Hello from Patagonia! I just heard from OnX Backcountry that they’re offering 70% off for an early Black Friday deal. So if you want a great deal on a year long membership (that’s like $9 for a premium membership!) use code “eric70bf”. Sorry it doesn’t apply to gift cards but if you just want to treat yo self, it’s a great time to do it! 👉 www.onxmaps.com/backcountry/r/erichanson
Thank you so much, Eric for the shout out on my bags! Good news, I’ve actually lowered the price, so less than $40 😁. Appreciate you my friend and this is a great list of ideas.
You’re a man of the people! I hope you sell a million of these things. I bright mine to Patagonia and I’ve been obsessed with it since I picked one up.
A really great gift I got from my family one year was a Forest Pass permit! Check out local permits in your area since they are a great gift since it’s typically not expensive but can be used all year!
Tip with the sand/snow stakes, if you're planning to use them look up tutorials on their proper usage; using them the same way you'd use regular stakes (which is the way a lot of people use them and indeed the way they're often pictured in use on packaging/listings) does help a bit vs regular stakes but you can get even better hold with proper technique...
I’m obsessed with my NU 33. I hike early mornings with my dog almost daily before sunrise, and I don’t leave home without it. That extra lumen is great for scanning the area around us when we hear other forest friends around us. Great recommendation.
Added a couple of these gadgets to my wishlist. I recently got a Govee and can't wait to use it next year. I'm still learning what I need to keep comfortable/warm and the thermometer will help me dial in my gear for different temps! I actually saw it on Dan Becker's channel first. Now that I'm not backpacking for the winter I have it in my freezer since we tend to get power outages occasionally and it will help me know how warm it gets in there in the case of a longer outage. Multifunctional!! I am tempted to buy multiples LOL.
Just gonna say it. I love your channel because you share your experience and knowledge. Stuff ends up in there because you have experience with your stuff and I appreciate. Please don’t deviate and just talk about stuff. Integrity. Stick with that.
Thank you Kristy! I will definitely keep making videos about actual trips and adventures and things I’m curious about. It won’t only be gear talk. And thank you!
It's that time of year to think of gifts to give our loved ones.....awww who are we kidding.....gifts to give ourselves. Great list of gifts Eric. I have the Petrel pot, Arcade belt, and the Backcountry Exposure food bag already. It is the perfect size to fit all your food for a two night backpacking trip. I just ordered the Govee thermometer to go in my stocking this year.
I have the Zero Pump. It's loud. Last hike I used an inflation bag. Worked fine. Silent. My friend Neighbor Dave and I have the Govee thermometer. They always read 2-3 degrees F differently. Still a good tool to understand how well sleep gear works. I am impressed with the Fire Maple pot. Using it with my DIY alcohol stove water boils 15-20% faster. With this pot my best stoves boil 2 cups 65F water in 6-7 minutes and burn about 13 minutes on 1 ounce of denatured alcohol. A titanium pot will use more fuel. The pot also fits my Soto Amicus. Just got the NU25. Excellent. Much easier to use than my BD Spot. I made a "hiking belt" for $2. For a pillow I carry the Trekology with a DIY down/feather topper made from an old pillow and $1 of fabric. Might buy a Moonlite chair. Currently carry an REI Flexlite with a DIY X strap to stop it sinking into the ground. Thanks for your list. Good stuff.
I can vouch for the grip6 socks. Love them hiking, but I wear steel toed boots to work every day and love their boot socks. Hold up much better than cheap cotton socks, and don't stink in the hot summers
“When I’m hiking with pants on “ I actually spit out a little bit of coffee when you said that try not to laugh! 🎉😂 Also congratulations on your wedding. Very happy for both of you. !
Eric, I'm so glad to hear you advocate for Grip6 socks. They are my absolute favorite socks. You've offered so many great ideas for gift-giving that I'm now including myself on my list of gift recipients. Happy Thanksgiving, Eric.
I have an old sen. puffy I was getting ready to toss because it is stained and faded. Now I have a great thing to do/make with it instead of it going to landfill. Thanks
I think your one step away from wearing turquoise jewelry. Sort of the Nathaniel Rateliff album cover look with a Clint Eastwood Pancho. I don't know... I just can see it in your eyes. I been doing the outdoor thing for a long time. I would be happy to receive any of these items. Nice list. Thanks for the share. 👴 Head lamp is awesome; I like the 25. 💚💚💚 Oh... I realize no one talks about it in the Backpkg/camping community. But a nice EDC Fanny pack would be a great gift. I use mine for much more than EDC, great front pouch.
For down booties I like the goose feet gear system where you can get super light 7d down socks with booties designed to go over them. Then you can sleep with the socks but walk around camp with the overbooties and not get ur sleeping socks dirty
@18:05 !❤ I have seen literally watched ONE HUNDRED TH-cam personalities speak on this headlamp. YOU are the FIRST🔥 to bother mentioning that THE CORD IS GLOW-IN-THE-DARK??❤ Well, why didn't someone say something sooner!!❤ omg it's exactly what I wanted.
