I've been doing it wrongly and taking forever. That feeling of not being sure, is agonizing. I've followed your tips and come back to thank you. 👍 Thank you.
I'm so dumb.. all this time I've been wondering why it's so much harder to edge the side of my yard that's against my neighbor's driveway. This video made me realize that it's because I'm going against the rotation of the string.
Good stuff man, one thing about edging with a string trimmer is remembering to control where debris are being slung by either walking in the grass forward or on the sidewalk backwards to avoid flicking a rock into someones window. I find it to be much more stable to hold onto the shaft of the trimmer rather than the loop handle itself especially in st Augustine turf.
Thank you for sharing these tips! Jason, I had never observed anyone edging with a string trimmer until discovering your channel years ago. Saves me so much time now! Great work gentlemen
Jason, just wanted to add a couple of thoughts. I never used to use a guard, but after taking out three car windows, I changed my habit. I just learned to use the trimmer with the guard on it. I can see my object decently, and almost no more windows. I took out my truck window with the guard on, 25 ft away. But so far no more customer windows 🙂 Secondly, on my first edging of the year, I pull out my hard blade edger, run that on my edges, and the rest of the year, I use my string trimmer to maintain the edge. Thanks Jason! 😊
You guys are absolute dolls! Great video! Very clear and I am supposed to teach my nephew to edge and I have never done it or seen it done. I feel confident now. Taking your tips to work tomorrow. I was scared and now I’m not. Simple as that! Thank you so much!
Needed this video for my guys that have a hard time do it. It’s pretty hard for me to teach it because I do it a different way along with keep the guard on.
Thank you. I am still learning to use mine. I had a worx but had alot of trouble with line feed. I just recently got an EGO battery trimmer. Again, I am still getting the hang of using it. I have the guard on. I am going to remove it and see if my skills improve. Thanks again for your tips and video.
I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use th-cam.com/users/postUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.
Guys much appreciated. I’m a “man” that knows d$&@ck about yard maintenance. Been winging it but you helped 100%. I’m about to put into practice right now!!!!
Good tutorial. I'm not a professional landscaper or lawncare guy, but one thing that I do, whether I'm using a hard edger or a string trimmer, is mow the grass as low as my mower will go about 2-3" past the edge of the sidewalk (typically, a tire-width), driveway, etc. If you notice, the grass in the video was very short.
It takes some getting used to, but in my opinion you can establish a hard edge or starting point with a stick edger, and then clean out the groove easier with a string trimmer. My opinion is that you will always get a straighter edge with a stick, but a cleaner edge with a string trimmer. I only use a stick edger on new properties or corner lots with sidewalks.
I have used the Shakespeare yellow trimmer cutters and the grey metal edge cutters for last 4 years over string. The method you use is what works best for them.
8:24 Demonstrator: "I'm just gonna trim a lil bit and then I'm gone flip and show you how fast I can go back and forth from one to the other." (20 secs later) 8:43 Cameraman: "AHH!!". Demonstrator: (Signal to stop what TF I'm doing and start talking again) LOL
Thanks for the tips guys, I've been helping out my disabled neighbour and found that my line keeps going inside my fast bump feeder because I don't bump it in time as it gets too short. My trimmer rotates clockwise so it kicks up debris towards me, I might remove the guard as I have safety glasses. My recommended guage is 2.4mm but I might try something thicker just for edging as it's about 2 inches thick. 👋 Thanks!
I cut the edge going backwards taking my time, it cleans out the edge plus leaves a clean surface away from the edge and the cavity next to the sidewalk is clean with no debris and easy to sweep.
Would like to see a demo with guards installed. I’ve seen senseless injuries that simple tool guards would have prevented. Safety is more important than trimmed grass. The guard is needed when something unexpected happens, never when that will be.
I almost forgot Jason was using the husqvarna trimmer. I was like why is he cutting against the grain in the last part of the video? and then I realized he was using the clockwise head lol
NO. Sidewalks are generally 3 - 3½ inches thick and heavy. Occasionally sinking can occur if watering extensively, filling the edged crevice, causes an area of non compacted soil to condense. Roots are the #1 cause of uplifting.
I liked this. But I was under the impression that you cannot use gas powered weed eaters upside down? Do you have some kind of special brand that allows for this or can I do this with my Ryobi 2 stroke? I know it's not the best brand but it's what I've got for now?
I dont know if my theory is correct or not but here it goes. You know how you're suppose to cut in the direction the head is spinning? Well, when the head is placed perellel to the ground (how you normally would use a string trimmer), the string cuts in thw direction it spins. So if you have a anti-clockwise the the side that would normally cut is now in the air so in a way to spinning force of head is pushing to the right instead of the left so you know gotta walk backward. I saw this other video and it confused me cus the guy used an clockwise as was walking in the opposite direction the head was spinning so made me think if its the same thing as when the head is parellel to the ground.
If they’re airpod pro 2 earbuds, they work great for noise cancellation. You just have to be sure to use the right sized silicone tip that they come with, and have the noise cancellation settings on when they’re in your ears. I use them and they work great at noise cancellation when working on my lawn.
Why don't they make a string guard of clear plastic? I'm gonna make a hole at the line of sight just big enough to see my edge in my stupid black guard. great advice, thanks.
I don't think anyone will answer this, but one thing I always wonder when I see videos like this is, does it make a difference that I'm left-handed? Every video I've ever seen offering tips shows right-handed people, whereas my left hand is the one on the trigger. I keep wondering if that would make any difference. Maybe someone can help me out. Regardless, this was an extremely helpful video. Thank you.
@@chancesmalley6708 LOL, I love the Swamp Thing reference. I’m a woman and l enjoy mowing my lawn and now l just wanna learn to use a weed eater, just bought it from Home Depot and never used it, still in the box
The Splash Guard is very important to that machine it protects you from hurting you self with stones and also from damaging the Gear box if the trimmer line comes out long the Guard with a blade also cuts the trimmer line to the correct size so that it won’t be heavy for the gear case
With a 2 stroke weed eater, turning it upside down seems OK, but I just don't feel right turning my 4 stroke weed eater upside down, I can imagine engine oil lubrication issues. After all, 2 strokes have the oil mixed in the fuel. Oh, and adding a little lube in the head plug from time to time is a good thing, too. If not enough lube, the head gets hot, and bad juju ensues...

I was watching my Uncle edge his yard and if I didint have my sun glasses on I would have lost my eye
This. This almost happened to me last summer. I had to sit down for a moment and collect myself after that one. Never again.
I had something hit my glasses today, would have been very bad if I wasn’t wearing any

Great informative video! Another benefit of acquiring this skill is saving money on an edger when you already have a string trimmer.
