    I wonder if I could make an actual usable ring from a sheep bone. Recomendations? Femur? Or any round bone would work?

    It would’ve been good to know what tools the seamen used. I imagine that only the ship's carpenter would have files etc and he wouldn’t lend them to anyone. No wet & dry - so how did they do it all?

      Much of it was done simply by scratching the design into the bone or tooth, and they used sailmakers' and other needles, followed by lamp black to show the design up - Rob
