Awesome, really awesome. I never learned this song, but you're playing is tremendous. Back in 78, or so, I ordered a new 4001, but instead of Ged's black, I choose a white (more an ivory) with black binding. Not even sure if it was custom or not, but I know that I ordered it, and had to wait for it to come in. (still have never seen another in person) It came in the case with the purple lining! My brother played drums ( a big set of Tama's) and our bestie played the guitar, and we played all Rush covers. Never this song, as we didn't have keys. Eventually when I move on and played in a band with all originals, and started to play in clubs, I sold the Rick for a smaller Steinberger bass, as the Rick was very heavy on stage and I was always worried that the head would hit a cymbal on those small club stages! Many years later I sold all my bass guitars (of course I still wish I had my Rick) and many years later I started playing an acoustic guitar. Years later, (last year, I decided to try an electric guitar. Today (as of last week) I now own an Alex Lifeson ES355AW in ivory, and I can't even begin to describe the feeling of playing some of those chords on that guitar! It can sound like a crystal chandelier but also has so much power behind it. Even playing Fly by Night, or some parts of La Villa, Red Barchetta, and Entre Nous! I just love it, I'm in another world, on another planet. I'm not good, but someday I hope to be mediocre! To me, sometimes it sounds awesome, but I'm partial! With the chorus, the 90's Tube Screamer, a Prophet, a phaser and all the right pedals, including a Roland Jazz chorus amp in stereo, it just sounds like Heavan, no matter what I play!! (when I don't suck too bad!)
I'm not a rush fan at all. I got to this post because I did a search for Rickenbacker. But I have to say, that is some of the sickest bass playing I have seen lately. Thumbs up.
I was introduced to Rush with the jam in this song. I was 14.. Since then, I have not stopped being impressed by this band that I have seen 30 times in concert.
Simply awesome, man. You appear to be so relaxed and play so smoothly, you make it look easy, and I know it isn't easy. I've been playing bass in 50s, 60s, and 70s rock & country bands for many years, and like many others I first picked it up because of Geddy. His identifiable style, and especially that great 4001 tone he used to have. Imagine my utter disappointment when I realized I just don't have "the stuff" to play like that. It's dexterity, agility, a sense of not needing to rush (pun intended) and smoothness. Oh, I can maybe play the hell outa some old Dusty Hill licks, but this is a whole other plane of musicianship. But you are an inspiration - even to geezers like me, and I bet a lot of younger guys must appreciate what you do here as I appreciate it. Please, keep them Geddy licks coming for us. I -at least- can watch and smile in amazement, and truly wish I had your talent. :)
My productivity has been hosed since I liked the first one of these vids. They keep popping up when I go to youtube for "work" and I can't resist. Damn those deep learning algorithms and especially your awesome covers :)
Hell yeah!!!! You Nailed it! Killer bro I got that album in 1979 second hand picked up a guitar learned rush to a T and blew away every guitarist in my city. If your a musician and you learn rush your skills will beat all
2:53-3:15...I mean holy lord of the christ jesus and mary prince of peace wonder councillor...what even is going on here - that bass couple with Alex's guitar fireworks. Just insane.
An amazing video. The music that was plumbed in sounds better than any version I've ever heard and your bass work is phenomenal. I personally like your sound better than what Ged was using in the 70s, hear more real bass & less mids. I can't help but notice you are also playing farther from the bridge then he does which may be adding to the fullness. 5-Stars
Amazing! & I'm just amazed TH-cam let you get away with uploading! Whenever I tried similar with copyrighted music, it got deleted. HOW'D you manage this??
I had that Badass bridge installed back in 1982 and I installed the Schallers the same year. The Badass really has zero effect on sustain or any other thing but it's a bit easier to intonate than the stock Rickenbacker bridge... Of course, if Geddy had a Badass bridge, then it was good enough for me and it was also really the only aftermarket bridge I could get at the time anyways... Thanks for watching....
is the muting on the bass during Als solo is so AL could stand out? if so what other tunes does Ged do that on, hard to hear or see unless you see it like here. love this stuff. GEDDY!! thanks for this vid!!
+Kevin Chiasson Great news indeed!! Enjoy that bass. If you have the chance, get two amps and run it in stereo. The sound is incredible. Thanks for the compliments Kevin. I'm doing more vids soon...just have to decide what is next...there will be more Wal stuff too....
I'm looking at a 1001RB as my next amp since my little Ampeg PF800 isn't doing it for me. I was depressed for a few weeks after killing my 400RB and figured that since I regularly use 500 watts I think that's a good next step, have you ever run your 4001 mono through your 700? I'm wondering what I should do about getting a baseline on my 4003.
I have never ran my 4001 in mono through my amps, however if I had to I could because I have a mono splitter cable for when I use basses not wired in stereo, I'm pretty sure I'll never get a tone in mono like I can in stereo though.... I couldn't imagine how loud my rig would be if my amps were the more powerful 1001 RB's ......and if you are going through a house PA, then you won't need all that power anyways..... these two 700RBII's going through two 212's are enough for me. If I ever gig, I'd have plenty of headroom if I needed it.
I notice you installed a Badass bridge (or what looks like a Badass). Was it an easy install or did you have to do some construction? I see there's what looks like a plate under the bridge. I'm about to pickup a Ric after not having one for a while and the first thing I thoughtwas that the stock bridge has to go.
Yeah, the stock bridge has it's issues... but installing a Badass I on a Ric isn't exactly a walk in the park. You'll have to rout for the bridge and sink it down about 1/8" or so.. I had it installed back in 1982 by a professional luthier.. I installed the pickguard that surrounds the bridge...(no plate under it) At the time (1982) there weren't many options for a replacement bridge and since the Badass worked for Geddy, then it would work for me. It is easier to adjust it but keep in mind that once you rout the body it will decrease the value of the bass if you ever decide to sell it.... mine's a keeper.. Thanks for watching.
Great sound. May I ask… your ric, does it have the capacitor in the bridge circuit (what’s now called vintage tone) and are you mainly boosting the bridge pickup in this vid?
It's a 1981 model and the wiring is original, so it has that capacitor. I run the pickups full up as well as the tone on the bass but I couldn't tell you how I set the tone with each pickup on the amps as I never keep any records of tone settings.
+Kevin Chiasson Thanks for the compliment and spending the time to watch. Makes it worth doing. No bezel. I might have had a use for one early on when I started playing as I played a lot more over the treble pickup back then and sometimes cut my thumb on the chrome surround...
I ordered a Jg 4003 a few months ago.....long wAit time....I owned a 4001 back in 79...kick myself for selling it Anyways.... Luv your covers. Best rush takes on the tubes dood. Cheers Kev
No, not in Toronto...I wish I was though....been there three times to see Rush and it's a beautiful city. One thing is for sure...I'd be visiting Caplansky's on a regular basis if I did live in or near Toronto. Try the smoked meat reuben.... awesome!
Excellent job my friend I've watched all your Rush covers, seriously perfect man, especially Hemispheres. Quick question what mic are you using on the bass cabs? And if you get a chance check out my channel, I've done 2 Gentle Giant bass covers, would like to get your opinion!
Hi Bob. Thanks for watching. No mics are used. I record everything direct from the amps to the mixer. The Taurus pedals are direct also via a Sans Amp Bass DI. Gentle Giant had a great bass player as well. Will check it out. Thanks again.

