  • Boston has quietly changed their offensive process after Miami's 19 steals in Game 3. This film room study details exactly what adjustments Coach Ime Udoka and the Celtics have made in the 2022 Eastern Conference Finals to counter the Heat's swarming playoff defense, led by Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo.

Celtic fan here who has watched the entire season: the ugly and the beautiful moments. Udoka wants this team running with two key concepts in mind: pace and decisiveness. When the offense is humming, our actions are swift, and decisions are made within 1.5 seconds. Even when the J's iso up it's usually when they decide to hunt mismatches. Credit to both Udoka and the coaching staff to get great individual talents to buy into the offense and provide counters in-game and to the players for embracing it.

They do not have any way to contain both tatum and brown at the same time with their guards being undersized or defensively challenged. Bam has to challenge, which allows the celtics to dunk or get the rebound. This already happens with the zone but atleast with the zone the heat have a chance to cause a turnover. Also just as big an issue for the heat is their offense. They almost cant drive at all and have terrible spacing issues, tending to bunch players together towards the sides of the court. During the bubble they would screen away from the ball so it would allow passes to the side or top, which in turn opens up the drive. But now they are super stationary and ball watch.

To be fair to them, last game they nearly had the worst 3 point shooting percentage in NBA playoff history on 30+ attempts or something like that. It's a make or miss league. But if they were shooting even 30% on their 3's (I'll concede Boston's been somewhat cold too, but the Heat have been HISTORICALLY cold, after leading the league in 3 point % this season), some of these games wouldn't have been even close. Heat is great defensively. However, their offense needs a change. Aside from Butler, they don't have reliable scorers - consistent shooters that can bring on their A games even against defenses like Celtic's.
This series has been a chess match of defense. A Celtics-Warriors final would be a battle of great offense vs great defense. The only thing is, Warriors can defend well too. So I'm leaning towards the Warriors especially if Iguodala and Payton come back just in time to reinforce their defense.

Jimmy Butler’s COMBINED stats over his last two games, Game 4 & 5 of the ECF:
    🔥 19 PTS
    🗑 7/32 FGM - 21.8 FG%
Miami is 0-2 in those games & now trail Boston, 3-2 😬Lowry really had 0 points, 0 assists and 1 rebound in 25 minutes ..he was just out there running. The Miami Heat's backcourt struggled to find their rhythm in Game 5.

The ability to run hybrid zoning massively helps the team to be in better position to help each other.

@@pittbos2567 10-15 pts lesser becauss theres ALOT MORE 3pt shooting and the pace was alot faster.
Back in bulls( gold standard in 90s) day, they focused on getting a shot as close to the basket as possible. Ideally the paint. They would pass up on open 3s, going under screen etc using the most out of 24 sec.
Nowadays by gsw(kd) gold standard, as long as its open. You take it.
And you have alot more and higher quality shooters.
Which increased the pace, in same amount of time, less time were used for team to take a shot which meant overall more shots were taken.

When the zone was reinstated the avg score went up by .7 then dipped by point .4 the year after that. And the 3 point shot only makes sense if teams avg 10-15 more makes per game. BTW GSW avg 14.2 and they are obviously higher than the avg... so 🧢. Not knocking hybrid defense, just your silly example of MJ complaining about zones like he had nothing better to worry about.

So the answer is almost always movement and this is why the Warriors stay on top. It would be very nice to see what kind of adjustments Heat can do against the Celtics, as they continue to play their defensive style. Warriors are the only team I have see so far playing multiple complex defensive schemes throughout a game and have multiple answers against offenses that change.

Breakdown is great, but I think Heat's main problem is a lack of offense (I would love to see your vid on Timelord's importance for that reason). Partially caused by Celtics limiting turnovers last 2 games. Heat was never a great team in Halfcourt against rim protection-heavy defense, such as healthy Celtics.

The Heat played a great deal of CLUTCH and GRAB defense to compensate for their deficiencies in their talent gap with the Celtics.
Their Great Coach Erik Spoelstra defensive schemes worked great with the clutch and grab scheme since the refs don’t call fouls the same way they do during the regular season.
However, Celtics coach Ime Udoka made the necessary adjustments to counter that, and it worked until the last 2 minutes of the game 7.
Most people forget that even if Jimmy Butler made the 3 pointer, the Celtics had more than 15 seconds to take back the lead similar to game one against the Nets. (I know, I know, the Heat are not the Nets! Keep lying to yourselves).
Get excited Celtics Nation. Onto Bay Area on Thursday.
