fat bike tirees.

    • @KurtisPape
      @KurtisPape  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tip but I already have a 110psi air compressor and using the air gun down the stem still doesn't seat all tires. I needed 500psi with a nitrogen bottle and gauge line to seat these, but what I found was a simple fix, just add an extra layer of rim tape then the air compressor would work. I had to do this recently on my gravel bike, the air compressor wouldn't seat the tires.

    couldn't agree more. Since prior to corona I have done roughly 10000 km on these. Used latex innertubes for a long time, but they bursted at the valve after 1½ years constant use (100% okay) and I suddenly had to turn to tubeless around Christmas. On my Campy Bora WTO with 19mm internal width and Schwalbe blue doc it was complety safe and hazzlefree to install. Beaded with a compressor and Schwalbe soap though emthy valve. Frontwheel is now with Vittoria Corsa Control G+ that is a very similar tyre.

    20 mm internal rim width. Had to use an inner tube to seat it, unseat one side remove the tube, and then use my Topeak blaster pump.
    Brilliant tyre. Replaced Vittoria Terreno Zero. Too many punctures on them that wouldn’t seal.

    • @KurtisPape
      @KurtisPape  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad you could seat it!I intersting method, pirelli instructions actually say use a inner tube to help shape new tire. I now know that 2 - 3 wraps of rim tape makes it a lot easier to seat if you are having problems, so i can now do with air compressor. Still love these tires.
      I only just had my first failure, checked my bike in the morning and my front tire was flat, but it wasn't the tire, it was the rim tape failed. But the tire was too hard to reuse because it had lots of sealant on the bead from trying to seal as the pressure went down. (Sealant is so caked on i can't remove)
      I'm still yet to get the full life of any tire. I've got fresh rim tape on the rear and tire is at 5500km so it might be a first. All my mountain bike tires I have thrown in the bin always have heaps of tread and I usually damage side wall. Then all my road bike tires just get too many cuts.

      It depends... 28mm tires you could occasionally ride some gravel, it's a fairly rough ride even if it's good quality gravel, I don't think you would have to worry about punctures though if you take it easy. If you went up to 35mm size it would be less harsh but still not a full time gravel tire since it doesn't have any tread. Again in terms of puncture protection most road bike tires don't last when you ride gravel but these are definitely fine for occasional gravel from my experience 👍

    Hi mate thanks for the review, I’ve been using these tyres on every bike for a few years and agree with everything you’ve said - I have a question; I’ve just got some new rims, internal is 22mm and I’ve put the 28’s on, tubeless, with some hassle but I’m concerned about them unseating at speed, have you had any arse twitching moments or all good, just a hassle to seat?
    Cheers

    • @KurtisPape
      @KurtisPape  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, I never had any issue with them unseating, when I would hit some corners at 60km/h it would be on the back of my mind they are a loose fit but I never had problems as long as you keep ontop of you pressures. For e.g. I feel like you could roll off the rim at 35 psi in a hard corner. Anyway when I would let all pressure out of the tire it would pop off the bead by itself, adding the extra layer of rim tape seemed to stop this, but this just could mean if you had a catastrophic puncture from 70psi to 0 in a sec, the tire might not protect the rim, but I never worried about this because I never had any blow outs, and the sealant gives you time to slow down. unlike the schawble pro1s which were dangerous and would catastrophicly fail. Anyway I hope this helps :)

    The Cinturato highly rated by Bicycle Rolling Resistance a very credible source but I JUST don't see tubeless on these particular tires which have just about the highest puncture resistance out there :-) . . . with good quality TPU tubes, you have lower all-in weight with no mess no fuss of tubeless whose "advantages" come through only with much more "fragile tires" . . . sure if you run on glass and nails all day long, fine go tubeless but under normal riding conditions tubeless is useless on these great tires :-)

      train seems pretty good so I would highly suggest. My EX9 has been great long term. Took to Canada and it handled Whistler with ease, jumps great and have no problem getting it sideways.
      Im yet to do any major servicing on the bike other than fix creaks along the way which happens with almost every bike. I just found things like taking rear shock out cleaning and greasing points fixed creak and unbolted rear support and cleaned and greased, also just flushed out headset bearings and re-greased as there wasnt much grease from factory. The rear swing arm is reliable and have no issues with it. I did have a 1 off warranty problem with dropper post which I sent back and still wasnt fixed so I just got fox dropper post. Overall the bike rides insane.
      Only weird thing I found which doesnt effect riding is I find it really had to do wheelstands, all other MTBs I can wheel stand with ease but this bike has a real weird balance point which is also a small balance point like its in 1 specific spot.

      Now I'm using it at Hunt Gravel disc with 23mm inner width, and everything works fine...

      @@ary6916 yea that's strange how they designed this tire. So did you set it up? As long as its sets up fine it will be fine. Even though mine are a loose fit, as long as I maintain good pressure above 40psi they are safe. Ive used heaps now and cornered hard on downhills and never had the tire fail, I have lots of trust in it.

      @@KurtisPape Yeah already set up yesterday on tubeless (success on one attempt) but the bike handling feel weird, feels like flat tire - heavy steering) even the psi is maintain 50-60psi, so I change to clincher today and its all good. I'm not sure whether I put too much sealant (around 190ml for two wheels) or just wheels characteristic (35mm deep vs crosswind).

      @@ary6916 I usually do 80ml per wheel. So 190ml combined is fine. My tires don't feel heavy. I swapped from the fastest tire at the time, the schwalbe pro 1 28mm to these and noticed no difference even over 100km rides. So I'm not sure why would feel heavy. Tubeless is tested to have lower rolling resistance and 60psi in 32mm tire is plenty if you are under maybe 85kg

    I'm having the same problem setting up tubeless. What do you recommend using please?

    • @KurtisPape

      Hey, have you got an air compressor? If so try to pump up without valve core in then quickly take air compressor off and put core back in, if done quick enough just then add pressure again. But if too slow it may pop onto bead but pop off again if it quickly hits 0 psi... It's really hard to do but I got the technique down pat.
      The easy way I just found out is more rim tape! I used 25mm gorilla tape which was a little too wide but just fit and i could simply install tire with floor pump. With normal rim tape try 2 or 3 wraps. This has been a tip used for loose fitting mountain bike tires for years. Also watch this video m.th-cam.com/video/mWhlq-ky74s/w-d-xo.html this guy installs tire using straps.

      Oh yea how I was originally doing it way using nitrogen cylinder. This is about 2200 psi but obviously have to regulate lower to maybe 200 psi. This pressure had no problem popping tire onto bead, but doing it a few times actually destroyed my rim tape because it's only rated to 150psi.

    I have a DT Swiss R470, with a 20mm internal rim width, will these tires fit?

    • @KurtisPape
      @KurtisPape  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They would fit, mine are 20.7mm internal so that small .7mm difference could help heaps. They could be hard to set up tubless without air compressor but I would try 1 tire out first, if its hard to seat, replace rimtape with 2 or 3 wraps and the tire mounts a lot easier.

    Also can you fit a water bottle holder on the frame of the ex9?

      Nope, no water bottle mounts.

    I'm never doing a tubeless setup. I'd rather replace inner tubes than having to clean off caked sealant.
