After weeks of maneuvers and minor skirmishing, the Northern Virginia Campaign is about to reach its climax on the familiar battleground of Manassas, where thirteen months earlier the Union Army had suffered a humiliating defeat in the first major battle of the Civil War. This time, however, Union Major General John Pope is determined to strike a crushing blow with his Federal Army of Virginia - reinforced by elements of McClellan's Army of the Potomac - to the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia led by General Robert E. @Geraint Thatcher: my brain processes slower than average. Lowering the video's playback speed to ~.90x works well for me to better comprehend all the packed action in real-time. If anyone else struggles to keep up as I do, it may help to lower the video's playback speed in their settings.
Wonderful like always. This battle once more IMO Lee and longstreet was way to passive. this could have crushed he entire Union army if they attacked in force the first day and held their positions and then gone full the next day. seems like longstreet is always soo passive and timid. Giving Lee bad advise!
I like the narration, and I'm usually picky about that. It's also improved since the first couple videos on this channel.
Thank you very much for this fantastic series. I live very near the Manassas Battlefield, and much of the area north and west of the Second Manassas battlefield (which I want to stress is privately owned) is being considered for rezoning for the so-called Pageland Lane Digital Gateway. The First Battle's hallowed ground gets most of the attention in the park and within the public consciousness, so videos like this which clearly delineate the movements during Second Manassas really help to frame the potential impact of such a construction. Well done.

One thing I like about this channel other than the great content is they are going in the timeline as it happens. Other history channels would be jumping all over.

It's actually pronounced Staunton, as if you were to say Stan-ton, instead of the way you pronounced it. The other word that you mis-pronounced, was Taliaferro. It's not pronounced Rollover. It's pronounced Tal-i-ferro...just to let you know.
Other than those two words that you mis-pronounced, as I said a little bit ago, you made an excellent presentation here! I'm giving you a score of 9.95 out of 10!!!

I'm so glad to see this one in the long form video. In my opinion this is when the Southern Army is at the height of its power. What I wouldn't have given to have been a fly on the wall when Lee, Longstreet and Jackson planned this one. Course, having Pope to kick all over Virginia is just a bonus. Headquarters in the saddle indeed. I look forward to seeing whatever campaign or battle the channel goes next. This is the only ACW animated channel of note on YT. Well done. Cheers from Tennessee

I would argue this video's biggest take away is that everyone comes into a battle with a grand strategic vision but will often have it crushed in the face of piss poor communication. Pope was basically screaming into darkness the whole battle and Stonewall is plagued by similar issues the first day.

Excellent video. I always wondered why Union forces always had their **ses handed to them in the first years of the war. Your series makes it clear that they were out-generaled. The ranks were equal in their fighting ability but the Union side's leadership was extremely incompetent.
Excellent! The only suggestion I would make (this is my no means a criticism at all - just my own request) would be to occasionally overlay the historic map on a modern map to orient locations.

This is an EXCELLENT representation of the Second Battle of Bull Run! Gen. Pope was embarrassed beyond belief...and, personally, I love it!
Bet he wished he'd kept his opinion to himself, concerning what he said about the Troops in the West. I'd say that Generals Lee. Longstreet, Jackson, Stuart, and everyone else in the Confederate Army, whether Officers or Soldiers, taught General Pope a lesson! Even someone that I wouldn't agree with, General McClellan, did what I believe to be the right thing, by electing to let General Pope fight his own Battle! That's one thing that I would agree with General McClellan on!
Little Mac had problems in committing his troops to battle. Who knows what would have happened had he used his troops at Second Manassas or later at Sharpsburg? Mac was not a good tactician , a poor commander. But his armies looked great and marched in straight lines.
@@judebrand3004The Yankees under General McClellan might've "Looked great, and marched in straight lines"...but, if you think about it, that didn't really help win any battles. Here's something else that just crossed my mind, even as I'm texting this: If you think about it, had General U. S. Grant been in charge of all of the Union Armies, both in the Western and Eastern Theaters of the Civil War, that War might've ended a lot sooner. Then again, maybe not...I don't know. However, as you and I both know, General U. S. Grant, while not perfect, was a much better Union Commander than Generals McClellan, Pope, Burnside, and Hooker, ever were. Those four incompetent Generals couldn't seem to win major engagements! General U. S. Grant, though, stepped up, and showed 'em how things were done! Even I, as someone who would have fought for the Confederacy, recognize and give the ultimate in respect, to a General, a True Man, that knew how to fight, win, and get the job done! I'm a fair man, and I give credit to whom credit is due, even if that person is an opponent!
This is absolutely the closest any rebel army would come to annihilating a union army and they still couldn't do it

Pope definitely got tunnel vision on Jackson. The delaying action by the Union on Chinn Ridge from Longstreet's attack on the third day is astounding. Also, the Union Calvary who made their stand and kept the flanking route closed is an amazing feat. I always envisioned it would be much more frightening to be a calvaryman...it seems so wildly up close and personal, it would take not just great skill, but unmatched bravery. I'd probably want to be in the infantry if I was in a war like this. Firing at an enemy in a line would be scary, but I would be happy at least I could aim better, rather than on a horse.
Shiloh 1st day was damned close, if not for the stand by the Hornet's Nest.
Neither Army had the "Knockout Power" to totally destroy each other.

