Inside the Studio of Rachel Davies Mosaics. Creating Mosaic Art Inspired Nature

This mosaic was created as part of an art challenge to create a series of small mosaics inspired by images from nature. The mosaic measures 2.5x3.5 inches.
The mosaic was created by setting the tesserae (the small pieces of slate, stone, glass etc) into a bed of pigmented tile adhesive. (also known as thinset).

I love watching the “press” into the adhesive. I am inspired to start but cannot find this black tile thinset at my local Lowes. Do you have supplies that I can order?

Tile adhesive only comes in white or grey. You need to add a black pigment to it to get it black. Look for black cement or grout colourant.

I love the color and texture of that rusty slate. The music choice added a lot--Iusually turn sound off because it can be distracting. beautiful piece.
