  • Simon Ashton is the current Dace record holder since 2002. Having fished for nearly everything that swims since with great results, he has only recently returned to the rivers trotting for his old friend -the dace! In this video we head up north to the Ribble, where Simon fishes for some clonkers, with plenty of tactics and watercraft included!

    The Ribble likely held record dace back in the mid 1980s. It was not unusual to catch the odd dace around the LB mark with the average size of dace catches very high. The river has gone though a lot of changes over the years but the potential is growing again for a record dace from the Ribble. Right time of year and correct area of the lower river that once produced those bigger dace could be hold a new record in the next few years!

    Had some amazing Dace in my area in the 80's on a local river. Unfortunately long gone due to abstraction, predation and pollution. Still catch the odd one around the half pound but didn't realise how blessed we were back then

    Met a Bailiff on a small trib river that told me the dace migrate during the winter across the Ribble estuary and shoal up in the tidal reaches. If that's the case there must be some serious fish amongst them.

    My beloved River Ribble is still recovering from a catastrophic cormorant event in the early 90s.
    The roach, and dace populations look strong, even though the 2lb+ roach are not as common as they once were.
    My question is, do the huge weights of chub, from yesteryear, still get caught?

    • @deathfromabove592
      @deathfromabove592 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Had decent weights of chublets 12oz to 1lb 8oz in the winter last couple of seasons on the tidal stretch .. so the future looks good fingers crossed.
      However the shoals of fish in the 2 to 5lb class are few and far between now sadly for various reasons.. it definetly holds dace to record proportions but most people dont weigh them.. always get a few nudging a pound in the winter.

    • @pleasantville4529
      @pleasantville4529 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@deathfromabove592 Thanks for the reply.
      As I'm sure you know, there were potential huge catches of chub on the ribble in the pre cormorant years.
      The m6 bridge, or upstream of the bridge at Walton le Dale, or countless other areas, we're capable of throwing up 200lb bags of chub every winter.
      That was before the (deathfromabove) days.
      Good to see the Ribble getting back to its best.
      I just hope the cormorants don't become an issue again.

    • @deathfromabove592
      @deathfromabove592 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@pleasantville4529 I watched anglers fill a keepnet by dinner time, and fill it again before dusk under the m6 bridge in times gone by.. it was that prolific for chub in the winter.
      We used to cycle down as kids and just watch.. great times on a great river.. tight lines mate.

    • @pleasantville4529
      @pleasantville4529 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@deathfromabove592 I would love to know if those chub shoals still turn up in January and stay until the end of the season?
      I got to fish there on one occasion, and my mate filled his net with so many chub, that the bottom three rings of his net broke, and all that was before midday.
      It rained all morning, and the wash off from the m6 was the most foul stinking pollution I have ever witnessed.

      (1980's-90's) anglers sat and waited until the anglers below ran out of bait, then slid in....that area gets some serious poacher pressure now...@@deathfromabove592

    Until the December 1968 BRFC record clear-out the dace record was 1-8-5 from the Hampshire Avon and there were other dace recorded over 1-6-0 but the BRFC made no real effort to trace these old catches which were probably in glass cases. Some records back then were ludicrous, the 7-2-0 grayling, the 4-8-0 silver bream and the 10-8-0 chub but others needed more thorough investigation. One example, the Aylmer Tryon barbel of 14-6-0 was eventually re-instated though not through the efforts of the BRFC. Two records that should have been looked at properly were the dace and the seatrout. In the interim, post 1968, some records were much lower than should have been the case - the silver bream was 15oz - the bar had been set at 2lb, then 1-8, the 1lb but finally got to a sensible level of over 3lbs.
