Barber here. You sir have the very best, no frills or flash, videos I've found. It's important in my opinion to be very basic and fundamental during your shave. Flash and bang have no place with the face. Certainly with a literal razor in your hand. Bravo sir. Bravo.

Back in the 1980s I would get a straight razor shave once a week. I was working construction in Salt Lake City. The barber was old school, his shop was located on the 3rd floor of the building I was working on. He would always show me the first towel and say its the dirtiest towel he ever saw! After I moved it took 10 years before my next straight razor shave, which was in San Francisco. Best thing a working guy could ever get!
Very true! Nothing compares to a steaming hot towel to get all that dirt from your pores. I remember shaving a drag artist once, and that was all make up!

I had a barber shaving me once and he got into a political conversation with another person in the shop. The way he was waving that blade around in front of my face, I just knew was I going to make the papers.
I'm kinda torn I'll be honest..I've had a good classic hot towel wet shave and it was a treat..expensive but hey..women pay out the nose for hair styles and manipedis so it only makes sense that a guy getting a haircut and a luxury shave like this should expect to pay more...especially if they use actual shaving cream and not a cheaper gel that they buy by the tub load. Anyway, I've had one shave like this and while expensive (around 85 bucks in early 2020 before things went to pot) for a hot towel wet shave, haircut and shoulder massage (nice little combo), it was a nice little treat for myself..but I'm torn because I want to get another one but I do like how my beard looks..I look younger without it (I go from in my mid 30's to mid-late 20's when my face is fully shaved) but I do like how much more mature my beard and mustache makes me look, and it takes me a good 5-6 months to grow things back a decent amount. Rock and a hard place for me, doesn't help that I don't have a whole lot of choices where I live for places that offer a hot towel wet shave with a straight razor..there's like...2 that I know of.
Few things are more important to a man than a good barber. I see mine every two weeks and he is able to pick up our conversation right where we left off. In some ways it is almost therapeutic. Great barbers become great friends.
At 56 yo, i can count may a few dozen times I made really great shaves that were extremely pleasant during and after. Watching this, makes me want to go to a professional barber shop and walk away with an amazing shave.

So I commented on your page a long time ago about me being a barber and getting into hot towel shaves. Well I just finished one and the biggest issue I have is my lather getting super dry even if I relather. I’ve tried doing a more wet lather and I even keep a cup of warm water beside me that I dip my fingers in to apply to the skin to try and get the slipperyness back. And still I struggle a bit. End result comes out great just takes me way longer on my passes than it should. This is my process 1.hot water on the skin feeling for bumps 2. Pre shave oil/pre shave cream (massaging it in the skin) 3.hot towel 4.lather 5.First pass 6. 2nd towel 7.a little more preshave oil followed by lather 8. Second Pass 9. Cold Towel 10. Aftershave and or moisturizer 11. Talc Powder Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks Gib! The razor is a Turkish Sedef razor, paired with a Permasharp Professional single edged blade - in my opinion the perfect combo! Turkish barbers are shaving tough Turkish beards all day long and if it's good enough for them, it's good enough for me....
I wish I was brave enough to use a straight razor! Here in the US, barbers must have a special license to use straight razors.I feel it's become a lost art. I know of no one who'll give you a shave.

My father wants me to shave him and i want to give him a full hot towel shave but I got a few questions if someone can help me that would be great. 1. The blade take off the oil and after a shave i want to use a shave oil lubricant of the brand "American Crew" is it a good brand or do you know where i can find a better one online or what ingredients I need to look for. Hi. For the towels I waft them in front of the client. I think this adds to the theatre of the experience! It should still be almost too hot to the fingertips when you put it on - you’ve got more nerve endings in your fingertips than in your face. If you wait until it feels ok it won’t stay hot on the face for very long! Most of the commercial shave oils have either a lot of chemicals added (preservatives, etc) or are made with mineral oil which can make the skin feel greasy. You can make you own very easily using almond oil or grape seed oil and add some essential oils for aroma, or buy a pre blended massage oil. You can also use a small amount of this after the shave as a moisturiser, it’s very nourishing for the skin. Hope this helps!
I think it makes them safer! More blade equals a closer shave. If you have less blade showing its not as close a shave so guys keep going over it, using more pressure and going against the growth, causing more irritation and nicks.
Is there anything that can be done with the soap to extend the lather? Mine dries up much faster than yours. Is there something to add to the water to extend the lather?
Sounds like your lather is too dry? What soap are you using? Check out the r/wicked_edge subreddit - you will definitely find an answer there, search "dry lather" or something similar.

Rod Weiland hi Rod, glad you enjoyed the video. For shaving towels I always use terry nappies! They are a nice loose weave and heat up really quickly in the steamer. They are also not too heavy on the face. And they’re cheap as well!
