    In this extended video tutorial I'll explain you how you can skin any part you found around you with carbonfiber - carbon fiber (fibre).
    By skinning parts you will add carbonfiber on top of your original part. By doing so you will add weight, but you will also add stiffness to your part. You can compare skinning parts with carbonfiber with flattening parts before paint with bondo. You add layer after layer and sand inbetween to get a high gloss finish at the end. In this tutorial all materials used are from easy composites. You can find their website down below, as well as direct links to the products you will need. They also did a skinning tutorial you can find on following link: • How to cover parts in ...
    Step by step I'll go through the following in this video:
    Chose your part
    Sand and Clean your parts
    Add a basecoat
    Wrap or skin your part with dry carbonfiber
    Vacuumbag
    Add epoxy resin and sand
    Clearcoat
    Finish and final look

    Tip: using solidworks you can download .stl files of masks and so on and use "flatten" option to flatten the surface of the mask from 3D to 2D with the option of release cuts built-in to prevent warping. Print on paper for a template to cut the carbon fiber.

    To minimize bubbles... make sure you're putting on extremely thin layers at a time. Also use a hair dryer or heat gun with the resin is still wet to eliminate the bubbles.

      @thomaschristopherwhite9043 9 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      U WUT M8? No no no.. if you have a vacuum bag or using a mold and vacuum bag method, you only need to let the air bubbles drain out with the excess resin since that process is already air tight. Using a hair drier or heat gun to eliminate bubbles only applies if your doing brushing on layers of matting and resin.

    If you are just going for the look just us g.p. Resin with a heavy clear gelcoat sprayed over it after sanding. Use wax solution thin with styrene and maybe a touch of speed patch. Wetsand 320 6-800 buff. It can be done in and hour or so from start to finish

    A personal recommendation for the masks is to get some clay, oil based preferably since water base dries quickly over time, and fill the insides of the mask. So once you start vacuuming the mask doesn't lose its form and you get a better result since it rests on the clay.

    Have you try spraying aceton after you apply your laminating coat? It surely helps to flatten your resin surface so you don't have to make too much layer... Also no need to do several sand work, all you need is a single sand work before clear coating...
    Anyway, love the fail part, it helps a lot 🙏🙏🙏

    at 12:37 you add some black pigment,
    was it only two drops (as we see) or more of them?
    about the layers of epoxy over the carbon,
    was is a regular epoxy? or the one specially for this skinning process, the XCR Epoxy Coating Resin?

    When you are sending the surface after applying epoxy - use Scotch Bright! It will work way better with highs and lows.

    • @MatthieuLibeert
      @MatthieuLibeert  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do follow you on this one, the problem is that it is to "flexible" with sanding paper you are removing the highs only so you are left with the lows...If you follow what I mean, when you then add resin again the high and lows will be totally flat to a high gloss :) with Scotch Bright you are just sanding "waves" less lows less highs... Not saying my way is the best, sure there are other ways, its just a way I feel safe with and know it will work out great for me :)

    • @DJKorzH
      @DJKorzH 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Matthieu Libeert Thats understood. I just mean that if you cant sand the lows - there may be some problems with the adhesive between the layers. May be i`m not right. Will try your way as well ;)

The vacuum is enough for small parts and didnt deform the parts.. I dont need the base coat in black right ? I have to wait again till its tacky or i can put the next layers ????

    • @MatthieuLibeert
      @MatthieuLibeert  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chucky Norris correct, no base coat is needed, you can use epoxy wait for it to get tacky, add fabric, add epoxy, wait for it to cure tacky and add a second coat, then sand and do exactly the same till surface is good

      Chucky Norris it takes a bit of practice, a twill weave carbonfiber will allow the weave to bend around 3D shapes, there might be some visual distortion but should be a big deal

    do ever use heat, like with a blowtorch to burst the airbubbles ? i seen i done on expoy countertop and so on. since heat expands air it makes the bubble burst.

    Hey! I was wondering if doing something like this (and adding a little extra padding) would make one of those good for paintball?? It seems like it would add a lot of strength and thickness to the mask and it might offer some protection.

    Matt, this is a great video thank you so much!! Rich from Carbon Composites told me to check your vids out as i had already seen this one i figured i would look over it once more...I'm building a full face helmet from back of neck to fron of adams apple.....do u suggest i just wrap my carved versions with carbon fiber after adding the epoxy resin and skin base?? Then i could just cut it in half from ear to ear and use a hinge to keep it together?? Let me know what you think!! Thanks bro!

      @MatthieuLibeert  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Patrick Duquesne thanks for the positive comment :) glad to hear you've found your way to my videos, and other suggest you to watch them! What you are proposing sounds like a good plan! but make sure you use some release then to be able to remove the carbonfiber piece from your carved version! it will also be a bit difficult to cut it...with a dremel you will have to be very carefull not to cut through you carved version if you want to use it again :) good luck!

    Have you figured out a way to vacuum bag the first layer of resin onto the carbon fiber? Did you try it using a different bag material or another process?

    Awesome video, what size carbon did you use?
    The skinning starter pack on easy composites is 1m x 30cm
    Is this big enough for that mask?

    • @MatthieuLibeert
      @MatthieuLibeert  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jordan Tooke I think it might work but not sure, the width might be an isue... think my sheets used would be around 40cm by 40cm so would be better to buy an extra 1m² of carbonfiber

  • @JUNAID187

    Would it be better to do it in an autoclave so the pressure pushes the vacuum bag down even more into the ridges of the Spider-Man mask?

      +Uros Mitrovic I know....it's been a long time since I last posted anything about my progress. Every day life really slowed progress down since then. Just got done making molds of everything and now doing final cleanup of those parts. Next I'll be either painting or figuring out the strapping/joints for everything. I'll have to post another video soon.

      +Uros Mitrovic That was the plan. Opening faceshield and all. I want to see if I can figure out voice activation for opening and closing the face shield, but that may be over my head.
