The Mamas and the Papas shared this cover on their Instagram back when Angelina published it. Having a cover recognized and praised by the original artist says a lot about how good it is. For me, the mind blowing part about this one is how the unique arrangement (done by a 12 year old) gives the song a whole different feel than the original. They are basically two different songs with the same lyrics. ...and nothing against the original, but if I listen to them both back to back, I prefer this one.
[Rusty Shackleford] Don't quite know who is representing the "Mamas & Papas" now but it sure ain't them. "California Dreamin'" was a huge hit and the first hit of the "Mamas & Papas" in the early 60's. To say the "Mamas & Papas" shared this cover on their instagram is not quite possible because all of the members in that group have passed away except for Michelle Phillips maybe (no, I did not look it up before posting this).
For me music is not about preference of one over the other. If I like them both then I add both too my collection and I do like both.

Yes I am fully aware that _some_ of the members of the band have died, nevertheless.... There is an official (verified) Insta account for the band.... and "they" are the ones that posted it. It is similar to when "Queen" tweeted about how great her cover of Bohemian Rhapsody was.... I didn't think all the members were huddled around a phone making the tweet.... and I am fully aware that freddie is no longer with us. ;)
I was simply relaying the facts.... 1) The Mamas and the Pappas Instagram account posted this video. 2) I would rather listen to Angelina sing the song.
As for not knowing anything about music other than Angelina's... I could go on for hours about Pink Floyd, Metallica, Beastie Boys, Amy Winehouse... That's just the short list, but it should make it obvious that I am not limited in my tastes ;)

When Angelina makes a song her own she owns it. She has an uncanny ability to rearrange songs to suit her desire to sing them the way she hears them in her mind.

12 years old here, and look what she does to this classic song. Slows it down, modifies the notes, and gives it a bluesie, jazz vibe. She is simply amazing. This is a MASTERPIECE!! 10+ I'm always amazed at how you allow your expectations (original song; stupid 8-ball, etc.) to influence your judgment. And yet you admire the fact that she modifies her performances to "make [them] her own". Do you see the inconsistency there? Anyway, her vocal was absolutely terrific! But she does that all the time. The amazing thing here is the rearrangement of another classic song into something quite different, and for many, even better. And she does that at 12. What a fantastic talent!!
I'm a big Angelina fan . An example is the worst vocal I hear is Diana Ankudinova. , and it sounds like she's "obsessed" with something. But this is me and my opinion, because there is no doubt that she must have a tremendous talent based on her popularity! So here it is probably only me who is in the minority.

I love hearing her just sing...i hope when she is finally allowed to sign a record deal they understand her voice is the emphasis and not overproduced around her. Between her and Diana Ankudinova a wellspring of young talent is reaching out like, Daneliya Tuleshova from Kazakhstan, another girl that been headed on the same trajectory at age 13 now I think. I love Angelina's ending ending it made me laugh, too cute. .

Angelina sang it the way the Mamas and the Papas should have. It a lament, a sad song of missing home.
She interpreted the lyrics perfectly, this is not a summer chirpy song, it’s a song of melancholia, of longing for home and warmth , I now for the time understand it.

A generic question I have been meaning to ask for a long time. When we click 'like' here or on any reactor video, are we saying we like the performance or the reactors response, or both. I have liked many, but for different reasons.Sometimes I 'liked' only because of the performance, not because of the reactor commentary. This is more often the case for me. Sometimes it is because I liked both. Will someone please advise me on this?
Although I have almost unconditional love for all things Angelina, and I generally like your commentary, Maunalee, I wasn't dazzled by either of you today, but for some reason, gave it a like anyway. Go figure!
Well, that's the problem, isn't it. There is no set criterion to determine what "like" or "dislike" means. So people hit those, or they don't, for different reasons. Which means it really doesn't tell us much. Some people say, well I like Angelina, so I'm always going to hit "like". Others feel they are evaluating the reactor, and that's how they make their judgement. While others say, well I like Angelina, but the reactor is crap, so I'm not going to do anything. Still others come to the site for the sole purpose of hitting "dislike", because they think it will help to promote some other singer they are a fan of. So in research lexicon we would say that it is both invalid (we really don't know what it is measuring), and unreliable (it's very inconsistent). So I wouldn't read much into it.
@@wajj1842 William - thanks for taking the time to respond. I watch reactor videos mainly to find gratification/affirmation when others appreciate a performer as much as I do. Also, to feel a sense of comradery and kinship of a sort with them, especially people from around the globe and of different cultures. Kind of corny, I guess. Don’t tell any Trump voters, as to them I should be continually chanting USA, USA!
A hand full of reactors I find either interesting or insightful in some way. The vast majority, however, seem insipid and boring. Of course, I am an old guy, so I am not vested in any way with current pop culture, beyond a small subset of music. Nevertheless, I still find it hard to believe all this crap has been monetized.

