"In the aftermath of the Union victory on Matthews Hill during the morning phase of the battle, Confederate reinforcements begin to arrive to the south on Henry House Hill at about noon, where they start to consolidate their thinly-stretched line under the command of newly-arrived Brigadier General Thomas J. Jackson with his First (Virginia) Brigade. With Union victory seemingly within reach, it is up to Jackson and his Virginians to hold the line long enough for Brigadier Generals Beauregard and Johnston to bring up reinforcements and possibly snatch victory from the jaws of defeat."

It was usual in the epoch. In the Crimean war townsfolk from Sevastopol went out and camped to where the russians were defending against the english and french (in the very first engagement). When the english won they discovered a bunch of empty pillows and coffee tables from where the wealthy russians were watching

The big takeaway I got from your presentation is that McDowell and the other Union generals wasted a HUGE amount of time both before and after taking Matthew's Hill. Had the Rhode Islanders been reinforced promptly, the Union forces might have pushed the Confederate forces back to Henry House Hill well before 11:00. Even after taking Matthew's Hill around 11:25, it seems that McDowell and Co. wasted over 2 hours to start fighting the Confederates at Henry House Hill. After all, one of Napoleon's sayings (someone these guys were all trying to emulate) was, "You can ask me for anything you like, except time."

Ricketts and Griffin had rifled guns which were effective at long distance but not good for close up fire. Jackson's guns were all smoothbores, much more effective at close distances as they can fire canister.

I've just come across this series & am really impressed with the unit colour coding to match the uniform colours. i had read about the confusion but this brought home how much more how it affected the battle. However, with such a detailed visual presentation of the battlefield, I was surprised that there were no graphics to show the hills. It looked like flat fields until the narrator described them. Otherwise this is the standard for presenting a battle in detail.

Its insane how the U.S. didn’t have a standing army at the time it put them at such a disadvantage.
Like when Britain joined in WW1 for example they had a small, but very professional and skilled standing army which gave them an advantage in the early war(however it would of course erode as WW1 turned into giant meat grinder).

limbers is not a word. To limber up is as action not a thing. Verb not noun. Caissons ow ever are a thing. The carry sot and powder. Each cannon has a caisson. Each cannon has two to eight horses to pull it and its caisson. The cannon is hitched to the cannon on back side and to the team of horses on the front side. In battle the horses are never un hitched form the caisson. The horses and caisson can be any where form 10 feet from the cannon to fifty feet all depending upon the battery commander needs at the time. Each horse in the battery has a handler. His job is to see to that horse anmd only that horse. If the horse if enjured in any way that it cant pull any more it is the handlers job to remove it form the team as fast as he can. A cannon can have as many as 15 men serving it. These are the gun commander, the sobber. the borer, the powder man. the round man and then the man who has the match the gunner (He lights the fuse). The other up to 9 men are the ammo carriers. They bring the power and the rounds from the Caisson to the gun.
The only cannon that had but 2 horses to draw it where Calvary gins. Little light 6lbers
These are the ones u see in the movies with horses doing more then a fast walk.
    So there u have it.
Only one thing left to say to "limber up" is to hook the cannon to the caisson. To unlimber is to do the opposite unhook it form the caisson.
