    My grandma who raised me made this all the time , also just with onions , vinegar & sugar and cucumbers -
    Like her greenbeans she taught me with her garden greenbeans cooked with Vinger / sugar & onions cooked down.
    Yes my Grandma was full German my Grandpa was full Irish both their parents came from the old country, my grandma lived through the depression she was born in 1916 and lived to age 96yrs old .
    Taught us all about the depression & to be frugal ,
    God bless you ...
    I was looking up cucumbers recipes and THERE IT WAS ....
    THANK U

    My mother made these all the time. She also used the same type of "dressing" on lettuce which she called "wilted lettuce" . If she didn't have sour cream, she'd use mayo. If she had neither sour cream or mayo, she'd use evaporated milk. Regardless, it tasted good. I had some cukes in the fridge so I had a big bowl of this for dinner tonight--made with evaporated milk 'cause I didn't have enough sour cream...............Yummy. Thanks for the motivation.

      There are so many versions of this and I love how this is a staple kind of recipe for generations.

    This was on the table with ever meal as long as there were cucumbers in the garden. She always had a relish tray with radishes, green onions, sweet pickles, banana peppers and whatever else was ripe from the garden. It always cut down on the main course which saved money. Now I wonder why I did not keep up that idea?! Great idea you shared!!

      I know what you mean. It seems like when we were kids there were always more side dishes on the table then we have now. But I suspect maybe we ate smaller portions of the main dish then too.

      2leelou Creates ok, so let’s say your recipe was an inspiration based on ingredients on hand. Used 3 kirby cukes plus 1 zucchini. Heavy cream was off/lumpy/yucky. So I used half cup avocado oil with 1 heaping tbsp of extra tangy sour cream powder. Kept the white vinegar (memories of similar recipes from my childhood) and cane sugar. Bunches of black pepper. Is absolutely divine. Tx for the inspiration!

      LyLy MoWa yes. Sounds delish. This is how I usually cook. With what have on hand. Some of the most unusual choices can be the best ever. P.S. also how fancy chefs work. Lol

      Edie Boudreau Agreed. I always « wing » things based on inspiration. I can never follow a recipe (except for canning and baking). Looking forward to some yummy lunches this week. :)

    The actual secret to this salad....is soaking the cucs and onions in saltwater (generous amt, but don't go overboard) for about 30-40min dep.on amt. Then draining in collander.(don't let it soak so long that it becomes overly salty). This actually firms up the cucs and onions and opens up the cell walls so that when the Vinigar/sugar mixture is added, the veg will actually draw the dressing mix into each invid. piece and it will stay crunchy longer. Also you don't have to add any salt later.

    I think Aunt Mildred used to make this too. Doesn't taste anything like the ones with mayo. I think she even used this with her sliced cabbage & carrots & onions. I think that's why I've never liked slaw any other way.

      Oh that sounds delicious! Maybe I'll try to make it with the slaw ingredients next time.

    Is this like a German cucumber salad or a Pennsylvania Dutch cucumber salad?

      @onetwocue 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The PA Dutch version has vinegar, sour cream sugar and dill
