- A true legend! The Magnum XL-200 at Cedar Point didn't just break world records when it opened in 1989 - it shattered them! Standing an amazing 205 feet above the Earth below and cruising at a top speed of 72 mph, this scream machine was the tallest and fastest roller coaster ever created when it debuted in 1989. As impressive as those statistics are, coaster enthusiasts will tell you the element that makes Magnum truly a coaster king is its "airtime!" That feeling of floating over each of the ride's intense hills helps make Magnum one of the greatest coasters of all time.
The Magnum is a traditional "out and back" coaster that features 5,106 feet of track that winds its way over Soak City and along the Lake Erie shoreline, giving riders an unparalleled view of the lake and the Cedar Point skyline. In 2006, the Magnum XL-200 was voted No. 3 in the "Best Steel Roller Coaster in the World" category in a poll conducted by Amusement Today.
In only 18 seasons, Magnum has given more than 36 million guests a ride to remember. In 2006 alone, 1,826,338 guests rode Magnum. Riders must be at least 48 inches tall.
No trip to Cedar Point is complete without a ride on Magnum! You definitely get the most airtime on this one! Millennium, Top Thrill, Raptor, Wicked Twister and the rest are great of course, but this one holds its own among the best!

i live like 2 and a half hours away... went yesterday and magnum was one of my favorites!!! when you are going up the first hill you get such a nice view of lake erie ! its such a fun ride!
The airtime at the end of the ride is just sick!!!! LOVE IT!!!

1989.....4 hour wait at least= Rollar Coaster Heaven!!!!!!.....tallest, scariest coaster in the world and before youtube, the cool thing was that in line you couldnt even see the track until u reached the loading dock because of the angle and the trees.....
Chain lift sounds amazing due to soundcard. Echo and everything. IT reminds me of the real thing.

Ive rode this ride twice now and it is a thrill from start to finish. The steel rails and incredibly long chain make a wonderful sound on your way to the top. Great view and blazing speed over the first drop.
Yesterday, at the end of the day, there was practically no line. I rode this 5 times in one hour. Good fun.
Love this ride; just rode Hulk a bunch of times yesterday (I am at Universal IOA right now). Hulk is impressive -but I LOVE the Magnum XL. Magnum is hard on the neck/back though. Magnum is a blast in the front car right at sunset.
My sister and I got stuck at the top of the hill. :) but after riding The Dragster and Millenium, it was no big deal!
The Magnum is a classic. It may not be the tallest roller coaster in the world (or their park) anymore, but the anticipation it builds on ascent is second to none. The first ride on that baby, when you slowly go up the hill, the ground farther and farther away as you inch toward the peak...then you can see no track at all, feeling as though you are simply suspended in the air. Then, by the time you see the track again you're blasting your way down..pitch perfect.
There are bigger, taller and faster coasters but Magnum remains a classic thrill. It was the first coaster I felt totally exposed on the entire ride. You feel like you're sitting right on top of the car and the outside loop is amazing because the track is held by single support columns. It's visually alarming and you can feel the track flex as the train circles the loop. If you get to the Point early bust it to the back of the park as lines are generally short until after noon.
this ride has some serious whiplash.

On every small air time hill inwas like ow ow ow ow ow on very hill. Great ride one of my favorites
Folks this was the original 200 foot roller coaster. The concept was started in the late 70s for this but it took nearly 5 years to develop the calculus for something this size(100-150 feet was considered HUGE in Magnums day - let alone 200).
It really shows on the hills - basically straight sections joined by short curves(short radius for you mathoids). Going from a straight section up into a fixed-radius curve will do it to your knees! Compare to the hills on the new Diamondback.

So cool to see these pov videos from the 20th century. If you notice in this video, Millennium Force and Dragster are not in the picture. And if I'm judging it right, I don't think Mantis is even here yet. Wow! Cool.
This is from 1989 and Mantis was built in 1996, Millenium Force in 2000 and Dragster in 2003.
My best friend rode this with her cousin and they were yelling as soon as they got to the top "WE ARE GOING TO DIE!" It's so funny because her Mom picked the Magnum as a practice ride and that hill is only 200 ft tall and they loved Millennium Force!
I can't believe all the people that complain that this ride hurt them...clearly they've never ridden Beast or Son of Beast...or even Mean Streak.
I'm 7'1" and most coasters cause me pain since I gotta jam myself in...I even left one with an imprint of a phillips head bolt in my knee this summer...but they're always worth it.

While watching this I could feel my body moving up and down on the hills hahahahaha oh my god. I wish it was that silent in the tunnels when I rode it.
I rode this for the first time on Saturday, and I litteraly almost shit myself, as this was the highest roller coaster I have so far ridden. It was so much god damn fun. Maybe one day I could do Millenium Force.