Angelina brought this song to entirelly different dimension.
What I love the most about this rendition and I am sure you should too, is that she adds a lot of Middle Eastern feeling to it, all those "arabescos" classical of Spaniard Music (Strong Moorish influence) made this a totally new version of the song without losing it's original feeling. The guitarist is trained classical guitarist from Spain, I wouldn't put it past him to have influenced the style of the song. I don't need the big note, I need the feeling and originality of the song. And this was clearly all that and then some. I enjoy your reactions a ton, and normally agree with you. Though, as I have said before, I think you could revise the metric system of your ratings, as not every song, not even Angelina's, are a ten or nine and a half, but when you do give it, it loses value when there does not appear to be a true scale for what is 1 or 3 or 5 or 7 or 8, or 10... maybe define the scale by indicating what kind of song makes something a ten. I think a nine and a half is a great score, but is it really that when compared to even her other songs? Give a clear and relatable scale, so then an 8 is a "very good" not great or an excellent or absolute genius, and a 5 is a good song, but would not make my favorites list, or a one... I absolutely hate it it, but someone must like it, so I will give it a score. If you are consistent in your rating, you should never have to apologize to anyone for your personal evaluation of a song. Maybe a goose-bump rating, LOL, that was a a ten goose-bump song, or it was a dead fish skin rating... I don't know. But you be you, I personally come back because I think you have a great perspective.

The only detriment to her singing this is the original has many alternating harmonies.so it's beautiful but not as rich due to the lack of varied harmony.
On that note, wouldn’t it be amazing if she did overlays with her voice to create the harmonies like the Carpenters and Marvin Gaye did with so many great songs of theirs. That would be epic! I’m surprised she hasn’t done that, or maybe hasn’t thought of it yet? I hope she does.

This show Angelinas genious and great musical mind, I think. Even the Mamas and The Papas gave their praice to Angelinas rendition to their classic iconic song.

John Cormack Jollyo is referring to the The Mamas and The Papas official band site giving their nod of approval and praise to Angelina’s version of the song. Although Michelle Phillips is the only survivor member, she is still speaking on the behalf of the whole band.
David Touma , that does not change what I commented on. The fourth member Michelle has zero involvement in the day to day management of the web site. She divorced herself of both John and the band over very messy life events. Any comment from their management team is OK, but is not from any of the original band members. Praise from a non-existing band is non-existent. Praise from from Michelle (born as Holly) should be stated as praise from Michelle, not the whole band. There is no current touring version of the band and has not been for some time, if he had said praise from the Mamas and Papas management team, then well fine. But praise from people that doe not exist anymore - please.

I enjoy her excellent singing and voice, however, I’m wondering if she ever does an upbeat version of a song where you see the emotion of joy and happiness in her voice? Not that she has to but just wondering if any exist. If so please let me know what they are. I haven’t heard that much from her so I don’t know, but so far everything I’ve heard has been a slowed down, melancholic take where the focus is on her vocal abilities in a kind of sad setting. Like you, Maunalee, I was hoping for it here, as I think in the original the idea of going to California during the winter was an exciting one for the singer.

How about Here Comes the Sun or When Your Smiling? Other than that I would only say, not to worry. Considering Angelina's age, future, family and natural beauty, I expect an emotional tsunami, overflowing with love and happiness to come bursting from her heart which she will no doubt express through her music. The young lady has been singing with more emotion than many of us have ever heard. Wait until she falls in love, has her first crush, puts shoes on a million children or walks on water. Just a few more years.
Bill Michealoff Bill Michealoff I don’t know how old you are but in the “old days” there use to be, what was called “torch singers” (I think). Anyway, I often think of that when I hear Angelina sing. It is rare that amount of emotion can be conveyed with a song. Many try and try very hard and actually do a very good job but they have to try to do it....they have to act. Angelina has the very rare gift of not only having a voice that is technically versatile, unique and has a boundless potential to be close to perfection. To top all of that off, the heart of any song, intended or unfounded will naturally surface and explode with a quiet precision that comes from any one of Angelina’s heart strings to fill our souls. No one of this generation and touch her. No one is a “torch singer” likened to what was once long ago. It is just so exciting to watch her grow and develop. I simply cannot imagine what she will be like in another 10 years. I know one thing for sure though, I am going to love the journey!