Such a criminally underrated song
Just brilliant
I don't use to comment on TH-cam, but man, this is brilliant, fantastic, the pizzicato, the tone... One of the best covers I've ever seen! Perfect!
One of my favorite Rush tunes, your tone is impeccable. And, of course, your playing is spot on. Loved it, as I do all your covers.
Thank you, John.
Geddy is the man and you sir are a close second. Very well done.
Quite blown away at this. I have no words....
the difference between playing the music and feeling the music. well done.
Bravo!! The best Rush cover I`ve ever heard!!

Maybe you should check out some other Rush stuff, lots of sick-ass bass playing to be found there

Epic. Beautiful playing. My favorite Rush tune, along with Beneath Between Behind... 👍
Thanks, Janice for your compliments. Thank you for watching.
WTF made Geddy make a line like this back in the day??? simply amazing!
And sang it while playing which is insane. Geddy is not human
Love the Rickenbacker! Awesome!
Thanks Jeff. That one is my baby !
Killer tone from Rick and fingers!
The ENTIRE bass line is great...but just listen to the bass during Lifeson's guitar solo !!!! Super funky and jamming is so delish !!!! :O

Wow. Where did you find a Ric set up with Badass Bridge and Schaler tuning pegs? Geddy Lee standard 4001.
I had that Badass bridge installed back in 1982 and I installed the Schallers the same year. Fucking amazing dude....
I had a 4003 that I put a Badass bridge on, I would give almost ANYTHING to have that one back....
Same here, except mine was a '76 4001 that I bought for $400.00 in 1985.
is the muting on the bass during Als solo is so AL could stand out? if so what other tunes does Ged do that on, hard to hear or see unless you see it like here. love this stuff. GEDDY!! thanks for this vid!!

I am running the bass into two GK 700RBII amps direct to a mixer.
The cabs are two Mesa PH 212's but those aren't mic'd for the vids.
What year is this bass?
June, 1981.
Dude,...you sound cleaner than Geddy. What band are you in?
Thanks! I'm glad you like the tone I'm getting.
I'm not in a band.
Well, I’d buy your record if you were.

Absolutely awsome. Thank you. Geddy Lee was absolutely awsome in this disco era.
