- Watch as I create a small mosaic inspired by the patterns of lichen growing on a rock near the coast. This abstract mosaic design was created using some shell fragments, along with various types of stone, glass and slate. The pieces are individually cut and set into a bed of pigmented tile adhesive (also known as thinset).
The mosaic was created as part of an art challenge to create a series of small mosaics inspired by images from nature. The mosaic measures 2.5x3.5 inches.
I have some PDFs available for free that cover some of the techniques I use to make my mosaics. Visit the following links for more details.

Que hermoso trabajo, y con esa música lo vería mil veces.gracias por compartir. Puedo preguntar de que está compuesta la masa o pegamento?
Thank you! I use tile adhesive/thinset with a black pigment added.
Gorgeous! Are you putting the components directly on regular thin set mortar?
Yes, I use thinset with a black pigment added.
@@racheldaviesmosaics thank you so much. Your work is amazing!
Hi Rachel, Really love your work! Can I ask, what is the material of the base with squares, that you worked on? Also, where did you get these beautiful pieces of stones and tiles from?
Thanks for watching! For the base I use a foam core tile backer board - common brands are Wediboard, Jackoboard, Marmox etc. My materials come from various sources. Some of them are given to me by friends and students, some are bought online from mosaics suppliers, and others are foraged locally.
Beautiful! How do you cut stones to the size you need? Thanks!
Thanks, I use various tools - I have a hammer and hardie to cut larger stones, then nippers to cut smaller pieces.
Bonsoir, une autre petite question ! Est-il facile de mettre une fixation sur ce support ? Merci
For this type of board you need to add fixings before you start the mosaic as they need to go through the board because of the foam core. But I intend to frame these small mosaics, so will stick them directly into the frame which will then be hung on the wall.
@@racheldaviesmosaics Ok merci, oui l'encadrement rajoutera une profondeur qui devrait mettre en valeur la mosaique. Merci