Before listening to your review, I just want to say that I liked it. The only thing missing really was the harmony in the refrain. She needs someone to complete that stuff in her songs. But I can live with it without as well. Nice interpretation!

So I am guessing that Angelina’s cover of this song was not the way that you would have ended it if you were doing it, right? So, out of 2 -3 minutes of singing a song that has been rearranged and performed without any real equipment gets a 9.5 because of the one word. You just seem to be getting really critical of Angelina’s songs. Remember this is a ,just turned 14 year old girl doing all of this. Are you even beginning to take that into consideration? For me, a 14 year old doing what Angelina did with the arrangement and then her performance...knocks it out of the park for me. Being totally objective Angelina is nothing short of a 10. If you add personal taste into your review....well then it is another ball game.

That is closer to a duplication rather than an interpretation and an entirely personal opinion on what Maunalee wanted Angelina to sing the last word.
This was Angelina’s interpretation.....not a remake or an exact copy which is what a cover is all about and she did not see the need to “belt” it. Her personal choice for what her vision of the song.
So, I would guess that the 9.5 is based on Angelina’s interpretation on ending it on how she interpreted and decided sang that last word.
O.K. So be it.
My point is that a phenomenal artist with a world class voice that has a rare gift...Dimash is an Artist that I personally do not care for. Even though he calls it “A cover” I don’t like what he does to the “whole” song by wandering off into different voices/octaves that come out of nowhere. Vocal gymnastics, that totally take away integrity from the original. It is as if the artist is more interested in showing off his “vocal gymnastics” by jumping many octaves than keeping the integrity of what the composer and original artist created. Angelina makes so many of the covers “her own” but she still keeps the integrity of the song.....always. This is what makes her so special and honourable. We all have our personal opinions but I base mine on more of what the artist does as a whole rather than the volume of a word here or there.
I too was kinda missing that strong climax the first time I listened to this recording, but after a while Angelina's soft smooth rendition has come to grow on me and now it's perfect just the way it is.
The way she experiments with her voice and all it's possibilities is one of the most amazing things about Angelina. Sometimes I have to hear her version of a song a couple of times to clear expectations I might have from the original. It's something I have to adjust to because she always makes it hers, usually makes it better and always leaves you wanting more.
I was never a lover for Reaction Channels. But looking at some I saw more believable ( reactors) No jumping up and down. And all those reactions that I know, or think is fake. I just watch now for subtle things. Movements. Facial things. Eyebrows, eyes Twitches, and when those things happens.
I really love this. I was never crazy about the Mamas and the Papas version, but as usual Angelina gives new life to an old song. Ivan is so good, and obviously enjoys playing for her.

I didn’t say she missed a note as in she got off key. I just said I missed hearing the loud climactic part of the song like the original has. My channel is about music reviews, not just me sitting and listening to a song. I critique every song in this way. Not really sure why a 9.5 is considered bad lol!

When Angelina was 11-12 years old, her mother explained in an interview that only Angelina chooses the songs she sings and in the end only sings the songs as she imagines. Maybe it's also a reason why Angelina has her own record label, ANGELINA JORDAN INC. That's why I'm a huge Angelina fan.
I knew she chooses her own material, but I had NO IDEA that she had her very own label! OMG! She'll be a multimillionaire before she's eighteen!