You don’t need a temperature difference to use a flip fuel type device if it has the button on the side. The button reduces the pressure in the bottom canister by releasing a bit of gas then the liquid gas flows in to the bottom canister . No one ever seems to demonstrate this?
NU 33 was my choice as as a low vision person. No fun not being able to distinguish the trail connection opening between trees when leaving your secluded campsite. Those extra lumins made a big difference. Weight difference was worth it.
I love my flip fuel valve! I use ice water and hot water to make the pressure difference. I did have one Lindl valve on a canister start to leak after refilling it many times, so watch out for that. And of course please weigh the canister you’re filling so you don’t overfill it! (Boom!)
27:32 A belt so great, you can wear it with or without pants. I need to try those OV sun hoodies. I like the OR Echo hoodies, but when they are on super sales, they are still more expensive than the OV hoodies.
The CRKT Biwa is my knife for backpacking, to make marshmallow sticks, food prep, and to filet trout. I like a fixed blade because its easier to hold, clean and more capable. Xd-2f stove and Petril pot FTW, best stove pot combo of 2024! Petri's performance is worth having to use the wind master or xd-2f they are best stoves performance wise anyway.
I have a really hard time leaving my kershaw leek at home. It's 100% "extra weight", but I'm not sure if there's a day in the past 5 years that I haven't used it.
@alantewebdesign I think if you want a knife bring it! Many capable knives in the 1-2oz weight. I find it extremely helpful in many ways to carry a knife backpacking especially a very small fixed blade because its easy washable after I filet a fish or prep food and only weighs a couple ounces.
Nitecore refreshed the design for the previous look and feel with the NU-20 Classic, but honestly been thinking of giving the Nitecore HA-11 a try combined with an eneloop AA rechargeable or similar battery from other brands. Benefits of rechargeable but benefits from being able to replace fast with other AA's.
Happy Holidays Eric! Nice tips on the winter camping gear. The intergraded pot with windscreen is pretty cool ,and something Iv considered over the last weeks. I was unaware of the snow stakes though. I’ll be backpacking in the Canadian Rockies in January, so it’s definitely something I’ll look into purchasing. Seems pretty key for that environment. I forgot about the booties! Good recommendations!
I got the fire maple pot directly from fire maple and it fits on my msr pocket rocket deluxe. The website says it should work with any stove divided in 3
While the flextail zero is small it doesn’t have the power to inflate most mattresses properly. However, their slightly larger models can and one has a built in light. They’re also amazingly useful to stoke camp fires. Grip6’s belts are amazing as well. I have a few and while their carbon fiber model is pricey, it’s worth it if you travel through airports a lot.
That is a sweater he bought in Peru on a previous group hiking adventure. I cannot find where Eric may have provided a link to purchase one of those beautiful sweaters ( I want one, too!!), but his "The Gear I Loved (and Hated)..." gear review video from May 12 after his Peru trip (with a really entertaining segment with his wife Kristi) may have some info...
Oh before i forget again, the best sun hoodie for men on a tight budget that probably rivals an Oregon Research version (with better colors than OR LOL) is the Bassdash Men's UPF 50+ 1/4 Zip Fishing Hoodie. For coffee when i want a real brew instead of instant i can vouch the Soto Helix (or clones from CHY-NA) compare to french presses or an aero-press. If you get the clone from china make sure to get the similar sized one as they come in several sizes.
Whoa whoa whoa! I may have given Dan guff about it. But then I started using it and found it to be fun. I don’t consider it to be a must have for everyone, but if you like gear and gadgets I think it’s a good one.
I've tried other models like the Govee and my issue was the wifi.... I don't get any on my hikes so it's not working for me... Is this one JUST bluetooth or you need signal to use it like the other ones? Thanks

Fuel canisters are made for one-time use only. Tanks like scuba tanks are designed for multiple refills, but even those require recertification every x number of years.
I like the regular Death Wish coffee, but their instant coffee packets definitely don't taste the same and aren't very good unless you're really desperate for coffee.
The camping moon stove cannot be used with the fire maple petrel pot *unless you get the Soto triflex attachment to replace the 4 prong support it comes with. I’ve been using the camping moon +soto triflex + fire maple petrel here in Patagonia in extremely windy conditions and it’s been incredibly efficient!

It is baby alpaca wool from local makers in Peru!

Thank you! I was wondering if that was it but wasn’t sure!
Agree with everything except the pump zero. Tried multiple batteries fully charged under multiple conditions, can’t even get a basic Xthem filled 15%
That’s really weird. I’ve been able to use one charge to fill my mattress about ten times. Must be a defect?
I've used mine on a few trips and my 4 night trip filling two REI Helix mattresses each night I didn't need to recharge the battery
The larger flextail models are much more powerful and not much heavier.
Mine kinda dies after one or two fills as well.