I just experienced this coaster yesterday for the first time. o.O Omg. Most of the time we were going so fast that I COULDN'T scream. Literally. Probably because the breath was just sucked right outta me.

Man. I love this ride but I remember the bar hurt the top of my legs from all the air time! XD And my friend's phone literally flew out of her pocket and exploded and hit some of the people behind her. It was kinda funny when the lady directly behind us came up to us and was like, "Is this yours?" Handing us a piece of my friend's phone. The only piece that was ever recovered.
Bring the tunnel effects back! Lights, smoke, sounds...
This ride was rough for a steel coaster, not that i was complaining but it was noticable.
The lift hill on this baby takes FOREVER...but still awesome ride
I just noticed that they moved the trims from the top of the second airtime hill to at the bottom after it and that they replaced the track on the turn around with track that has a thicker spine.

when I went on this last month, I was with my youth group and one of the leaders convinced us all it was a baby ride! XD
@dcs290 there are wheels on top, on the insides and underneath. At one time there where steel bars underneath to keep it from lifting off the track.

Magnum is what is known as a "hypercoaster" (any coaster with a chain lift taller then 200 feet. Millennium is known as a "gigicoaster" (any coaster with a chain lift taller then 300 feet)
This ride, is nothing compared to the Millenium force. People are like "ohmygurd I rode this in first grade and I'm scared!!" I rode this the first time I went there, while I was still afraid of heights and this ride was amazing to me, not scary.

I rode it as part of a band trip (we played at Cedar Point). At about 1:10 (give or take is the point where your mind starts thinking: "WE'RE GOING TO DIE!!!" Absolutely thrilling! Then you have 1:42 that catches you totally off gaurd. It was great!

I was tall enough to ride this thing when I visited in 2013 with my grandparents, but it was raining, so I couldn’t ride it. );
If you can't make it to Sandusky, Steel Force at Dorney in Allentown PA is very similar, in fact the height and length are nearly the same.
Soo there could be about 7 of us going my friend Michael a guy from work and his kids soo we will see!! Cedar point is awesome!!!
This was like the second roller coaster I was ever on and I was like freaking out because it took forever to get over the hill. lol

When i got on here before the ride started some dude was yelling ''FINAL DESTIONATION!!!!!" i fucked peed my pants....
its around halloween time and they have dressed up people come out ant night and follow you and scare you and they have haunted houses. but its so cool becasue its for little kids during the day but they stay open later so its scarier
@Freakmills72 No they were thinking about it because it was becoming a hassel to repair and take care of, but they decided not to because it was a large attraction.

Oh god... I rode this for the first time when I went this summer. Great coaster- but it seriously sucked the air right out of my lungs. I could imagine what the Millenium Force would be like after riding this- and I don't know if I would be able to handle it. o.o

@singingrosedbroadway you will be fine! the only scary part is the hill up. i was scared to death to ride it. i rode it, and i didnt look down at all. just straight forward. got to the top, put my hands up, and had a blast! then i rode it again, and i felt more comfortable and started looking at the things around the ride! haha. you will be fine. you'll feel invincible after you ride it, trust me!(:
I first rode the Magnum when I was in 1st grade... I'm still scared of it!
@F4WQ but it increases suspense and it makes yor friends who r afraid of the ride freak the hell out
@Lsivanandan It can be a little shaky, but not too bad in my opinion. I always try to make sure my seat belt is tighter than my lapbar, so it's more comfortable over the airtime hills at the end.
@stangsaleens7 well rides liek the millenium force clam over the sides and on the bottom so its more secure on the track but this one is just clamped on the sides so its looser on the tracks witch causes it to move around allot more

I was just on this over the past weekend. I must say out of all the coasters I've ridden, this one actually scares me; the helix feels like you are about to dumped out of train...nevertheless I luv it!
They just don't make rides like they used to. Nothing better than 200+ feet of slowly clicking your way to the top. Although modern rides are more intense and smoother, they need to go back to using the obnoxiously loud chain lifts.

@singingrosedbroadway thats how i felt until i rode it last year. i was scared out of my mind, and almost crying because the wait is so short! lol. but i say you should ride it and put your hands up cause its a blast! its my 2nd favorite ride there!(:
its a nice ride but going to the top is hell man i hate it wen it takes forev to get to the top.... but i still like it
@austinman1995 This ride isnt the best like millennium force and top thrill, but the line wait for this ride sure as hells gives this ride alot of value for something to wait for... it took me a hour to wait in line to ride the millennium force, and that was when the park opened at 10, the top thrill dragster was ever longer, about a hour and a half but i rode that later on in the day. The magnum took only 30mins to wait in line, so to me the ride was totally worth it.
