I am 16 and just learned how to play freewill completely through with perfect accenting and hitting every note. I thought I have conquered everything that was hard. I have learned most of YYZ but that's still gonna take a little while while to perfect. But this right here I must say is astonishing my friend. The Thunder that comes from that 4001 is beyond anything I've ever heard . This double live album came out when I was in high school and is my favorite. This is what Rush is suppose to sound like . It's funny because you sound more like Geddy than He does.....or did . If only the whole M.P. tour was filmed. It kills me that all that material was scrapped.....all those incredible songs lost. Thanks, for listening to me gripe.

    technically and sonically stellar! the tone you're getting is just the coolest and you've got the style of Geddy, but still making it your own. the amount of work you've put in to develop your skill, technique and assembling & arranging the equipment to achieve this tone is self-evident, but can you comment on how much pure fun it is to play this?

    Hey there! Amazing playing and tone. I'm about to buy a Ricky myself and have two questions for you if you don't mind. 1. Do you recommend installing a Badass I or Badass II on the Ric? Or keeping the stock bridge? 2. Where can I get my hands one of those black plastic plates that you and Ged surround the bridge with? I'm hoping my Rick will end up sounding as good as yours!

    • @66TJP
      @66TJP  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joel..
      It's not necessary to install a Badass bridge on your Ric. The intonation is easier but I don't really think they help with tone or sustain. If you DO install a Badass I, you will have to rout out so it sits in the body a bit or it will be too high. The black surround was cut out of a square sheet of pickguard. Thanks for watching and good luck with your bass and playing.

      I don't use any effects at all on the bass. The bass is recorded straight off of the amp. The Moog Taurus pedals are direct and I think I used a little chorus or slight delay on them to fatten them up a bit.

    Hello! Cool cover!
    Do you use a fingernail when playing? I want to achieve the same tone by pressing the string VERY VERY hard, but it seems to me that this is not enough. After I watched the video about the signature bass from the Fender, where Geddy Lee said he was playing with his nail, I think it's necessary ... Use the nail, but I'm not sure ...
    thx for answer

    • @66TJP
      @66TJP  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I might be inadvertently be using my index fingernail when I play but it breaks from time to time so, I cannot count on it being there., however I grow the index and middle finger nails just a bit for this reason (it might affect the sound just a bit).....the setup is important..straight neck, low action, Rotosound Stainless roundwounds, I attack hard with my right and fret pretty solidly, not a death grip but I do apply pressure. You also have to get into Geddy's headspace as well...and practice.

    • @julizapev8102
      @julizapev8102 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the answer!
      If the strings are too low and the attack is strong, they emit "pop"- sound without a long sound (this was my mistake). I picked up the strings about 1.9 mm above the 12th fret and made the neck very even. Also I remove some high frequencies and raise the middle, otherwise the sound becomes very "dirty", but in the mix it's not audible.

    • @66TJP

      Even just a two channel amp can provide pleasing results. Just set the tone and gain settings on each channel accordingly for each pickup. And of course by running stereo you can route the different pickups through different effects pedals, studio effects, compressors, etc.

      I do grow the index and middle finger nails a bit longer but I'm really not sure if they have that much effect on the overall sound. Perhaps, but I think the hard downstroke strike I use with my index finger gives it a lot of snap.

      I do not keep any records of my amp settings. I just start with everything flat and just try to dial in the sound. Usually never past twelve o'clock for the bass and the treble around eleven o'clock. The mids are usually around one o'clock but the strings you use and your own attack and fretting pressure also affect the tone. I'm sorry I cannot be specific because the settings change from time to time, but thanks for stopping by..

    • @66TJP
      @66TJP  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lots of small differences. My neck is really thin compared to most 4003's I've played and perhaps the pickups on your 4003 aren't quite the same as the older ones in my 4001's?? The older 4003's, the ones from the early to mid 80's were closer to the old 4001 in terms of sound I think because they were using those same type of pickups.....I think they have changed. Other than that, I use Rotosound stainless steel roundwounds and in this video, I ran direct without EQ. Thanks again for taking the time to watch, Darryl.
