  • This is part 1 of a 2 part series this year. As my use of Open Source grows, it gets harder to fit everything into a reasonable length video. I hope you enjoy it.
    I apologize, I tried to put everything in here from the show notes, but I don't get enough characters to do it, so I will simply ask you to click on the show notes below to find more information about any of the projects I talk about.

    I never have used windows at home, it was forced upon me at work. But I needed more power. I was multi-tasking windows programs on OS/2. I found that the windows programs ran far faster under OS/2. It worked so well that I installed at home. Then when Linux showed up, it took me a few months to fully adapt it at home. That was in 2004. I haven't regretted dropping windows, at all. I've been running Kubuntu since 16.04, but have used Red Hat, Suse, PCLinuxOS, Sabayone, and Linux Mint.

    I just got a mini PC in to start homelab, so the timing on this is good.
    I'm a Linux focused creator, any tips on content creation?
    As far as the video, two questions: first at a high level, what is the difference between remotely, mesh central and guacamole? I do remote stuff sometimes to help my parents.
    Second, what do you use to keep documentation about the various servers? I was considering wiki js or something like obsidian (though the latter is not open source).
    Looking forward to part 2!

    • @AwesomeOpenSource
      @AwesomeOpenSource  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      1st - Awesome that you are doing Linux content. As for content creation, I just say make the content that you would enjoy watching, the viewers will come. My viewers are Awesome! I will say, I've been toying with the idea for Open Ssource of a "Anything you can do, I can do (better)" series for Open Source vs. Closed Source software...but would love to see that for Linux vs. Windows and MacOS...just a thought.
      2nd, i have a video comparing MeshCentral, Remotely, RustDesk, and RPort (not got Guacamole in there yet, but will), so maybe it will help. I would compare Guacamole to Remmina more than the others really, but closer to an RMM than remote support. Here's that link th-cam.com/video/DZ0Ocwga43w/w-d-xo.html
      3rd. For my Show Notes - I'm usingBookstack. Love it's hierarchy, and the search is really good. Some people don't like the look of it, but I direct link from the video to the specific article. It has some great power features too, so that really makes it great for me. I'm slowly migrating from Ghost. Check out the bookstack channel for the features www.youtube.com/@BookStackApp
      I'm excited for Part 2 as well, and you have a new subscriber!

    • @ImAManMann
      @ImAManMann ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Remotely- advantage is graphics acceleration and webrtc communication.... it really lowers server load.
      Mesh central- advantage is community and broad os support.
      Guacamole- advantage is it supports lots of protocols and can act as a gateway and pretty easily can have management integrated into ldap and AD.... can be a pain to setup when new to it.... it is also probably most feature rich for what it does.

    This is a great video for us to explore more about open-source things. I have been trying to setup my Guacamole and its working pretty well with both password-based authentication and ssh private key based authentication with Ubuntu 20.04 on OCI vm. ssh private key based authentication on Ubuntu 22.04 on a AWS ec2 instance not working. guacd logs shows "Public key authentication failed: Username/PublicKey combination invalid." Any thoughts?

  • @alanjrobertson
    @alanjrobertson ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I use lots of these already and totally agree - love Portainer, NPM (although has been unreliable recently for renewing SSL certs), MeshCentral, ProxMox, Uptime Kuma, Home Assistant 👍
    Out of interest what benefits did you find for Remotely over MeshCentral? MC also has a run-one app for support requests that doesn't require full installation so I just use that instead.

    • @AwesomeOpenSource
      @AwesomeOpenSource  ปีที่แล้ว

      I like the waay remotely gives the end user the option to stop my control, but still allow me to see what they are trying to do, and vice-versa. There's some great features in both, but I use MeshCentral as a RMM more than a remote support tool. use what works best for you though.

    I would suggest connecting business apps to show KPI's so that small businesses can see their numbers and grow: for example ErpNext + Activepieces (zapier O.S. self hosted alternative) + Grafana.. so that numbers can be exported on sales floor, etc etc. Similar to Bradon Dawson at cardone ventures on youtube is talking about; growing, scaling small business, optimising according to KPI's aspect ratio etc. From under 1 million to 20 millions and more. Without proper tools (coneccted synced tech stack) and know-how and mindset is hardly possible. And Tech-stack and data is big part of it. Thnx for you effort.

      Cool Idea. Maybe I could use something like n8n to pass the data around, and collect it in something like Basero, then display metrics in Metabase.

    • @zoranaw7964
      @zoranaw7964 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@AwesomeOpenSource It's worth trying since you know n8n. I have just finished installing open source Activepieces for the same purpose (with the help of support at their dischord support stuff - because docker inside proxmox ubuntu 22.04 lxc not yet - so smooth install; unlike regular docker). And will try to figure out how to do stuff and how to connect everything. Based on scenarios what would small business owner wanna have as "real time kpi" .

I'd add Caprover (basically self-hosted SaaS like heroku), Pterodactyl (game servers through docker), Xbackbone (basic file upload, easy file sharing), Shlink (link shortener) and Gitea or now Forgejo (self-hosted git server). Also, I use Zerotier to access my servers, things like SSH are only accessible from the VPN.

      Depending on what you are trying to do, I would suggest getting a dell t320 and upgrade to a 10 core cpu and as the cost makes sense... max out the ram. Make sure to get the enterprise idrac license. With that you can use proxmox or truenas core and run basically anything you want.

    Super interesting. You're using everything I'm avoiding :P I don't like the web and I don't like containers. I dumped truenas for a bare freebsd machine and I dumped the pi-hole because it's growing useless with all the offending devices moving to DOH. And I prefer light switches without firmware (aka no home automation). But it's nice to see what other people do.
    However, I love that you host your own mail server. More people need to do it!

    Thank you for this awesome summary. Quick question: When you set up NPM, from a security standpoint, do you have NPM and servers on the same network/vlan? I have been having npm separate on a DMZ network. I wonder what you think?

    • @AwesomeOpenSource
      @AwesomeOpenSource  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think as long as you know how to setup the proper routing, then do whatever makes you feel most comfortable. I run my npm on a proxy server (dedicated for proxying traffic) then have my other services running on various VMs. These are all on an VLAN that is separate from my main network.

      Indeed, several have asked. I see MeshCentral as an RMM (Remote Machine Management system. Guacomole is really more RDP from the browser with a little more control. But getting access through Guacamole across the internet (IMO) is more complicated, while with MeshCentral the agent does all of the heavy lifting.