I can very well imagine that Angelina has received many lucrative offers, that there are more resources available for marketing her music and person. This enables Angelina to control herself and does not depend on the music industry. Many artists have already destroyed these through exploitation

Sorry, I have to say this. It seems that every time Maunalee does not give a 10 to an Angelina Jordan song a lot of her fans attack her personally for it, even if she gives it a 9.5 as with this song, which in my opinion was very generous. Not everything Angelina Jordan does is perfect. If you think it is it means you have things to learn in life, just as Angelina does. So stop showing your ignorance by bullying Maunalee, show her the respect she deserves. She obviously does know more about music then you do. Broaden your musical horizon and listen to more kinds of music.
Angelina Jordan is VERY good and talented for such a young girl. She is especially good in blues and jazz songs. But even she has her limitations. This song is not her style, the original is much better. There is nothing wrong with that, she IS broadening her musical horizon. Part of that is to get to know what you can and cannot do. Her voice and arrangements are good enough so that even a "bad" cover for her standards is still a good song, hence the 9.5, but she has done much better with other styles of songs. Once she has grown more and is older and has experienced life she will be a stunning singer and I can't wait for that.

A number of Angelina's "fans" appearing to be suffering from isolation fatigue as of late. It is the only reason I can think of for the obnoxious comments creeping in when a reactor fails to 100% gush and fawn. Thin skinned bunch.
One of the things I wonder about regarding AJ is her changing the lyrics of classic old songs. Her spoken English is excellent, so it's hard to imagine that she doesn't know the difference. None of this has anything to do with the quality of singing, which remains superb. I also wonder about the posters who pick at your reactions, ML. Do they not understand that everyone has their own grading scale and yours and mine aren't going to line up perfectly? Do those persons think that they are the authority on AJ and anyone whose reaction is different is WRONG?
Hi Chris. Are you saying that by changing the lyrics she is doing something wrong? Also, if ML (or any other reactor) "picks" at Angelina's performance (or any other singer), don't we have the right to "pick" at her reasons? No has the right to be rude or disrespectful, and she can and should, block those people. But we do have the right to disagree and say why---don't we?

You're closing in on some of her absolute best stuff i.m.o With this one. This is the kind of style where she is so out of everybody else's league, that it can't be much fun for the others.
When she brings it a bit Down, slows it a bit (or drags it as Maunalee and her mom would say….:-), just her and Ivan on the guitar - perfectly fulfilling and following her lead.

I've been waiting for you to react to this song, and your teary-eyed expression says it all :) This is a very moody rendition of this iconic song that's a far cry from The Mamas and The Papas' original. A good reference point to compare is perhaps Jose Feliciano's version that was featured in the film "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood". I found Angelina's cover far more touching than other versions done by such famous artists as Bobby Womack or Sia.
In my opinion (you know what they say about opinions) she could sing the thesaurus and it would make me eye moist. Beautiful rendition although I also like the high note of the song...it’s Angelina, she makes it her own so the sin is forgiven 😄.
I think Angelina Jordan is quite a phenomenon however I would love to see her increase her vocal style so that listening to her renditions of songs like this don't all sound the same. The only variances she offered with this song were an increased tempo and some extra ornamentation, which still sounds to me too much like everything else she has done. She is becoming quite pigeon-holed. I would never buy an entire album of her music since it would all be pretty much the same thing for 10 tracks.
In my opinion Angelina changed this song to a mediterranean ballad, i thought you would see it that way, as you have Persian roots. Guess it's just me. Stay safe.

Why do people flock to a TH-cam reactors channel and then immediately begin to tell them how to react and/or what opinion to have? The way a person reacts is the way they react, the opinion they form is theirs, not yours. If you don't like a reactor, don't come back, pretty simple. It is fine to say, I disagree with your opinion and this is why, but don't tell someone their personal reaction is 'wrong' because it does not match yours. Not too long ago there was a cute little game that swept the Internet/Twitter verse - the Yanny/Laurel exercise - this actually had a lesson in it that evidently many missed. The point being we don't actually all hear and react the same way to digitally reproduced audible sounds. So, how and what a person hears is impacted by the reproduction method, phone speakers vs ear buds vs head phones, etc. even your emotional state you are in at the time you experience something impacts your initial reaction. If all you are looking for is self validation then please stick to reactors that smoke the same cigarettes as you, as it were. Maunalee has already biased her reactions a bit as she has gone to the pay-per-review method, thus forcing her to react a certain way to get repeat money. If she starts changing to match all the comments she will be back to the everyone is a 9-10 again. Please let her have her own honest reactions.

Edit... People "flock" to a channel because the reactor puts the artist's name in the title of their videos. Only reason I'm ever on this channel is because of Angelina's name.