I would say that now that second manassas is done it sets the stage and sets up the tension for the battle of chantily, The Maryland Campaign and the bloodiest day in American history September 17th 1862 the battle of Antietam and I am totally looking forward to seeing the battle of Antietam and the reason is because I am just really interested in the battle especially since during the battle my 3rd great grand uncle named George E Kitzmiller led the men of Company k first Pennsylvania reserves infantry regiment in this battle.

Only a week or so later would rebels actually pull a grant when Jackson captured harpers ferry and that was the best a rebel unit ever did against the union army

I never understood why the South tried to go toe to toe with a numerically superior army. In every engagement, they should developed a strategy of feigned withdraws, luring companies and regiments into pursuit, then surround and destroy or make surrender. Pitch battles are almost always stupid. There has to be a doctrine in order to sustain the army and use it's smaller size to advantage. Smaller means better communication and fast movement yet you rarely ever see the south exploit that advantage, always slugging it out. Over time, that led the North to simply bleed out the opposing army.
Conventions of the time. There is a lot that goes into that but essentially that is it. A major belief that is incorporated into that is that a grand victory would prove a sort of “righteousness” of one side or the other; which was why the campaign of Gettysburg was conducted and why Lee always retreated with an intact force rather than in the manner the Union managed to fall back post Fredericksburg or Chancellorsville.

That has always been true, tactics and strategy are outlined in 'The art of War'. Find the advantage, see the positives in every situation and don't be STUPID.
Raids into Northern territory would have been better than marching an entire army up there. I guess not every battle could go as well as Fredericksburg.

To that I have two words. Command and Control. YOU try coordinating elaborate maneuvers with often poorly-trained soldiers, without instantaneous communication and limited battlefield awareness.

Great video! Your videos are generally very well presented and informative. One small correction about day 1: The losses of the 21st Georgia would place it at least 3rd among confederate regiments in terms of suffered losses. The 1st Texas indeed lost the most at Antietam with 82-83% casualties but then there is also the 33rd Alabama which lost around 82% of its strength at Perryville. Just nitpicking tbh but I thought I'd mention it. And again thanks a lot for your great work!

What do the colors of the regiment blocks mean? Like some confederate units are grey, tan, brown, some union are green, outlined in red, etc.

Its battles like these that make me wonder how the hell we won this war?
The will, the great supplies, and a much bigger population in the North. Some of these battles seem like the Union should have done better, but the South initially had the benefit of defending rather than searching out the enemy and attacking. In current wars, to attack a defensive position requires 3 attacking soldiers to every 1 defender. To put that in perspective, if the confederates had 50,000 defenders, the union would need 150,000 to dislodge them hypothetically. But when the difference is negligble, or even equal, a lot of it comes down to luck. The Union didn't have a lot of luck on the offense in the 1861-1863 period. And the confederates lost at Antietam and Gettysburg when they were on the offensive as well in this period.
2nd Wisconsin had units called "Bad Axe Boys" (where they were from) or "Bad Ass Boys" - not raggedy ass.
and a Chantilly is where General Isaac Stevens will fall in battle leading his men of the 79th New York Highlanders in a charge against the Louisiana Tigers

Looking at images of civil war battlefields today, one thing that stands out is how many of the little rivers and streams no longer exist today and you can see the remnants of them still in the land. Anyone have a clue why that is? Is it just a seasonal thing, where the streams only exist part of the year or what?

General Erwin Rommel before he became a General after World War 1 was able to have an Rest n Recreation in the Shenandoah valley and he paid homage to the burial site of General Stonewall Jackson and have studied his tactics at the battles at the Valley almost always outnumbered by his enemies but not outwitted. He subsequently used this tactics on his future campaigns in North Africa defeating superior number of the British 8th Army and US third Army of General Patton! K

I feel Pope was the architect of his own demise here- that order was contradictory to put it lightly. Porter likely saved Pope from an even greater defeat. But I believe Mcdowell actually did a worse performance here then First Manassas. First Manassas the plan was good- but it was too intricate for green soldiers to execute. Just my assessments- open to converse though!

Yeah but at the same time I want Warhawk to be a separate channel. Also, as far as I have seen, good narrators cost loads of money for how long our videos our. We’ll barely break even if we hire somebody to voice the scripts instead.

It is so hard to command a battle, when you lack so much information, and commanders use flowery language to express orders so vague and open to interpretation, as they were given. The infighting among officers, who act like petulant children during a time of extreme danger is inexcusable. Lincoln had a 3 ring circus on his hands with these guys. because of all this, these battles became melee's, that took on a life of their own. it's sad so many men died and were maimed by incompetence. The South had their same issues, but in the Army of Northern Va. they at least had some competent commanders. Flawed, but able to get the upper hand on the yankees.
